Today’s Asian Consciousness about "Korean Wave"

Asian publics clearly have become more open to this cultural collaboration, generally accepting of cultural products from other Asian countries, and desirous of more people-to-people contacts within the region. Despite its relatively small size, Korea has pro-duced such a wealth of television dramas, music pop stars, and video games that other Asians refer to a “Korean Wave” of cultural exports, most of which feature melodramatic plots and what one writer calls “wholesome Confucian family values.”18Korea’s pop exports have proven so popular that over one million tourists visit the country every year to see attractions related to its television shows. When new Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made his inaugural visit to South Korea, the local media fawned over his wife, Akie Abe, known for her love of Korean soap operas. According to one report, when a prominent Korean star, Bae Yong-joon, visited Tokyo, Akie asked her husband to book a room in the hotel where he was staying, so she might catch a glimpse of Mr.Bae Yong Joon
