Director Ronny Yu (于仁泰) is not tired of seeing his seven Yang brothers and he hopes to reunite them again in a future action film.

Pegasus Motion Picture’s big blockbuster war epic, Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>, held a press conference/ premiere in Beijing on the afternoon of March 26. All seven male leads – “Dalang” Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健), “Erlang” Yu Bo (于波), “Sanlang” Vic Chou (周渝民), “Silang” Li Chen (李晨), “Wulang” Raymond Lam (林峯), “Liulang” Wu Chun (吳尊), and “Qilang” Fu Xinbo (付辛博), were all in attendance. The seven Yang brothers’ mother She Taijun, portrayed by acclaimed mainland Chinese actress Xu Fan (徐帆), also graced the press conference along with director Ronny Yu.

The film, which is set to hit in theaters worldwide on April 4, is a retelling of the traditional Chinese folklore Generals of the Yang Family < 楊家將>, a story about the militant Yang clan and their unflinching loyalty to their family and to their country. The film will depict the final years of the seven Yang brothers and their journey to save their father, Yang Linggong (Adam Cheng).

Xu Fan is the Heart of the Movie

Although a male-dominated film, Ronny Yu assured that the female characters in the action epic are all relevant and significant to the story. Xu Fan’s She Taijun is especially, according to Ronny Yu, the heart of it all. “Without her, this film would not have been made,” said Ronny.

The director revealed that Xu Fan was actually the first to be cast in the action epic. “Three years ago, I told [producer] Raymond Wong (黃百鳴) that we must invite Xu Fan. If there is Xu Fan, then we will be able to cast the rest of the actors.”

Xu Fan recalled that her first meeting with Ronny Yu was “not very long, but we chatted for over an hour.” On the actress’ first day on set, Xu Fan’s chemistry with the director clicked immediately, and she felt as if she and Ronny had been very long friends.
Ronny praised, “[Xu Fan] is experienced, professional, and very familiar with the script. Filming Xu Fan is like watching an actual movie.”

A “Modern” Retelling

At the press conference, a new poster for Saving General Yang was unveiled, featuring the seven Yang brothers sporting modern hairstyles but wearing traditional armor, giving off a feeling of stylish avant-garde.

The director stressed that although the film itself is a period drama, he wanted to approach the source material with a modernized retelling. “This is the reason why I wanted all my main stars to be young handsome men. I’ve watched a lot of historical war epics. Now, I think it’s time for the audience to experience a different kind of epic.”

Ronny also revealed that he plans to shoot a big-budget “spiritual sequel” of Saving General Yang. He is currently preparing a modern action film that is “similar to Ocean’s Eleven. It will also feature a group of handsome men, battling out their wits. We plan to go on various jaw-dropping overseas locations to shoot the movie. I really hope that the seven brothers will come together again to film it.”

Among the many films premiering at the 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival, which began on March 17, is the highly anticipated period film Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>. The war movie stars a bevy of popular and good-looking actors, including Taiwanese actor Vic Zhou (周渝民). In a recent interview, Vic shared his views on his public and private image, experiences with horseback riding, and struggles with the film’s final battle scene.

Vic Chou is Yang Sanlang

In Saving General Yang, Vic plays the third son, Yang Sanlang, who is known for being a man of few words, as well as an extremely precise archer. Director Ronny Yu (于仁泰) once said that Vic simply is Sanlang, because the two of them are so similar: many people describe Vic as “melancholy,” and he himself conceded that he is prone to suppressing his emotions. However, Vic added that he actually has a polarized nature: “I’m actually quite childish. I can talk non-stop, and my behavior and actions can be very extreme. There will also be times when I don’t like to talk. Then I will be quiet and enjoy these feelings of solitude.”

