Fresh off his Best Film win at the 5th Asian Film Awards, Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (อภิชาติพงศ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล) is set to produce Concrete Clouds, the feature debut of Lee Chatametikool (ลี ชาตะเมธีกุล), editor of Weerasethakul's Palme d'Or winner, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ).
The USD$530,000 film is a joint Thai-Hong Kong co-production with Weerasethakul 's own Kick The Machine outfit, Thailand's Electric Eels and Lee Chatametikool's Vertigo Films. The official synopsis describes Concrete Clouds as a four character drama set amidst the suicide of a loved one during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.
"It's my new adventure that I want to start producing," said Weerasethakul. "I love having freedom, my producer gives me a lot of freedom, and so I want to support new generation of filmmakers by giving them this freedom to create a new style of filmmaking."
"The title is an allusion to the empty office buildings I saw on my return to Thailand after the 1997 crisis," said Chatametikool.
Principal photography is scheduled for September this year, with a target release towards mid-2012. Confirmed cast includes Thai-Laos superstar Ananda Everingham (The Leap Years).
Concrete Clouds was presented at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum last year as Past Love before Weerasethakul was attached to the project.
