[News & Interview] The Changes Experienced by Shin Hyun Joon.

Shin Hyun Joon (43). He has changed. The titles such as Professor, MC, Actor, only describe who he is on the surface. The movie that was finished with only 34 scenes, “Crimes of Our Neighborhood,” the main actor of this movie is Shin Hyun Joon.

This comes at a surprise since he usually took the role of the hero in movies produced by big name companies. Just like most of the low budget movies, “Crimes of Our Neighborhood” was stored away for two years since filming.

He put more meaning into ‘first.’ He also said ‘thank you’.

> Actor Shin Hyun Joon… “I am attracted more towards normal people”

“I experienced so many things for the first time with this movie. Such a low budget film, and the role of a detective were both my first in my 21 years as an actor. People say that this movie is a low budget film, but I really didn’t expect to be having an interview about this. Technically, this is a huge opening for this movie and I am thankful for this.”

He also talked about the movie’s director, Min Byung Jin, who debuted with “2PM on Saturday,” in 1998, and became popular with “This is Law” in 2001. His third movie, “Crimes of Our Neighborhood,” is also a crime movie. This work is his first film in 10 years. Director Min said “it’s almost a miracle to come back into the movie industry after 10 years. I am excited and also nervous at the same time.”

Shin Hyun Joon said “Han Suk Gyu told me that he was going crazy when he had a break for a long time. Director Min wants to become like Alfred Hitchcock and I wish that this movie does well so that he can achieve his goal.”

The first things people think of when they hear the name Shin Hyun Joon are the scandals, and the immature actor that seems like he will never mature. However, he unexpectedly had a side that cares for others and sacrifices himself to help them.

He himself said “In the past, I liked heroes but now I am more attracted towards people.”

“Barefooted Ki Bong” “Mother” “Students”

We asked him why this sudden change from heroes to people, and he mentioned “Barefooted Ki Bong.” “Barefooted Ki Bong” is the hit movie that opened in theaters in 2006. The movie was viewed by 3 million people and Shin Hyun Joon took the role of a 40 year old man who has the mental age of 8.

Shin Hyun Joon said “Did you know that the production for the movie was halted at one time?”

“It was the first time this ever happened. When the investors heard that I will act as the main character, they said ‘can he really do it?’ and started to pull their funds out. I was really shocked but I found out that there were reasons for everything. I didn’t know how to act out this particular character.”

Since then, he started to volunteer to help out the mentally ill patients and when he started to know the pain they had to live with, investors started to show up one by one. It was then that Ki Bong became a reality.

Ki Bong brought another change to Shin Hyun Joon. He had to film the entire movie in a crunched up position and since his next movie had a lot of action scenes, he hurt his neck while filming “Last Gift.” This led to paralysis, and he had to receive surgery.

“They said that if I don’t immediately get a surgery, I won’t be able to use my body at all. I called my mom then. She found a way for me to get fixed up without surgery using shots. This hurt a lot. I was getting treated with my face down since the needle has to go through the back of my neck and the blood came to my face and the tears carried the blood with them when they dropped to the floor. My mother held my hand tightly when that happened. She then said to the doctor, ‘my son has labored for 20 years, please have him stand again.’”

He said that he realized how selfish he has been for the 40 years of his life. Shin Hyun Joon’s mother wanted his son to become a professor. This is also the reason why he became a professor in In Duk University.

Shin Hyun Joon said “I usually lecture in an auditorium without my shoes and I think I go crazy during my lectures.” He spends 3 hours a day lecturing and barely gets 2 days of rest a week.

He said “There’s something I say often to my students.”

“My students ask me this after they listen to my lectures. ‘I am a comedy major’ ‘I am a musical major but I want to become a movie actor like you professor.’ Then I tell them this. ‘It’s all about multiple areas now. You should strive to get better at acting, singing, and comedy all at once, why do you insist on only one?’ I joined a variety show as an MC last year to prove this to my students.

These changes just kept coming one after another. He is already in his mid 40’s. He is even attempting to produce a movie next year.

He was asked if he liked the finished product of “Crimes of Our Neighborhood” and he said “there is definitely room for improvement. But if we always got what we wanted, will there be any improvement?” His life’s motto is that there can’t be anything perfect, so that he will work harder to improve, and that will lead to becoming more mature.