Sanlang, whom Vic sees as a wolfish type of character, is a bit different from roles he has portrayed in the past. After rising to popularity as Hua Zelei in the Taiwanese idol drama Meteor Garden <流星花園>, Vic is still the quintessential “pretty boy” to many viewers. In his heart, he understands that retaining this type of image is not his goal. “I don’t want to act those simple, handsome roles,” he shared. “I can’t reshape myself, and I don’t want to use special effects or makeup to change myself. The only thing I could think of was to see if I could stop caring that much about image. To tell the truth, I am privately the type of person who will grow out a beard. Maybe others will think it’s sloppy, but I think doing so is being loyal to myself.”

Physically Draining Role

After being cast in Saving General Yang, Vic first had to learn how to ride a horse. He recalled learning from his riding instructor that horses would not listen when they get moody, and that one should not be too polite when talking with them, otherwise the horses will think they have the upper hand. Vic emphasized building rapport with his war horse and would often chat with it. “I often talk with my pets,” he said. “Even when I see animals at the pet store, I’ll talk to them. When I’m talking to a horse, I will treat it like a small child. The riding instructor told us that a very intelligent horse can have an IQ as high as that of an eight-year-old child, so I respect them a lot. I hope that they will feel my compassion for them, and that they won’t bully a novice like me.”

Although practicing horseback riding was difficult, Vic enjoyed having the opportunity to learn a new skill, which he feels is an advantage to being an actor. “I wouldn’t have learned to ride a horse otherwise, unless I really loved it,” he said. “I’m very happy that because of this film, I was able to start learning horseback riding from the basics.”
Apart from horseback riding, Vic also faced the physical challenge of filming the final battle scene, in which he is engaged in an archery fight amid a cluster of reeds.

Filming the scene took four to five days to complete, and although the reeds look very elegant on screen, Vic shared that they would always scrape his skin and draw blood: “Every time I went into the cluster of reeds and then came out, I would go to one side and pant and rest for a bit. Then I would wipe the bloodstains off my face. When filming that scene, I really forgot where I was. Pain and everything else, I couldn’t feel it.”
Vic was also able to contribute his own suggestions for this final battle scene. “The director asked me if I had any ideas for this scene. I said, ‘I hate, I really hate this person [his opponent].’ If it were me, I would vent out all my emotions in the moment I fire the arrow, and would let out a loud howl.” The director approved of Vic’s idea and included the howl in the final cut.

Acting Promotes Personal Growth

Despite the many difficulties involved in playing Yang Sanlang, Vic felt like the role taught him a lot and challenged his acting skills. “Because of this movie, I now pay more attention to family relationships, as well as the feelings of my family members,” he shared. “I find it very enjoyable when a film or even a character is able to help me change my attitude toward things, especially if it’s a positive change.” In the end, he still finds much pleasure in performing: “Performing is a great thing. As long as are you are willing to put in effort, make sacrifices, and invest energy, then a different pattern will appear.”

Saving General Yang will open in theaters worldwide on April 4, 2013.

LIFE OF LEE:The award from the Visual Effects Society was the latest addition to the critical acclaim for ‘Life of Pi,’ which has grossed US$308 million since its release.

Oscar-winning Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee (李安) received a Visionary Award from the Visual Effects Society (VES) in California on Saturday for his shipwreck epic Life of Pi.

The US-based director “pushed the envelope of creation of visual effects for telling a story. In our generation, only Star Wars did that,” said Jeffrey Okun, chairman of the VES awards committee.

“All the other films in between were like: ‘Here’s a new toy, what can we do with it?’ I don’t think you’ve seen a blend of story and craft as rich as this,” Variety magazine quoted him as saying.

“Ang Lee has used the art of visual effects to masterful effect in telling stories like Life of Pi that could not have otherwise been so powerfully brought to life,” Okun said, according to a separate story on Fxguide, a Web site dedicated to visual effects and post-production information.

“With a body of work that encompasses films as distinguished and artful as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sense and Sensibility and Brokeback Mountain, Lee’s imagery has brought stunning and compelling images to the world of cinema — making us proud to award him our annual Visionary Award,” Okun said.

