2. Berlin International Film Festival, Germany (Feb 5 – 15, 2004):
For my money, the best film at Berlin so far has not been in the main competition but in the international cinema sidebar. Untold Scandal, by the South Korean director E.J. Yong, is an exquisite reworking of Dangerous Liaisons transplanted to 18th-century Korea. The story of a cynical seduction that turns to grand romance, then to tragedy, is revitalised by this magnificent-looking film. Its eroticism, mystery and poignancy are captivating and the performances are outstanding. It surely can't be long before the rest of the world will be able to see this marvellous film. The prize for Best Artistic, Technical or Creative Contribution goes to E J-yong for the direction of “Untold Scandal”.
The accredited journalists at the festival awarded the “Stefano Reggiani” special prize from the Veneto’s Order of Journalists to “Untold Scandal” (South Korea), directed by E J-yong, for the following reasons: “For the chromatic elegance of the photography, which creates descriptive and lyrical scenes of luminous incisiveness; for the balance of contrasting emotions played as opposing forces yet voices of a solid musical harmony. For the symbolic value of detail and its meticulous care, open to allegory and metaphor; and for the sound-track: orchestral counterpoint which is discreet – subtly minimal, never overpowering”.

6. Barcelona Asian Film Festival, Spain (Apr 30- May 8, 2004): Opening Film
The best way to start BAFF was with one of the latest jewels from that country: Untold Scandal. Directed by E J-yong, this period film is an adaptation of the classic French novel “Dangerous Liasions”, but this time transposed to fit Korea’s Chosun Dinasty period. And it sure works! The story works perfectly well, portraying the struggles between the repressive customs of that period and people’s desires, with that Korean touch. The director, with the help of impressive performances from all the cast, the beautiful scenery and a brilliant production design, is capable of creating a superb movie which surely deserves a viewing!

7. Seattle International Film Festival, USA (May 20 – Jun 13, 2004): the largest film festival in the U.S.
I've now seen the Dangerous Liason story done at least three times, and this is every bit as good as any other version. Actually, the story translates very well into a Korean film of nobility and manners in the 18th century. This film has unbelievably wonderful costumes, makeup, hair, sets. Every visual aspect was under total control and seemed authentic. The acting was above average. … the best looking film of the festival so far. -from 2004 Seattle International Film Festival Journal

The central performance from Bae Yong-Jun, as the seducer Jo-won, is magnificent combining sublime charm and base deceit. Equally, Lee Mi-Suk as the arch manipulator Lady Cho, would be an outstanding Lady Macbeth on this form.

"How queer Mr. Director was at yo scenes"

A 'yo' scene... a very witty term referring to a bed scene of a period movie. Women with whom Jo Won slept were numerous, including kisaengs, So-ok who was both a would-be concubine to the husband of Lady Jo, Jo Won's cousin, and a daughter to his ex-mistress (what a mom and daughter they were!), etc, Therefore, I shot a number of yo scenes...

Jo Won, yes, he really has many women, I thought. It was not merely its performance but its appearance on the big screen that annoyed me. Moreover, it was also the role of a male actor to cover the actress when she became strained with yo scenes. However, I myself had never shot those scenes before! Worried that I might feel awkward at my first bed scenes, Mr. Director was so kind as to give a bodily demonstration of every bed scene.

Mr. Director demonstrating solemnly those things ranging from odd moans to queer motions looked to me no less than a savior. The shooting site was filled with tension... Something must be wrong. Mr. Director and Sister PD, looking at the monitor, were exchanging words in a low voice for fear that someone might overhear them. I gave an unnecessarily loud shout, "Well, what are you two talking about? Please speak up for me to hear you!!" At the instant, the site was full of laughter.

However, I seem not to have succeeded in hiding the pressing tension despite of my hard effort to shake it off. The picture, taken at the interval of yo scenes, shows me making a face with the head twisted to one side, at the corner of the shooting site...

"Sister Lee Misook, may I call you Big Brother?"

I felt particularly at ease whenever there was a shooting with Sister Misook. Perhaps thanks to her deep and rich personality, I could appreciate every advice of her who took the voluntary duty of a training instructor. The range of her view was wider than anyone else at the shooting site to an extent that she was called 'production director'.

I felt very respectful of her who could turn her rich experiences into care and generosity for her juniors and peers. She shows personally what a 'senior' should be. I sometimes felt like calling her 'Big Brother'...

