9 Richter scale earthquake that shook Japan has resulted in more than 18 thousand people became victims. While data showed 9,199 people confirmed dead, while another 13,786 officially listed as missing.

Loss of relatives, friends were perceived or Japanese mafia group known as the 'Yakuza'. Sometimes the worst conditions make people do good things.

Not long after the tsunami waves hit, two large groups of Yakuza moves to make their offices as a base for distribution of food, water and blankets. The goods are directly delivered via two large trucks to the affected areas.

A day after the earthquake, the Inagawa-kai, the third largest Yakuza group in Japan sent twenty-five trucks with a capacity each carrying four tons of paper diapers, ramen (a type of noodle) instant, batteries, fluorescent lamps, beverage and other daily needs to the Tohoku region.

Executive Sumiyoshi-kai, the second largest Yakuza group even offered refuge to foreigners. While the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest Yakuza group in the cherry country also opened offices throughout the country and deliver the needs of the victims secretly.

Inagawa-kai was the most active group because it has strong roots in the disaster area. Inagawa-kai in Tokyo in order to block the roads to send 50 tons of supplies to Hitachinaka City Hall, Ibaki prefecture, at midnight on 12 March until the morning of 13 March 2011. Shipping is without mentioning the sender because of fear of rejection from the victim.

Inagawa Kai sent 70 trucks to Ibaraki and Fukushima who have high-level nuclear radiation. Overall, the group has been moving goods by 100 tonnes to Tohoku. They send help without any protection.

Yamaguchi-gumi members said it does not want listed as the sender in order to avoid rejection of the victim. "Currently there is no one wants to be associated with us, and we do not like it if our assistance is rejected," said a member of the Yakuza as quoted from the page the Daily Beast. One other member also said, "Currently, there is no yakuza or katagi (ordinary citizens) or a gaijin (foreigner) in Japan now. We are the Japanese all. We all need to help each other."

For those who are not familiar with the Yakuza, might be startled at first. But philanthropy has been started since 1995 when the Kobe earthquake occurred. Yamaguchi-gumi is the most swift disaster response deliver aid to victims at the time. The aid should also be paid with the funds they collect from people around the quake.

Confusing indeed. Who would have thought that the daily Yakuza doing illegal practices such as collecting money security, extortion, and violence, can perform humanitarian activities like this. Even so, since the post-war Japan, the Yakuza was instrumental in creating security in the country of Japan.

But keep in mind Yakuza is a criminal organization, and they have their own way to reduce crime rates. Japanese population is still admired and tolerated the Yakuza action.

What about the Japanese police response to the action of these reinforcements? There is an unwritten agreement between the Police and the Yakuza. Police can now receive their actions are as long as they do not make this for publicity alone.

Currently there are more than 80 thousand members of Yakuza. Japan police used to call it with shiteiboryokudan which means the group that uses violence.
