Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung two actresses were said to be on bad terms after it was rumoured that Ziyi was reduced to being the second female lead.

The lensing ceremony of Dangerous Liaisons, starring actors Zhang Ziyi, Cecilia Cheung and Jang Dong Gun, was held in Beijing yesterday.

During the press conference, Ziyi and Cecilia were friendly and smiled on stage. However, things soured when the media posed questions about Ziyi being the second female lead and reported on-set rivalry.

Dangerous Liaisons is a Chinese adaption of the French classic of the same name. Set in Shanghai, the film tells the story of a pair of wartime former lovers, played by Cecilia and Dong Gun. Later, Dong Gun's character meets a woman, portrayed by Ziyi and falls in love with her. Cecilia's character then schemes to ruin their life.

From the characters' profiles, it was obvious that Cecilia was the leading lady of the film.

Furthermore, it was said that Ziyi became very unhappy, after Cecilia's manager revealed that Cecilia had accepted her role at an asking price of RMB16 million (S$3.2 million).

To calm the Chinese actress down, the production company announced -- via a press release -- that Ziyi was offered RMB20 million (S$4 million).

At the press conference, Ziyi was asked why she had accepted the role, despite knowing that she was not the leading lady. The atmosphere turned awkward instantly. Cecilia quickly stepped forward to cool the situation down.

"There's no such thing as a first or second female lead. We're here because of our passion for acting," she said.

After the press conference, Ziyi and Dong Gun stayed back for interviews.

When yet another reporter probed Ziyi on who the female lead of the film was, she blurted angrily, "Actually I ... Don't you understand what was said [at the press conference] just now?"

"I'm only focusing on the production now, the rest is not important. I hope it will be a beautiful and touching film," the actress added.

Ziyi also revealed that she was the one who recommended Cecilia to the director and said frankly, "Movies don't depend on the work of one person."
