Bae Yong Jun was unexpectedly caught by reporters, who had been waiting for other stars, as he left the country through Incheon International Airport on April 9, and a Keyeast official was brought to clarify that he was traveling overseas on personal affairs.

The official said, "He is leaving the country due to a personal schedule that had been set for some time, but we were surprised when some reports said he was leaving secretly for some business-related issue.

We believe they guessed so because his dining business in Hawaii previously made issues."

Bae Yong Jun appeared at the airport in a dandy all-black style.

"I′ll make a return this year if there′s a good piece, so please wait for it," he said.

[News] Lee Jun Ki Shares Honest Feelings About His Rivalry With Jang Keun Suk.

[News] Lee Jun Ki Shares Honest Feelings About His Rivalry With Jang Keun Suk.
Cr. - soompi

Actor Lee Jun Ki (30) returned to the small screen in MBC’s “Arirang and the Magistrate.” Although the drama was neither a serious melodrama nor a sad romance, the actor became completely absorbed in his role and showed a variety of abilities as Kim Eun Oh, a man that can see ghosts.

After wrapping up the successful drama the Hallyu actor met up with reporters to talk about the drama, the Hallyu wave, and his life.

Lee Jun Ki is not only famous for is acting, but also for his fan meetings. He has held an unprecedented three hour long fan concert, something quite unusual for a top actor. In his concert, Lee Jun Ki sang ballads and even performed dance numbers for his fans. His fan meetings have been called the best of fan meetings and received positive reviews for his showcase and for the way he communicates with his fans.

Although originally his methods received some criticism from his acting seniors, these days other Hallyu stars are taking notes. During his reign as top Hallyu star, Bae Yong Joon had his own distinctive style of giving to his fans but now the new generation of Hallyu stars, such as Lee Jun Ki and Jang Keun Suk, has their own ways.

While Lee Jun Ki was serving in the military he was not able to meet with his fans, and during that time his juniors, Jang Keun Suk, Lee Min Ho, and others were rising up as Hallyu stars.

“People ask me if I ever think that Jang Keun suk has taken my spot whenever I see him. People have even asked me if I feel sick whenever I see a picture of him. I’m doing quite well. It doesn’t take just one person to spread the Hallyu wave,” the actor said.

It seems like Lee Jun Ki has a definite idea of what it means to be a Hallyu star. He’s well aware of the differences between him and Jang Keun Suk. While both are good looking, they convey different charms to their fans. Jang Keun Suk is smooth yet unpredictable. He showcases himself each day as if thinking, “What would make the fans happy today?” The media calls his attractions, “self producing charms” for his deliberateness.

With that said, what draws fans to Lee Jun Ki? As an actor being skilled in that talent is important, but he is also a star so he must also have personal charms. He is known to work sincerely and dedicatedly. In addition to his sincerity, he exudes kindness and warmth. This is why fans love Lee Jun Ki.

Also his acting has improved step by step.

“I can’t act as well as my seniors. I still have a lot to work on, but I do know some things about acting,” the actor said modestly about himself.

During his time in the military heard that he should be worried about the handsome and talented actors in their twenties who were gaining popularity.

The actor said, “While I consider Song Joong Ki, Kim Soo Hyun, Yoo Ah In, Lee Min Ho, and Jang Keun Suk my hot friends in their twenties, I think that if I don’t act properly I will probably be compared to them.”

He added, “However, the increase in talent gives me strength and stimulates me. Although they might take some of my popularity, I think I need to learn from them even if they are my juniors.”

Lee Jun Ki takes self improvement seriously. He carefully reads even the negative comments about himself. He does this because he thinks it is the best way to improve himself.

It seems during that time in the military Lee Jun Ki also learned to be more flexible. Before he had only tried to show a fierce and strong image to the public, perhaps to make up for his feminine looks. Nowadays he has let himself loose and show a more comfortable and perhaps even more fitting image to the public.

Lee Jun Ki rose to fame with his movie “The King and the Clown.” For his next drama, “Time Between Dog and Wolf” he proved that he was more than just a pretty face.