The award honors individuals for uniquely and consistently using the art and science of visual effects to spark imagination and inspire future discoveries through artistry and groundbreaking invention. Lee accepted the award at the 11th VES ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

His film, a magical realism adaption of the Canadian novelist Yann Martel’s 2002 Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, explores faith through the tale of a shipwrecked boy adrift on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.

The VES award was the latest addition to the considerable critical acclaim Life of Pi has already received.

Last month, the movie was named as one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute and has been nominated for many awards, including the Golden Globes’ best motion picture, best director and best score.

The film has also been a box office success since its release in November last year.

As of Friday, its worldwide earnings had reached US$308 million, including US$90 million in North America and US$20 million in the UK, according to Box Office Mojo.

Ang Lee says 'Life of Pi' more than art house film. Oscar-winning director Ang Lee said he worked hard during the four of shooting on "Life of Pi" to give the $100 million art house film appeal for general audiences.

The movie based on Yann Martel's imaginative book stars Indian Suraj Sharma, who plays a boy who drifts on the open sea with a Bengal tiger and a hyena after a ship carrying the rest of his family sinks.

"As an art house film, you can explore the philosophical issues," Lee said at a news conference Wednesday. "But for a popular film, we also need to make the audience feel touched, and that was the difficult part."

Lee said initial reaction to the film had been positive, leaving him to conclude that his "risky experiment" would be a success.

A major problem in the filming, Lee said, was coping with animals on a roiling sea — a problem Lee solved by filming in 3D.

"As a new technology, 3D gives the film additional appeal," he said.

Much of the film was shot in Taiwan, Lee's home. He said that one of the key settings — a large water tank built at a studio in the central city of Taichung — allowed the 150-strong foreign crew to use its imagination freely and not be restrained by traditional Hollywood production values. "I was relieved that they enjoyed their work in Taiwan. ... We couldn't have made the film if it were not here because of all the help we received," Lee said.

Upside about being Liu Shi Shi this week – she gets to make a movie with Vic Zhou! Okay, the upside totally completely unequivocally outweigh the downside. Shi Shi and Zai Zai! Together! In a romantic movie called 'Season of Love/ 爱的季节'.

Liu Shi Shi is really rolling her way through the leading men of Taiwan, having now worked with Nicky Wu, Ming Dao, Wallace Huo, Peter Ho, Eddie Peng, and now my beloved Zai Zai himself. Rumor has it Roy Qiu is headed back to China to do two more mainland dramas after he wraps Miss Rose, and if Shi Shi get cast in one of those dramas she will have validated why she’s one of my fave C-actresses.

As for 'Season of Love/ 爱的季节', the movie is being filmed in the picturesque city of Pu Er in remote Yunnan province in Southern China, an area that is widely admired as being one of the prettiest scenic regions in the vast Chinese landscape. The story is about a woman from Beijing who travels to Pu Er in Yunnan to research the lost first love of an old Taiwanese grandfather.

She meets Zai Zai’s character, a man visiting from Taipei who turns out to be the grandson of the man whose story she is researching. Together they strive to unearth the truth of a love from the past as well as teaching each other to bravely face their own emotional burdens.

'Season of Love/ 爱的季节' will be filmed in Pu Er, Beijing, and Taiwan.

The 49th Taiwan Golden Horse Award will take place in Yilan Luo Dong Cultural Factory on December 24, the Golden Horse commission announced the first round guest list. Last year's Best Actor Andy Lau Tak Wa, Best Actress Deanie Ip Tak Han and Best New Actor Ko Chen-Tung will appear.

Member of popular Taiwanese girl group S.H.E, Selina Jen talked about her film accident at a radio station's promotional event.

Selina revealed that she has a new nickname after the incident, "fire phoenix", which signifies that she will become a stronger and brand new self after her injury.

