Drama "Iris" & Starring Actor Lee Byung-hun Win Tokyo Drama Awards

KBS Global [2010-10-14]

According to Taewon Entertainment on October 14th, the popular drama "Iris" will be receiving the Foreign Project Special Award at the Tokyo Drama Awards on the 25th . The Tokyo Drama Awards is a part of the Tokyo Drama Festival and awards notable works selected from all the dramas aired on Japanese television.?

As if one award wasn't enough for the staff behind the hit series to smile smugly about, starring actor Lee Byung-hun is set to also be awarded the Best Actor In Asia award.

That's quite a title for any actor to carry, but officials from the awards show expressed that Lee is indeed worthy of it. They said, "When selecting the winner for this [Best Actor In Asia] award, of course we took into consideration Lee Byung-hun's outstanding acting, but in addition to that, there was also the factor that "Iris" is being exported and broadcast in countries all over the world, receiving lots of support from viewers."

Song Wan-mo is the CEO of Artist View -- the company in charge of the marketing of "Iris" in Japan -- and he said that it's unprecedented for a Korean drama series like "Iris" to walk away with two big awards from the Tokyo Drama Awards. Song added that "Iris" will really help establish Korea's position in the Japanese entertainment industry.

Song used the word "unprecedented" which seems to be linked with the hit drama a lot. It was recently announced that "Iris" attracted 10.1% of TV viewers in Japan with its first episode. For a Korean drama to be shown during primetime Japanese television in and of itself was unprecedented, but to have such relatively high ratings? Quite the notable feat.

It should be noted though that this isn't the first time a Korean project has walked away with a Tokyo Drama Award. The 2008 drama "Gold Bride" and "Beethoven's Virus" from 2009 both each won an award.