Toward the end of filming, I could afford psychological serenity to pick up a camera and took to my own photographing. This picture of Sister Misook was taken by me at the interval between shooting scenes for the opening title sequence where I exchanged a subtle glance with her for the first time: she, in a magnificent white court dress, was discussing on the next scene with Sister PD. The presence of Sister Misook seen through the viewfinder of a camera either still or in motion pictures was felt very huge to beyond expression.

"What a pity for Mr. Director to waste his acting skill..."

Although I'd already heard that Director Lee Jaeyong was meticulous, it was far beyond imagination. His sense of humor was also extraordinary. How terse and witty his word was! It was such that you would explode into laughter only when you went your way one or two steps, and then, stopping your way, would look back at him again.

Moreover, his demonstration of acting for characters was another fun of the shooting site. His demonstrations for wicked and bewitching expressions of Lady Jo, deceitful manners of Jo Won, and decent walking of Lady Sook as well made me wonder why he didn't become an actor himself.

The picture shows me, standing side by side with him and following his hand movements. As we studied together which performance could be better, our postures and expressions might get assimilated. The poises of Mr. Director and me looking down at the monitor are almost the same, excepting the difference of our heights. Another characteristic of him is that he never shouts. Mr. Director in my photos was shown only in silhouette, buried in the background; like himself who didn't lose his own pace, however noisy his surrounding was.

"Hurry up, finish kissing quickly!"

While on persistent operation to seduce Lady Sook, the role of JDY, I was shooting a kissing scene, the supposedly fatal blow to her. Its tension was no less than that of yo scenes. Though the kissing was instant, it meant Lady Sook the first bodily relationship confirming her feelings of love, and to me, the flashing realization that she, unlike other women, should not be trifled with.

As the expression of this subtle feeling was more difficult than the smile of a playboy, I made quite many NGs. Moreover, as hairs of my beard and mustache glued around my mouth fell off, I had to redress them whenever I made an NG. As it kept raining on of off, with changeable weather, the staff was also worried. The looks of those surrounding the two serious-looking actors were graver. They might urge secretly, "Hurry up, finish kissing quickly!!! Before we have more rain!!!"

"All of you did really great jobs"

Nobody who hasn't experienced the hardship of the staff can know the degree of their difficulties. To say nothing of the long preparation term and the great shooting trail from winter to summer, as it was a period movie which required the attentive hands of the staff to every bit of its details, the sight of the staff working at the location was enormously touching.

The art team was busy applying bean oil on the all corners of the floor in the Korean room within camera angles, and sprinkling water there for better color effect. They worked so hard that the shooting director, checking camera angles, would shout, "No! That's out of the angle! No more of it!!!"

However, they would not know how beautiful they looked every instant. Click, click, as I photographed their looks with my camera, their memories were kept in my mind. The filming period was felt only too long at the time...

The story behind the scene of BYJ’s first movie “Untold Scandal” have many interesting things as much as the movie itself. And who else would tell those stories better than BYJ himself? But I have to edit this story into 2 parts because it is a little bit long, I hope you don’t mind. To know all stories behind the scene make us realized the hardship of making one movie. Let’s go back to those scenes together now.

"My God, 4 months' shooting from now on... Luckily, I didn't seal the contract yet"

It's not until both the movie company and I had to pass over several obstacles that I was given the role of Jo Won, the unprecedented playboy. As for my party, all including my managers objected desperately to my choice of a 'period movie' as my debut to the silver screen. And Mr. Director himself never dreamt to cast me as Jo Won. I could understand them. Judged from my drama images, it was sure to be a venture. The stronger the objections from my acquaintances became, however, the more intensely something from my inside kept signaling, "It's my role".

Nevertheless, I couldn't imagine myself wearing a topknot, either. I as well as the movie company agreed to a tentative makeup test: I took off glasses, wore a beard and mustache, then a traditional costume, and then a topknot. When I did all my hair up into a topknot, and tightened the manggeon for the first time in my life, my head started to ache all at once. My only thought at the moment was to throw away everything.

Director Lee Jaeyong was so meticulous that he would not permit girding a manggeon around short hair when wearing a topknot. Umm, then, I would always have to do my hair up tight like this... Their unanimous inspiring responses that it suited me surprisingly well made me forget the ache, but only for an instant... Four months' shooting period... I felt dizzy in the head... Umm...didn't I seal the contract yet, did I?