The singer also commended her co-star, Ham Yu's bravery for returning to the scene of the accident. Ham suffered severe burns previously but has gradually recovered.

Show Luo has just released his 9th Album, “Good Show” and his new online mini film series “Heartbeat Love” will start its broadcast on April 12.Rainie Yang,his co-star in Hi My Sweetheart, is the female lead in the music love story.

The plot follows Show and Rainie as two strangers who end up sharing a hotel room during their trip to Australia thanks to a prank Show’s friends decided to play on him. A mix-up of Show’s luggage results in Rainie mistaking him for being gay, and in one scene, she takes off her towel in front of him to put lotion on her back.



Rainie gave up her first on-screen nude shot from the back to this production, and mentioned afterward that the filming of that scene was even more awkward than kissing scenes. Show promised to make it up to her by appearing as her guest in many of her future concerts.

Show and Rainie spent three weeks in Australia, filming in three states across the country (Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania) on a budget of $20 million NTD ($677,240 USD). The majority of the funding came from Tourism Australia, who chose Show and Rainie to film the mini film series as promotion of Australian tourism to the Chinese market.

They were chosen for their individual popularity as well as for the incredible chemistry they showed onscreen in Hi My Sweetheart, making them a favourite with fans. The spark they show onscreen when working together was again ignited when filming a bed scene, in which they ruffle up their hair and clothes and pull faces at the camera, going for a comedic effect, rather than the conventional romantic bed scenes.

Taiwanese starlet Ella Chen got more than she bargained for in her new movie, Bad Girls.

Ella who had a number of action scenes in the movie, had insisted on not using a stunt double, to make it look more realistic. However, she broke down and cried when she had to endure grueling practice sessions before the actual shoot.

When asked if she felt that the scenes were too tough for her, Ella replied with a smile, "I don't have a choice, I had a higher payout."

When the movie premiered two days ago in Taiwan, Ella's band mates, Selina Jen and Hebe Tien, sent video messages to congratulate her, moving her to tears. Hebe complimented Ella for having good acting skills, while Selina hoped that the movie will be a box office success.

Ella's kissing scenes with co-star Mike He were also the focus of media attention, since Ella will be marrying her Malaysian fiancé Alvin Lai in May.

Mike expressed that he is not afraid that Alvin would be jealous, because they "kind of know each other", to which Ella retorted, "Who's close to you?"

The official drama poster for the drama "(爱情闯进) When Love Walked In" starring Fahrenheit member Calvin Chen, f(x) member Victoria Song, Super Junior-M member Zhou Mi and Taiwanese actor Shao Xiang has been released through the drama's official weibo.

"When Love Walked In" is Syndication's main "romance drama" production of 2012, following the standards made by "(夏家三千金) My Daughter" and "(爱情睡醒了) Waking Love Up". The drama tells the story of how Qin Yu Jiang (played by Calvin Chen) was under orders to look for the chairman's long-lost granddaughter, which he found to be Shen Ya Yin (played by Victoria Song) who is treated like Cinderella in her aunt's home. And what happens next is a romantic love story that makes people laugh and cry.

In 2007, Jay Chou made is debut as a director in the critically acclaimed movie “Secret”. Five years later, the singer has begun work on a follow-up to the movie.

The new film is tentatively titled “Secret 2″. The film will be done through the new company recently started by Jay Chou and Will Liu.

The two have finished the first test screening for the movie. This was completed over a period of 14 days. With the first phase of pre-production done and the script already written, the two will be visiting 6 acting school across Taiwan to begin the casting process for the movie.



Last week, Will went to Shanghai to scope out potential locations for the filming of the new movie. However, Jay has stated that he wants to the movie to be filmed in Taiwan to show the country’s natural beauty.

Despite all the work needed to be done for the upcoming movie, the two took a break yesterday to unwind and relax with friends. They invited their good friends William and A-Wei of Lollipop F as well as Xiao Mei and others to play basketball and badminton with them.