In “Iljimae” he played a serious yet pleasant multifaceted character and developed himself as a serious actor.

Although the viewership rating for his next drama “Hero” was low, he had now become a top respectable Korean actor.

Now, “Arirang and the Magistrate” welcomed him back as actor and we can expect to see more of his talents and abilities in the future.

[Article] 'Hallyu' Korean teaching tool : Super Junior, ‘Winter Sonata’ as new primers.

[Article] 'Hallyu' Korean teaching tool : Super Junior, ‘Winter Sonata’ as new primers.
Author By Jane Han
Cr. - http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/

NEW YORK ― For learners of Korean in the U.S., it’s goodbye to rote memorization and dull drills; hello to Super Junior and Bae Yong-joon. A new curriculum is set to revamp the traditional teaching method of Korean, a much-needed update aimed at giving the language a more fun and practical appeal.

``It’s always been about grammar and vocabulary, just like the way Korean students approach English,’’ said Lee Hyo-sang, associate professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University.

``You can pile on all the grammar and vocabulary you want, but it’s worthless if you can’t speak the language,’’ he said. ``What you know about the language isn’t important. What you can do with the language is.’’

To help Korean learners do more, Lee and members of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK), a national group of Korean language educators in the U.S., are working on a new curriculum that moves away from textbooks and engages cultural elements instead.

``Many instructors have found existing textbooks to be very limited. Those are bound to be more and more outdated, and lack in authenticity and topical appeal for college students,’’ says Kim Hae-young, associate professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University and President of AATK.

Currently, approximately 70 middle and high schools, and 93 colleges and universities in the U.S. offer Korean classes.

Experts say there has been a sharp rise in the number of students who take Korean classes on US campuses largely driven by ``hallyu,’’ or the Korean wave.

So then what better way to teach Korean than with Korean drama and music?

``K-pop and K-drama are primarily what drew these students to the language, so it will be a more enjoyable and effective learning process to integrate the elements they like,’’ says Lee.

For example, lyrics could be used to illustrate grammatical patterns and functions. In Super Junior’s ``Beautiful Woman,’’ the lyrics show a repetition of phrases, such as ``bolkka malkka’’ (should I look or not) and ``bonchae manchae’’ (as if I saw it or not), which can make a complex structure easier to understand.

At AATK’s recent annual conference at Stanford University, Susan Strauss of Pennsylvania State University introduced comparison clips from the popular drama ``Winter Sonata’’ and American hit series ``Dawson’s Creek,’’ a lesson to guide students to explore similarities and differences of melodramatic depiction of romantic love and jealousy in each.

``We’re not looking for replacement of old textbooks with newer `textbooks,’’’ says Kim. ``Printed books are not suitable forms for updating, revising and flexible adaptations, so different ways of making developed materials need to be tried.’’

The new curriculum is expected to take at least two to three years for completion. Once completed, it will become a national standard as outlined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, a national advocacy group for language teachers.

[Article] 'Yonsama'(37): Korean love god captures Japanese hearts.

[Article] 'Yonsama'(37): Korean love god captures Japanese hearts.
Cr. - http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/
By Andrew Salmon

Actor Bae Yong-joon leads ‘hallyu’ (Korea wave).

Some years ago, this writer climbed into a taxi in Seoul. As is commonly the case, the driver asked where I was from. On hearing “the United Kingdom,” he responded, “Aha! Beckham!” Then, in excellent Konglish, he continued, “U.K. — David Beckham! Korea — Bae Yong-joon!”

For a moment, I was nonplussed. I was about to respond, “No my good man, Bae is a thespian, not a footballer” when the penny dropped. Bae was to Korea what Beckham was to the United Kingdom: an international sex symbol.

While the United Kingdom has had its share of male superstars dating back to the days of John, Paul, George and Ringo and the “British Invasion,” this was a novel experience for Korea, a nation that had previously been known more for exports of supertankers than dreamboats. Moreover, Bae’s fame had ignited in — of all places — Japan, the nation that had, for most of the 20th century, had a problematic relationship with Korea.