ผู้กำกับลีแจยองเป็นคนพิถีพิถันอย่างมาก ขนาดที่ไม่ยอมให้มีเส้นผมหลุดออกมาจากวิกแม้สักเส้น ผมจึงต้องเกล้าผมจนแน่นแบบนี้ทุกครั้ง มีเสียงตอบรับเป็นเอกฉันท์ว่าผมใส่ชุดโบราณขึ้นจริงๆ จนทำให้ผมลืมความเจ็บไปเลย แต่ก็แค่ชั่วครู่เดียวเท่านั้น ตลอดระยะเวลาถ่ายทำ 4 เดือน ผมรู้สึกเวียนหัวไปหมด นี่ผมตกลงเซ็นสัญญาไปแล้วใช่มั้ยเนี่ย

"Press hard! I've done enough for myself..."

All the actors make it a rule to prepare much before starting their new works, but, this time, I had to learn even 'how to walk' newly. Before shooting, I learned the poise of the nobility, manners of wearing a traditional costume, and the tea ceremony. Trying this or that gesture in an unaccustomed traditional costume, I felt even walking was difficult. I also had to learn how to ride a horse and to use a sword.

Moreover, as Jo Won kept porno graphs of his love affairs with women, I had to learn drawing Korean paintings as well. Our ancestors were said to be good at everything; they were not only good at poetry, calligraphy and painting, but could plan their own houses. How lucky I am to be born in the 20th century!

There still remained an important task of weight loss; muscular physique didn't become a scholar in the Joseon Dynasty. For 2 months until the movie crank-in I increased the amount of exercise greatly and began a spare diet. At last everybody, on seeing me, began to mention I had lost weight.

However, the staff whom I met almost everyday didn't show any response. One day when shooting was taken in Andong, I told Producer Yujin and still photographer Taehwan triumphantly to press me down on the abdomen, only to receive no response from them. Saying "Well, how can we tell that you have lost weight or not, because we don't know how you were before?", they hurried to the snack table...

On Feb. 6, 2003. At last came the first day of shooting. Cold winter wind pierced into me through the thin traditional costume. There held a sacrifice to gods for the safe progress of filming. I, together with Sister Misook, and Ms. Doyon, made ceremonial deep bows toward the smiling head of a pig with bills of money in its mouth.

That posture of propping hair with her hands, to support the weight of her 4kg-heavy wig, would harass Sister Misook throughout the shooting period more than my topknot did me. What did I think of, while bowing that deeply? Jo Won in blindingly white robe made wishes softly...
ท่าประคองทรงผมไว้ด้วยมือเพื่อรับน้ำหนักวิกอันแสนหนักอึ้งถึง 4 ก.ก. นั้น คงทำร้ายพี่มิซุกตลอดการถ่ายทำมากกว่าวิกของผมเป็นแน่แท้ ผมคิดอะไรอยู่ตอนที่ก้มลงคำนับ โชวอนในชุดสีขาวสะอาดกำลังอธิษฐานเบาๆ

Mr. Director, staff members, Sister Misook, Ms. Doyon...all of them are competent and trustworthy...may we finish this long trail safe and sound! Then, the new movie actor Bae Yongjoon murmured his wishes... May my first movie not disappoint those nice persons who believe me with their best...may it be kept as a page of good memory in my life album!

"Cigarettes increase in number, whereas my body decreases in weight!"
It is quite true that nothing on the earth is easy to deal with. Dialogues such as 'hath done', 'dost thou know...' were like no less than foreign jargons to me, and their quantity were substantial. Moreover, the insidiousness of the character Jo Won was beyond imagination. Though I had spoken countless sweet dialogues and dropped much tear, I could not tackle easily such a character as was confessing sincere love with his own mouth, but, on turning around, was wearing a mean smile instantly.
มันเป็นความจริงทีเดียวที่ไม่มีอะไรบนโลกนี้ได้มาง่ายๆ บทสนทนาต่างๆ เป็นเหมือนภาษาต่างด้าวสำหรับผม แถมแต่ละบทก็ยาวไม่ใช่เล่น แถมความเจ้าเล่ห์ร้อยมารยาของโชวอนก็เหลือจะจินตนาการ ถึงผมจะเคยพูดคำหวานๆ มานับไม่ถ้วน เคยหลั่งน้ำตามามากมาย แต่มันไม่ง่ายเลยจริงๆ กับบทบาทที่ต้องสารภาพความรักอันจริงใจผ่านริมฝีปาก แต่พอหันหลังปุ๊บเขากลับยิ้มเจ้าเล่ห์ในทันทีทันใด

The taciturn Director Lee Jaeyong seemed much worried inwardly. Ah~~ my hand turned automatically to a cigarette that I had stopped for a while. I could hear my weight reducing. I should not have lost weight intentionally before. His serious expression seen in the picture was captured at Seoul Cinema Complex on one day among the two months when the Buyongjeong scenes had been being shot. Might he want to fly away the sense of obligation and stress in cigarette smoke...?