Jay Chou and Xiao Mei were teammates for a game of basketball. Because Xiao Mei couldn’t hit any baskets, the two lost and had to do 10 pushups for losing.

Taiwanese movie Love had its first taste of success when it was selected for the Berlin Film Festival recently. The movie has not been released in cinemas.

This is movie director Doze Niu's second feature film to make it into the festival after his 2010 movie Monga.

When told of the good news, the director excitedly said, "I'm very happy that Love is selected for the Berlin Film Festival, because it's a commercial film that talks about love. I really feel that heaven has been good to me, and I'm grateful to the cast and crew for their hard work."

Doze later informed the cast the good news via his microblog.

Actor Eddie Peng replied happily, "Good omen in the year 2012. [I'm] setting off the firecrackers."

Shu Qi also wrote, "Awesome."

While the production team is doing their best to coordinate everyone's schedule, only Mark Chao has confirmed that he will attend the festival on Feb 16.

Ethan is due for military enlistment next month. If he does attend, the Berlin Film Festival will be his last event before entering the army.

Love is scheduled to open in cinemas in Taiwan on Feb 10, and four days later in China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Cast members are expected to begin promotion of the movie abroad for a week, beginning Feb 9, before flying straight to Berlin for the film festival.

Movie “Perfect Two” will be released during Lunar New Year in Taiwan on January 20, 2012 and in Mainland China on January 23, 2012. Directed by Chu Yan-Ping, starring Vic Chou, Xiaoxiao Bin, Ella Chen Jiahua and Yang Mi, the film recently revealed the first Official Trailer and a series of father-and-son posters.

This movie is Director Chu’s return to comedy, a completely new creation of his 1984 masterpiece of a heart-warming family comedy. The entire film revolves around the father-and-son story of Vic Chou and Xiaoxiao Bin, following the unfolding of their warm-hearted relationship.

This is Zai Zai’s first film role as a father, together with the child actor Xiaoxiao Bin and actress Yang Mi, they will make up a family of three. Ella plays Ma-Niu who secretly has feelings for Vic Chou. In addition, the director also invited Ding Sha-sha who became famous online as the “out-of-control girl”, Tao Zhe Ru, Vivian Hsu, Tang Zhong Sheng and Zhu Ge Liang to participate as guests stars.

In the trailer and posters, Xiaoxiao Bin and Zai Zai have a lot of scenes together, from concealing their true identity as father and son, to the revelation of their identities and the final parting. The holiday movie season in Asia is on a different schedule than the US. Naturally. Big-budget movies come out in early October to hit the National holiday in China, and then around late January and early February for the Lunar New Year.

As the year winds down, most of the blockbuster C-movies have already been released, with a few biding its time for a December premiere for the Christmas season. One movie looks particularly cute to me, the Bakmin (Raymond) Wong produced 'Magic to Win' (開心魔法), which looks and sounds like an Asian inspired Harry Potter crossed with The Sorceror’s Apprentice.

The movie stars Bakmin himself, Wu Zun, Louis Koo, Wu Jing, Tonny Jan, Yan Li, and introducing a brand new fresh-faced leading lady Karena Ng to the acting world. Bakmin has compared her to Angelababy, which to me is not a comparison any starlet ought to aspire to. Have a look at some movie stills and the just released English-subbed teaser below. This would be the perfect movie to watch on a flight.



Newbie actress Karena Ng definitely looks promising from the stills alone. She has the “it” factor without looking bitchy and slightly full of herself. Looks-wise she reminds me of a young Anita Yuen.

Apparently the movie is about Karena’s character discovering she possesses magic powers, and she finds herself part of the magic world she never knew existed, and joins forces with the men to win a worldwide magic competition. Think God of Gamblers except with magic instead of black jack. When done right, HK movies can do these competition movies like no other.
