Korean war flick "The Frontline" became the country's most-watched film over the weekend, putting an end to Harry Potter's magical spell on the local box office.
Estimates by the Korean Box Office System (KOBIS) released on Monday showed that "The Frontline," which opened in theaters on July 20, attracted 474,439 moviegoers during the three-day period of July 29 to 31.
"The Frontline," starring actors Ko Soo and Shin Ha-kyun, is based on the 30 months before the Korean War ended. Kim Soo-hyuk (Ko) is a lieutenant who slowly goes through changes as he experiences the war firsthand while stationed at the frontline of the 38th parallel.
Meanwhile, Korean action comedy "Quick," featuring Lee Min-ki and Kang Yea-won, climbed up one spot to No. 2 with 466,845 admissions and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2," starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, was pushed back to third place with 434,929 tickets sold.
The latest Marvel superhero comic-to-film "Captain America: The First Avenger" made its debut in fourth place, selling 256,212 tickets since opening in local theaters on July 28 and Korean animation "Leafie, A Hen Into the Wild" flew up five spots to No. 5 with 228,806 admits.
Other movies in the top ten were "Rio," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Cars 2," "Sunny" and "Doraemon: Nobita and the New Steel Troops: Angel Wings."