Q. Recently there is tremendous BYJ hot wind in Asia as well. Do you actually feel it? I am curious about your feeling.

A. I rather have been felling it because whenever there are events, many fans from Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China∙∙∙ etc., would come there and also I receives frequent fan letters. However, because I had never visited those places, I only feel sorry for them. After I finish the movie and if there is a chance, I dearly want to visit them.

ถาม - เมื่อเร็วๆนี้ มีเบยองจุนดังมากเหมือนกระแสลมร้อนในแถบเอเซีย คุณรู้สึกอย่างไรกับเรื่องนี้ ? ฉันอยากทราบความรู้สึกของคุณค่ะ

Q. Is it true that you received an offer a drama from China? If true, have you decided to appear?

A. Of course I'd love to if I were given an opportunity. It is a happy thing for an actor to stand on the more expanded stage. In order to do that, I think that I have to do my best at this very moment. Then a good chance would come.

ถาม - คุณเคยวางแผนในอนาคตที่จะไปประเทศอื่นอีกไหมคะ นอกจากจีนแล้ว ?

ตอบ - แน่นอนครับ ผมก็อยากทำอย่างนั้นเหมือนกันถ้าผมมีโอกาส มันเป็นความสุขอย่างหนึ่งของนักแสดงที่จะได้แสดงในหลายๆ เวที ในการที่จะทำอย่างนั้นได้ ผมคิดว่าผมจะต้องทำให้ดีที่สุดในทุกๆ ช่วงของเวลา โอกาสดีๆ ก็คงจะมาถึงครับ

Q. Do you have any special plan after you finish movie?

A. Although I have an idea to do one or two more movies after finishing the work on this movie, I am not going to place any limitation on either dramas or movies. Even though the most actors have perception that once getting into movie, one would stay there for about 3 years, I would not necessarily insist upon only the movie. Once there is good script and good opportunity, the medium, either the movie or the drama, is not important.

ถาม - คุณมีโครงการพิเศษหลังจากแสดงหนังเสร็จแล้วหรือยังคะ ?

Q. As I have heard that you are planning a visual image book to commemorate 10 years since your debut, is there really anything planned?

A. I got an offer from a foreign country for the visual image book. By the way it would not contain semi-nude as falsely reported in the newspapers. It was rather an offer for an image album for the fans in Japan, Taiwan, and China and I too consider it well meaning to have an image photo album, which would be filled with my youthful appearance. However, definite decision was not made yet and it is being put off due to the movie at this time. In closing, a comment to the fans. It seems not to be enough although I always say thanks to fans. Thank you for always worrying about me and giving me unsparing love. Please expect for this fall because I work very hard at filming movie in order to show you good appearances.

He is a royal prince. I am talking about the real royal prince, not the prince syndrome.
Among the company whom I have worked with, he is the very man, who, I came to think, is the most “like a prince”. I am interested in the princes but dislike prince syndrome. Those two are undeniably different. The charisma felt from BYJ, his image management, and also his appearance facing work are greatly admirable.

On the other hand, he is broad-minded and is always full of self-confidence. Speaking of BYJ as a photo object, he is the one with exquisite feeling as he has grand scale, is handsome like sculptures, and is overflowing with manly charm. I worked with him for the first time in “Sympathy 2” and felt that he was a simple and well-mannered man. The only thing I would worry is that he is too perfect to find fault with. Because that would rather cut down his humane attractiveness. Lately, I tend to work with stars deliberately keeping some distances from them. Because I think it is better to work as I see them with audience’s eyes. I came to think that, just some times, it would rather be good to take pictures while I look up stars just like fans. Star BYJ is in that kind. When I work with him, I feel like doing it while I become one of his fans, look him up, and fill my heart with his merits.

