...Hallyu began roughly 12 years ago when the rest of Asia discovered Korean soap operas. One of the breakthrough dramas was a series 'Winter Sonata' starring Choi Ji-woo & Bae Young-Joon. After that, more Korean dramas saw their way to foreign shores and Korean films and music started to follow suit. Korean marketing people started to see a Korea-centric trend. MBC’s “Light and Shadow” has stretched its winning streak while KBS’ “Love Rain” has failed to end its winless drought.
“Light and Shadow” continued its reign atop this week’s Monday and Tuesday primetime lineup by posting an average viewership rating of 20.5 percent, according to data compiled by TNmS (Total National Multimedia Statistics).
Featuring actor Ahn Jae-wook, actress Nam Sang-mi and singer Son Dambi, the drama has been recording promising numbers in terms of audience ratings every week, with the cast of big name celebrities and its description of one of the darkest times in Korean history --between the 1970s and 1980s.
SBS’ “Fashion King” landed in second by averaging 10.1 percent of the total viewership ratings during the two days.
The drama and its main casts -- Yoo Ah-in, Shin Se-gyeong, Kwon Yoori and Lee Je-hoon -- have received much criticism from the viewers and TV critics after the ninth and tenth episodes aired this week, due to the excessively complicated relationships of the four.
Coming in last on the chart was Jang Keun-suk and Yoona’s “Love Rain” which failed to survive from its four-week long drought and its viewership ratings stayed low in the five percent range this week.
Meanwhile, data by AGB Nielson Media Research showed the dramas in similar order, but with slightly higher numbers on its Monday and Tuesday ratings chart.
“Light and Shadow” stood strong atop the list with an average rating of 23.1 percent, followed by “Fashion King” grabbing the No. 2 spot with 10.1 percent and “Love Rain” took the No. 3 spot with 5.7 percent.
