...Hallyu began roughly 12 years ago when the rest of Asia discovered Korean soap operas. One of the breakthrough dramas was a series 'Winter Sonata' starring Choi Ji-woo & Bae Young-Joon. After that, more Korean dramas saw their way to foreign shores and Korean films and music started to follow suit. Korean marketing people started to see a Korea-centric trend. They dubbed this flow "The Korean Wave" or Hallyu....

[Queen Seon-deok] Scriptwriter Kim Young-hyun's 3+1 things to watch out for.
[Queen Seon-deok] Scriptwriter Kim Young-hyeon's 3+1 things to watch out for.
Cr. MBC America
Having penned [Seo-dong-yo] and [Jewel in the Palace], some of the greatest historical period pieces, scriptwriter Kim Young-hyeon is critically acclaimed in her field. She pinpoints three things to watch out for in her upcoming work [Queen Seon-deok]. These points of interest will help to enhance the viewing experience.
First, the overpowering charms of Mi-shil, the temptress who has an inherently devilish character.
For the greater part of the first half of the drama, Go Hyeon-jeong's chracter Mi-shil will dominate with her great charisma. Writer Kim explains, "Mi-shil will gather prominence as her strong and evil aura increases in the first half. But in the second half, Seon-deok will rise up and overcome her, therein creating an intense storyline that will excite the viewers both visually and emotionally." Mi-shil is a character who serves and survives three consecutive kings, wiling them with her temptress charms. Yet, because she is of the weaker sex, as then believed, she must instinctively fight a bitter political battle in order to survive in the palace. As a result, her actions come off as cruel, ruthless and belligerent, and they will ignite both fear and indignance within the viewers.
Since Mi-shil is characterized by the talented and captivating actress Go Hyeon-jeong, expectations are understandably high. The more evil deeds Mi-shil commits, the more overwhelming it will be when she meets her demise in the second half. Therefore Kim intends to write Mi-shil with as many facets as she can.
Second, the focus on Hwa-rang, "Silla's storehouse of national strength."
Even the illustrious and elite West Point wouldn't compare with Hwa-rang. "The organization known as Hwa-rang was an elite training center that was essentially all-purpose as well. It was the leading training grounds for future military leaders, a place of religious affairs and also taught its members to play instruments or paint." Kim also added, "This drama will paint a refreshing picture of Hwa-rang for the viewers."
At times of a political or military crisis, members of Hwa-rang would gather their opinions and present it to the authorities, and the king and his council deemed their opinion as weighty and influential. [Queen Seon-deok] will bring to life as never before seen on the small screen the Hwa-rang festival "Nang-cheon-jae" (the ceremony that celebrates the establishment of Hwa-rang as an important axis of power) as well as the Hwa-rang tradition of "Nang-jang-gyeol-ui," the act of heavily making up their faces in order to symbolize their determination that overcomes even death.
The [Queen Seon-deok] staff has even created a grand set for the main Hwa-rang training hall.
Lastly, the tagline "The one who secures the people will acquire the world and rule the ages" is the epitomized theme of the drama.
The main current in the plot stream is the political war for the throne between Queen Seon-deok's camp and Mi-shil's camp.
Both camps will fight to gain supporters in order to take over the throne. The success or failure in the process of building up trust with other people and gaining support will relate largely to the viewers of today. Kim says, "In the end, Queen Seon-deok's side just has a stronger network of trust than Mi-shil's camp. [...] This drama will develop how those networks are formed and reinforced."
+1, the incredible partnership between two great directors, Park Hong-gyun of the hit medical drama [New Heart] and Kim Geun-hong, a leader in the historical period productions with previous works like [Yi -san] [Ju-mong] and [Jewel in the Palace].
[Queen Seon-deok] is helmed by directors Park Hong-gyun of the 2008 hit medical drama [New Heart] and Kim Geun-hong, who worked alongside director Lee Byeong-hun on [Jewel in the Palace] [Ju-mong] and [Yi-san].
Two of MBC's greatest directors will create a wonderful ensemble, leading [Queen Seon-deok] towards a common goal but with two distinct yet harmonious viewpoints. This combination will undoubtedly captivate the viewers.
Additionally, sprinkle in the dream team of high-quality actors: Lee Sun-jae, Shin-gu, Lee Yo-won, Go Hyeon-jeong, Eom Tae-woong, Park Ye-jin, Jo Min-ki, Jeon No-min, Jeong Woong-in, Dok-go Young-jae, Song Ok-suk, Kim Nam-gil, Yu Seung-ho and so forth. The quality of acting is practically guaranteed, upping the ante as well as expectations.