At present, BYJ is concentrating in the filming of the movie. Because his personality naturally does not allow him to easily touch another thing once he begins one, his attitude toward the movie is truly tremendous. It was to the degree that co-star Lee Misook threw a joke about him, “he might die in the line of duty on the shooting site” Probably because he has attitude of disliking appearance in the press, he is told by people that he is a difficult and arrogant (?) actor.

Although even the very famous actors would appear in the TV talk shows and chitchat about themselves for an hour, BYJ has not done that at all until now. May it be all that he briefly appeared with co-actors in Special Show for the public relation purpose while he was shooting at that? (That show was not broadcast on TV). Because of that, they tend to use the metaphor of saying. Do you think you are BYJ? When the stars refuse the casting in the entertainment field. However, people who have chance to work closely with BYJ would know what kind of man he really is.

On the shooting site, BYJ is well known for showing passionate and perfect appearance and at the same time for the most courteous and humble person. Quite some time ago, when there was a brief showing of college student BYJ on TV, I also thought just like that. The appearance of him, eating and chatting in company with college students, was an every inch a college student BYJ. Even the students would doubt if he was really a top star BYJ when he ordinarily took a walk on the campus with out any star attitude. BYJ thought that it was more important to show his fans the appearance of an ordinary man, BYJ’s of everyday life instead of star, BYJ- as published on the press.

The elder brother* (*BYJ called by Park Yongha) was much impressed by the fact that famous foreign actors would stand up and initiate greeting the unfamiliar fans as he saw in the Beverly Hills. Thus he advised me, “if possible, do not put on cap and when you meet your fans, make a habit of first recognizing them and greeting them”. -From the interview with Park Yongha.

Q. Who are your close colleagues as it looks as if you have many buddy entertainers, whom you occasionally meet such as entertainer’s sports gatherings?

A. There is a golf gathering, which holds regular meeting once a month. We play golf on the field and build up friendship. The seniors, Ahn Seonggi, Park Joonghoon, Kim Seunwoo, and Mr. Jeong Wooseong & Jang Donggeon, etc. are the main members. I love to meet with people after a long time, play golf and chat on the useful topics. However, I miss them lately because I am not able to participate in because of the filming of the movie.

Q. When do you exercise, as you do not have time? ∙∙∙∙∙∙

A. I do exercise on the movie filming sites on every spare moment. With light exercising equipment such as dumbbells∙∙∙ Because of that I have better body than before. Despite the weight loss, the body seems to look better. I am managing my physical shape every day without a miss.

ถาม - คุณออกกำลังกายเมื่อไรคะในเมื่อคุณไม่ค่อยมีเวลา?

ตอบ - ผมออกกำลังกายที่กองถ่ายภาพยนตร์ทุกๆ ครั้งที่มีเวลาว่าง ด้วยอุปกรณ์ออกกำลังกายเบาๆ เช่น ดัมบ์เบลล์ เพราะยังงั้นผมถึงมีรูปร่างที่ดีกว่าเมื่อก่อน ถึงแม้น้ำหนักจะลดลง, ร่างกายดูเหมือนดีกว่าเดิม ผมจะจัดการดูแลรูปร่างของตัวเองทุกวันโดยไม่เคยลืม

Q. As you are famous for having many enthusiastic fans who would visit the location sites preparing good for entire staff, how do you feel about those passionate fans?
A. I feel sorry as well as thankful. The strawberries, loach soup & custom-ordered Korean court cakes, etc∙∙∙ They brought them so much that there would be left over after all staff ate. Even though I greatly appreciate all those fans, I have stronger mind of sorry because I made them spend that much money. And I would also give my thanks to staff because they took care of my fans more than I did. Because other staff paid more attention to them for me. Although it is my share of duty, I would like to convey my gratitude to them as well.

ถาม - การที่คุณมีชื่อเสียง มีแฟนหนังที่กระตือรือร้นมาเยี่ยมถึงกองถ่ายทำ เตรียมอะไรดีๆ ให้ทีมงาน คุณรู้สึกอย่างไรเกี่ยวกับแฟนๆ ที่กระตือรือร้นของคุณบ้าง?

Q. Have you prepared any present recently?

A..Recently I gave a present to Lee Yoojin, PD. Not only I but also other staff & co-actors all together gave her birthday presents. It is to express thanks with hearts. I will keep it a secret about what I had bought.