The vehicle that conveyed Bae to super-stardom was inauspicious. “Winter Sonata” in 2002 was a do-it-by-the-numbers Korean soap opera; a “no-sex-please, this-is-pure-love” romance that plays out to the tune of syrupy ballads and features only drop-dead gorgeous actors and dreamy locations, as well as that classic (and much-used) device of the Korean melodrama, a character who loses his memory.

In short, this was no downbeat, day-to-day soap of ordinary people a la “East Enders” or “Coronation Street.” This was romantic fantasy. The series was a hit in Korea and across the region, but its real explosion of popularity — an authentic phenomenon — would come across the East Sea.

This was remarkable as relations between the two neighbors in the 1990s had been particularly prickly, with historical and territorial disputes rising again and again and again. There had been amity and cooperation — but also suspicion and competition — during the jointly hosted 2002 World Cup.

Arguably, “Winter Sonata” would do more to inch the nations closer together than the world’s most popular sporting event.

Korea conquers Japan

The show’s main fans were love-lorn Japanese housewives of a certain age. So keen on “Winter Sonata” was this sizeable population segment that the series repeated twice in the same year on NHK. Social critics, taken by surprise by its runaway success, speculated that while Japanese TV had become more sophisticated in its productions, this Korean import was a throwback to a simpler, kinder and gentler era.

A “Winter Sonata” boom resounded across Korea. Eager Japanese housewives flooded the nation on tours to visit the filming locations and, of course, drop yen in the boutiques and department stores that queued up for “Winter Sonata” stars to endorse their outlets and brands. Japanese tourist numbers surged; extra flights were reportedly scheduled to keep up with the demand.

But while Korean travel agents — not to mention canny marketers, merchants and merchandisers — raked it in, it was Bae who was the big beneficiary. In the series, he had played the lead male role, the Prince Charming. Beholding his smooth skin, gentle smile, bespectacled eyes and (not least) his carefully knotted muffler, Japanese matrons swooned en masse.

Bae’s fame rocketed. He appeared as a host on Japanese TV; he was approached to endorse products, open restaurants, pen books. At summits, he was cited and mentioned by Japanese prime ministers and Korean presidents alike. When he landed at a Japanese airport to promote another TV project, the scramble to see him was so desperate that a number of fans were injured in the crush. According to reports, Bae sportingly paid their medical costs.

Koreans had been leaned on to take Japanese names near the close of the 1910-1945 colonial era, but when Bae was re-christened “Yonsama” (“Prince Yong” after the actor’s first name) by Japanese fans, nobody minded. This was not coercion, this was an honor.

For the first time, a Korean was a sex symbol in Japan. There had been nothing remotely like it since “Rikidozan” the star of 1950s Japanese pro-wrestling. But Riki was not nearly so wholesome a figure as Bae. He was a tough guy rather than a sex symbol, and anyway, he had promoted himself as Japanese, keeping his Korean ethnic identity close to his chest. Bae had no reason to do this; he was unabashedly Korean.

Wave rolls on; Bae left behind?

The term Korean wave (“hallyu”) had been coined in China in 1999, and is generally believed to date back to the slick action blockbuster “Shiri” which came out that year. “Winter Sonata” was the first monster-hit soap opera. It would be followed by other Korean melodramas; the next biggie, which took the region by storm, would be 2003’s “Daejanggeum” (“The Jewel in the Palace”), a costume drama about a Joseon-era royal chef. From then on — and in sync with a corresponding crescendo of Korean popular music — the Korean wave surged ever onward and ever outward.

Bae spent increasing time on lucrative product endorsements, but continued to work in dramatic roles. His first major post-“Sonata” role was a departure: He appeared in (and out of) Joseon-era costume in a racy 2003 Korean remake of “Dangerous Liaisons” entitled “Untold Scandal.” The film, which was R-rated in Japan for its steamy bedroom scenes, scandalized a number of his fans, who had preferred the romantic gentleman of the soap opera to the conniving, shag-happy cad of the film.

