[News] Song Seung-hun, Nam Sang-mi up for SBS drama?

Rumors are swirling about Song Seung-hun (My Princess) being cast as the lead in the upcoming drama Forget Me Not, as well as actress Nam Sang-mi (Life Is Beautiful), although neither is a lock yet. However, it’s been teased that the drama will feature a main couple at the “top star level,” and both would fit that designation, though perhaps Song more than Nam.

It’s interesting news (at least, to me) because (1) it’s Song Seung-hun, Mr. Big-Time Leading Man (also Hand Towel extraordinaire), and (2) the drama is by Kim Soo-hyun — the respected writer, not the Dream High/Giant budding star, and (3) the two above mentioned things seem at odds with each other.

Song’s management team has put out the official statement that no decisions have been made, which is common even when the star eventually takes on the project, so all that means is that it’s not final. A rep did confirm that he’d gotten the offer and is currently in talks about the role, but said that things had not gone beyond that point.

On the other side is writer Kim, who’s known for being a hit maker and has penned some huge dramas like Mom’s Dead Upset as well as the recent Life Is Beautiful; you may recall the incident where she spoke out strongly against the show’s decision to edit out out gay vows that she’d written into the script, which warms my heart. Kim has done a lot of longer weekend dramas, but at 24 episodes Forget Me Not will be her first miniseries in four years, since 2007′s My Man’s Woman. Also noteworthy is that this will also be helmed by the same PD who worked with her on the successful dramas mentioned above, and perhaps together they’ll be able to score another 40% hit.

If the casting goes through, it’ll be interesting to see if Song can keep up; he ain’t exactly known for his dramatic chops, by reputation and by his own admission. However, he did pleasantly surprise me in My Princess — granted, he coasted a bit on Kim Tae-hee’s charm and his role of the perfect-man chaebol wasn’t terribly challenging, but he was light and funny and very, very hot. And Nam Sang-mi always makes me smile, with her sunny disposition and upbeat energy. Plus, together they are just gorgeous.

Forget Me Not is being planned for Mondays and Tuesdays on SBS, following Warrior Baek Dong-soo, which puts its premiere in September.