ตอบ - เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผมให้ของขวัญกับ ลียูจิน, Producer ไม่เพียงผมคนเดียว แต่เจ้าหน้าที่คนอื่น และนักแสดงร่วมทุกคน ได้ให้ของขวัญวันเกิดกับเธอ มันเป็นการแสดงความขอบคุณด้วยหัวใจ ผมจะเก็บมันไว้ความลับว่าผมซื้ออะไรให้เธอ

Q. What are your favorite keepsakes you always carry with you in your car?

A. My camera, light exercise equipment and books. There are books on the interior regarding housing life, books on croquis works, photographic book, and other various books, which fans have sent to me. To tell you the truth, although I am not able to read too many books nowadays as I am too short of time, I do read books from fans on and off while I am on the move.

Q. When asked if he ever imagined his look 10 years later, he said that

A..would I probably still act and follow the path of movie producer, which is my long-kept dream? On the homely life, he would have a wife & children and lead an ordinary life also with a dog. Despite saying that I like a woman who understands my work, is kind to family, is wise, and has common interests with me, BYJ said the word “love” is difficult to define after all. In one interview, he said that he felt meaningless about the words “I love you” when talking about a forever love, which the drama was pursuing. May be because of that, in reality, BYJ does not waste “I love you” He said that true love would be wanting to say “I love you” for the first time when one feels lovely at he look of the back of a wife who is washing dishes after one is over 40 years of age.

ถาม - เมื่อถามเขาว่าถ้าให้เขาจินตนาการตัวเองในอีก 10 ปีข้างหน้าจะเป็นอย่างไร เขาตอบว่า

ตอบ - คงเป็นไปได้ที่ผมยังคงแสดงหนัง และติดตามเส้นทางของการเป็นผู้โปรดิวเซอร์ภาพยนตร์ อะไรคือสิ่งที่ผมฝันมานานแล้ว? ชีวิตครอบครัวครับ, ผมจะมีภรรยาและลูก ใช้ชีวิตธรรมดา และเลี้ยงสุนัข ถึงอย่างไรก็ตามผมพูดได้ว่าผมชอบผู้หญิงที่เข้าใจงานของผม, รักครอบครัว, ฉลาด และมีความสนใจในสิ่งเดียวกับผม

Q. What kind of person is “Jo Won” as viewed by BYJ?

A. In one word, it is all right to say that he is the Chosun period’s best playboy whom one cannot hate, who runs a playboy life, giving up the power and fame. Right at moment I read the script, I was attracted to this man “Jo Won”. Because he would refuse the official government position and enjoy the refined tastes, despite possessing all he needed. Cool-headed and having mean personality, he is a man of humor and intrepidity. As I act as Jo Won for a long time, what I have learned from him was the very fact, the ways to become a playboy. Do you know what? The fact is that playboys have to be diligent. Not everyone could do that because he has to spare their time to work (?) on several projects. He is a very busy person.

ถาม - “โจวอน” เป็นคนแบบไหนในสายตา เบยองจุน

ตอบ - อย่างแรก, มันใช่ที่จะพูดว่า เขาเป็นเพลย์บอยที่ดีที่สุดในยุคสมัยโชซอน ซึ่งไม่มีใครไม่ชอบเขา ผู้ซึ่งใช้ชีวิตเพลย์บอย ปฏิเสธอำนาจและชื่อเสียง ตอนที่ผมได้อ่านบท ผมรู้สึกประทับใจในชายชื่อ “โจวอน” คนนี้ เพราะเขาปฏิเสธตำแหน่งทางการเมือง และชื่นชอบการคัดสรรกลั่นกรองในสิ่งที่พอใจ, เป็นเจ้าของครอบครองทุกสิ่งที่เขาต้องการโดยไม่คำนึงถึงสิ่งใด ความคิดที่ยอดเยี่ยม และบุคลิกที่มีความหมาย, เขาเป็นชายที่มีอารมณ์ขัน และกล้าหาญ การที่ผมแสดงเป็น “โจวอน” เป็นเวลานาน อะไรที่ผมได้เรียนรู้จากเขา เป็นความจริงมาก, วิธีที่จะกลายเป็นเพลย์บอย คุณรู้อะไรไหม ความจริงเพลย์บอยนั้นจะต้องขยัน ไม่ทุกคนหรอกที่จะสามารถทำเพราะเขาจะต้องมีเวลาว่างที่จะทำงานจริงไหม (ทำงานอะไร? อิอิ) ใน 2 ถึง 3 โครงการ เขาเป็นคนที่ยุ่งมากๆ

Q. Do you have any character you used as a text to act “Jo Won” character with somewhat ease? Or are there any movie or data that had helped your acting?