He later appeared in the more conventional TV historical epic “King Gwanggaeto” in 2007. But no succeeding projects won the headline success of “Winter Sonata” abroad, and Bae may have been irreversibly typecast. Perhaps due to the reception to “Untold Scandal,” his 2005 movie “April Love” had been a tender “Sonata”-style love story.

While Bae’s English language website boasts of his versatility — “he always comes to us in different ways” — it prominently features love ballads and the main photos are a selection of the kind of smiling, cutesy image fans so loved from his most famous drama. According to news reports, although he can command $5 million per picture, other Korean actors can now demand double that.

His image has also been called into question. His smiling public persona was as Mr. Nice Guy, but local entertainment reporters alleged that he had a mercurial temper and was not above dishing out physical violence when displeased with managerial decisions. (His site lists his hobbies as weightlifting, hapkido and kendo.)

And he suffered from stress. Bae admitted to reporters that he was suffering a crisis stemming from his popularity. Unable to go out in public, his life was a constant shuttle between home, the office and (of course) the gym.

Yet rumors of violence did not impact his image and fears online and in popular media that he might commit suicide — the fate of one of his “Winter Sonata” co-stars in 2010 — proved happily unfounded.

Yonsama: icon

Today, the Korean wave has spread far and wide. Posters of Korean actors, actresses and musicians are plastered over the bedroom walls of teens and 20-something funksters and hipsters across Asia and beyond. It is soaps — along with K-pop — that make up the bulk of the wave; movie exports (which tend to be edgier and less formulaic then dramas and music) are a distant third. “Winter Sonata” was the first Korean super soap, Bae its superstar.

Like Beckham — who could never be described as one of the world’s greatest football players, but who has won fame as a global male fashion icon — Bae may never be recalled as one of Korea’s finest dramatic talents. However, his chiseled bod, smooth-faced good looks and dazzling smile cannot be denied. These are the assets that ensure his place in the history of pan-Asian popular culture: Yonsama was Korea’s first international sex god.

Andrew Salmon is a reporter and the author of three works on modern Korean history — “U.S. Business and the Korean Miracle: U.S. Enterprises in Korea, 1866 — the Present,” “To the Last Round: The Epic British Stand on the Imjin River, Korea, 1951,” and “Scorched Earth, Black Snow: Britain and Australia in the Korean War, 1950.”

Jeon Do-yeon who is also known as 'the queen of Cannes" is well known for her quality movies, Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon who is known for his discerning eyes when it comes to choosing his work and Im Soo-jung who has her fans craving for more of her on screens are into reading drama synopsis's these days.

We can tell there has been a change of pattern amongst the main actors and actresses since last year. Those who have been in more movies acted as tow trucks on home screens. Han Suk-Kyu from "Deep-rooted Tree" was one and Sin Ha-gyun from "Brain" was another. Actor Jang Dong-gun is also looking forward to a drama come back for the first time in twelve years.

Jeon Do-yeon's spokesperson told OSEN, "She is considering dramas rather than movies at the moment. She is looking through movies as well but she craves for drama more. She has gotten many offers but she hasn't found one she really likes yet".

"Maybe it's because of her nick name, 'the queen of Cannes', there is a preconception that Jeon Do-yeon only does movies. This isn't true. If there is a drama she wants to do then she will be glad to star in it. Her plan is to return with a drama within the year". Gong Yoo from the movie "The Crucible" is also planning on coming back with a drama.

“If he asks again, just quietly slip him my number,” Lee Young Ja said slyly.

On 18th December, actor Bae Yong-joon’s agency Key East Entertainment confirmed the details that the star has indeed recently moved into a house in Seongbuk-dong in Seongbuk District in northern Seoul.

According to local media, Bae bought the house in November last year for five billion won ($4.3 million). The new home of the movie star is a white-colored two-story building that looks clean and luxurious from the outside.

The star made changes to the interior of the house and moved in following the renovation. The actor’s agency stated that he threw a house-warming party before moving in.