A…I have seen all the movies which share the original novel, such as , , & . All three works have unique characteristics and give the different feeling. And there should be something unique in , which is different from them.

ถาม - คุณเคยได้รับบทบางอย่างที่สามารถช่วยให้แสดงเป็น “โจวอน” ง่ายขึ้น หรือมีหนังเรื่องใด หรือข้อมูลใดที่ช่วยในการแสดงของคุณ?

ตอบ - ผมได้ดูภาพยนตร์ซึ่งดัดแปลงมาจากนวนิยายต้นฉบับ อย่างเช่น , และ ทั้งสามเรื่องเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว และให้ความรู้สึกที่แตกต่างกัน และมีเอกลักษณ์บางอย่างใน ซึ่งแตกต่างจากทั้งสามเรื่อง



Q. What was the hardest thing while you filmed the movie?

A…No matter what, the most difficult thing was the problem of wearing, eating, & living. It was uncomfortable to eat due to beards, and because the costumes are traditional ones, it was uncomfortable to put on, take off and to move around∙∙∙ In particular, the topknot hair-do was the hardest thing to bear. It was to the extent that it cut off the blood circulation to the head and caused bruises. However, it is somewhat better now because I became used to it. It was also hard to correct my way of talking. Because I may have gotten a habit from acting in the dramas, soft talking has become my nature. In addition, I felt awkward to carry on the dialogue in ancient language, which I ordinarily don’t use often so that I frequently committed no takes. Because of that I would get O.K. signs only after I strained hard in my neck and talked in over-action.


ถาม - สิ่งที่ยากที่สุดในขณะถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์คืออะไร

Q. What do you feel somewhat lacking in regard to the movie progress?

A. I feel much lacking myself. Although there will be some make-ups as retouching work is in progress in the future, I particularly feel lacking in the snowing winter scenes in which I could have done better. You know it is difficult to make-up for it now because the scene was filmed in the winter.

Q. Do you have any episode while you were filming the movie?

A. Although it is very hot summer-like weather in Seoul now, it is very cold in the location sites such as Yongin Folk Villiage, Andong Hawhoe Villiage, and Haenam, etc probably because they are the quiet rural villages without modern buildings. Because of the wide range of daily temperature differences, not only I but also all staff are suffering from the colds.

Having been shown only as a lovely and dandy man like a royal prince on the white horse on TV, with what kind of appearance he is indeed going to melt our hearts on the screen? The fact is that BYJ had appeared after boldly taking off his glasses, which was a symbol of his intelligent images, tightly hiding his hair, which gave tender impression of him, in the top-knot, and wearing the ancient cloak instead of long trench coat with good atmosphere. Q . How do you feel as you are to challenge the movie for the first time?

A. I have faced the movie with a mind as if I would start anew. I tried to become a true movie character, “Jo Won”, not the “JoWon” actor BYJ is acting. Because of that I distanced myself from the script while acting in this time unlike when I acted in TV dramas. It is true that I was faithful in practicing dialogues in the past until the script was torn apart. However, by distancing myself from the script, I felt like that I become faithful the man “Jo Won”

as I naturally get used to the sense of location site. I am very delightful that other appearance of me that was present inside of myself is shown.

ถาม - คุณรู้สึกอย่างไรกับการเข้าสู่วงการภาพยนตร์เป็นครั้งแรก ?

ตอบ - ผมมุ่งหน้าเข้าสู่วงการภาพยนตร์ด้วยใจ คิดว่า ถ้าผมเริ่มต้นทำอะไรใหม่ๆ ผมพยายามที่จะกลายเป็นคาแร็กเตอร์จริงๆ ในภาพยนตร์เรื่องนั้น เป็น “โจวอน” แบบที่ไม่ใช่ “โจวอน” แบบฉบับผมอะไรทำนองนั้น เพราะอย่างนั้น ผมห่างไกลความเป็นตัวเองขณะที่แสดงตามบทภาพยนตร์ที่ได้รับ ซึ่งไม่เหมือนกับการแสดงละครโทรทัศน์

Q. There is a lot of interest because is your first show in the movie and because you have been hitting home runs in every drama on the TV you had appeared so far. In addition as this movie could become a very important work in BYJ’s acting life for the big change, which is definitely different from the previous ones in the aspect of your acting, don’t you feel the burden?

A…If I say that it doesn’t burden me, it is a lie. However, advices from senior actors, Park Joonghoon and Kim Sung woo who had said that “the actors have to experience many roles on the big screen gave me great strength. In addition, because I believe in director Lee Jae yong who had directed and and the refined actors, Lee Mi sook & Jeon Do yeon, I think that if I too put in my best efforts, there surely is going to be a good result.
ถาม.- มีความน่าสนใจมาก เพราะ “SCANDLE” เป็นภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกของคุณ และเป็นเพราะคุณกำลังได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากจากละครทุกเรื่องที่คุณแสดงทางโทรทัศน์ อย่างที่กล่าวมา หนังเรื่องนี้จึงกลายเป็นงานที่สำคัญมากๆ งานหนึ่งในชีวิตการแสดงของเบยองจุนสำหรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งใหญ่ ซึ่งแตกต่างอย่างแน่นอนจากบทบาทก่อนหน้านี้ คุณรู้สึกกดดันไหม?

Q. No one had ever imagined that BYJ’s debut movie would be a historical drama. What is the reason to select the historical drama, which you have not yet once challenged even in the drama so far? ?

A..I did not choose this movie because it was a historical drama. When I first read the script, it attracted me very much and also because the director is respectable, I thought there was no more hesitation.
ถาม - ไม่มีใครที่จะเคยคิดว่า ภาพยนตร์เรื่องแรกของเบยองจุนจะเป็นภาพยนตร์ชีวิตแนวย้อนยุค. อะไรเป็นเหตุผลที่เลือกแสดงภาพยนตร์แนวนี้ ซึ่งคุณไม่มีโอกาสได้แสดงแม้แต่ครั้งเดียวทางโทรทัศน์ ?

ตอบ - ผมไม่ได้เลือกภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เพราะเป็นแนวชีวิตย้อนยุค เมื่อผมได้อ่านบทเป็นครั้งแรก, มันดึงดูดใจผมมาก และน่าจะเป็นเพราะผู้กำกับการแสดงที่ผมนับถือ ผมคิดว่าไม่มีอะไรน่าลังเลใจ

Q. This move surprises us in various aspects. Not only it is a historical drama, but also you take off glasses which has been like BYJ’s trademark, is going to show bed scenes which you had never shown and took a role of unstoppable playboy, casting off feeling of tender gentleman. What is the reason for such a sudden change?

A. There is no special reason. In the movie, I just wanted to show the look, which I was not able to show on the TV. In that regard, the character “Jo Won” in the was a very much desirable role to me in many aspects. It is to induce people to think-Is there such side of him in BYJ? , So that it would definitely destroy the stereotyped concepts that people have had on me∙∙∙
ถาม - การเคลื่อนไหวครั้งนี้สร้างความแปลกใจกับเราในรูปลักษณ์อย่างมาก, ไม่ใช่เพียงแต่มันจะเป็นภาพยนตร์แนวย้อนยุคโบราณแล้ว แต่คุณยังไม่สวมแว่นตา ซึ่งเหมือนเป็นเครื่องหมายการค้า “เบยองจุน” มีการแสดงฉากบนเตียงซึ่งคุณไม่เคยแสดงมาก่อน และการรับบทเป็นเพลย์บอยผู้ไม่เคยหยุด สลัดอารมณ์ผู้ชายอ่อนโยน อะไรเป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้คุณเปลี่ยนแปลงฉับพลันแบบนี้

ตอบ - ไม่มีเหตุผลพิเศษครับ ในภาพยนตร์ ผมต้องการแสดงผลงานซึ่งผมไม่สามารถแสดงทางโทรทัศน์ ในการพิจารณา บท “โจวอน” ใน “SCANDLE” เป็นบทที่น่าแสดงมากสำหรับผมในทุกๆ รูปแบบ มันทำให้คนพากันคิดว่า เบยองจุนมีอีกด้านหนึ่งซึ่งคนไม่รู้จักหรือเปล่า? สิ่งนั้นจะทำลายคอนเซ็ปท์เกี่ยวกับบุคลิกภาพที่ใครๆคิดว่าผมมีในท้ายที่สุดหรือเปล่า?

The actors, they do not need to make public everything of themselves. However, once they stand in front of the public, they should show their best appearances. Because of that, I tend to stop talking unconsciously during the interviews if I think that I have talked somewhat too much. That means I think that would be enough.