Up until the star moved into his new home, Bae lived in a rental house in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, for the last four years. Due to his sudden purchase of the large house, there were rumors circulating that the celebrity would soon wed.

However Key East Entertainment denied these rumors saying, “As rental prices kept rising, Bae thought it was a smart move to buy his own home. The star was missing the smell of dirt and wanted a house with a garden.”

[Interview] Drunk with Jang Keun-suk (3)+(4): CF fee more than Bae Yong-joon.

[Interview] Drunk with Jang Keun-suk (3)+(4): CF fee more than Bae Yong-joon.
Cr. - Aphrael77

This day, Jang Keun Suk undergoes the test at Hanyang, introducing theatre at a big theatre and movie department. Every week on Monday and Tuesday, JKS will go to school. It’s the only free time that he can enjoy. In year two, being a committee member of the school anniversary’s Arts Festival, his patriotic feelings towards his school were visible. Now he is in his last semester.

Q: The reason why JKS always goes to school?
JKS: Registration fee is very expensive, and also I can enjoy uninterrupted free time!

Q: As a student, how is JKS like?
JKS: I come and go alone. Of course, I don’t put on make-up and my hair is tousled. Because I am not an artiste in school.

Q. Did anyone try to get your autograph?
JKS: This kind of strange thing doesn’t really happen in school. And things such as secretly taken photos are also rare.

Q: Did you try attending group dates?
JKS: Yes, did that once in year one, 8 to 8 at cafe M along University Road. The girls were from Aviation course, so I thought to see who could recognize me. Ha … I’m kidding.

Q: Do you go to the library?
JKS: Frankly speaking, I have not gone there before… once or twice I thought of going there to take a look (laughs)

Q: Why are you passionate about attending school?
JKS: I treasure the (expensive) registration fees for every semester .. so I want to come to school no matter what … in addition, my time at school is not disrupted by anyone … so I treasure this kind of time very much …

Q: You have saved a lot of money?
JKS: [it does not seem to be a very important thing] but yes, for my age, yes I have earned and saved a lot of money …

Q: How do you manage your finances?
JKS: My parents manage it, so in fact I don’t know anything. I still spend from pocket money. When it’s not enough, then I request for money from my parents. (laughs)

Because of “You are Beautiful” in Japan last year, JKS rose rapidly to become the most popular Hallyu star after Winter Sonata’s Bae Yong-joon in 2004. After singing, performing and releasing an album, he has become a top star ……

Q: How do you look at comments about being the next-generation Hallyu star after Bae Yong-joon?
JKS: I’m very honoured …. but Senior Bae Yong-joon anda I are different.. so there is no basis for comparison. Senior BYJ caused the world to have a different understanding of Koreans… in comparison, I am only a newly grown chicken.

Q: Your commercial asking fee exceeds BYJ’s?
JKS: Using CF asking fee as a basis for evaluating is also not logical. The history that Senior BYJ made…. just this point alone is very fantastic …

Q: Have you thought about why you are so popular in Japan?
JKS: This …. I didn’t think about this before. Seems like (fans) like my unpredictable actions… (laughs)

Q: What is inside JKS’ bag?

1. One can of beverage
2. Tea-coloured wallet
3. “You’re my Pet” CD
4. Wet tissue
5. Fragrance
6. Ointment
7. Blackberry
8. USB earphones
9. Home-used medicine

During the 3-hour interview, JKS showed his free-spirited personality throughout… his frankness is surprising, like an unrestrained wild horse; his confidence and mindset to take on challenges… this and his unique charm that is noticeably different from other stars.

Recently every day, he leads his usual life surrounded by cameras. KBS and Japan’s Fuji TV are, at the same time, producing a daily documentary of his life. KBS will air a New Year special feature on 4 Jan 2012, tentatively entitled “25 years old, I am Jang Keun Suk”.

Lastly, we requested JKS to reveal something he has not revealed before. He revealed his student identity card, that pic of a rough-edged university freshman with glaring eyes.
