“Moonlight Express,” one of the most beloved films starring late Hong Kong star Leslie Cheung, is to be remade by a Korean film studio.

On April 1, the 10th anniversary of Cheung’s death, Korean film studio Jackie said that they had finalized arrangements for the remake deal with the film’s original producing firm Mei Ah Entertainment Group.

“It would be the biggest pleasure for his fans who are commemorating the tenth anniversary of hisdeath. Although he’s not here anymore, we’ll bring another memory to them,” officials from Jackie said, adding that the remake film would be released across Asia.

Made in 1999 by director Daniel Lee Yan-Gong, the joint production of Hong Kong and Japan starred Asia's superstar Cheung and Japanese actress Takako Tokiwa and opened in all parts of Asia.

“Moonlight Express” is a tale about a woman who falls in love with a man who looks exactly like her old lover who died in an accident.

Ju Jin Mo will be returning to the big screen with director Kwak Kyung Taek.

According to the actor′s agency Fantagio on March 27, Ju Jin Mo has confirmed he will be appearing in Friend 2. He will be appearing as Lee Joon Seok (Yoo Oh Sung)′s father Lee Chul Ju, who was a charismatic man of the town in the 1960s.

Ju Jin Mo commented, "I′m happy I′ll be joining the sequel to Friend. Friend 2  isn′t a film about mere bullies; it contains characters with their own pathos. It′s my first time working with director Kwak Kyung Taek in six years. I′ll work hard to show what being manly is all about on screen, so you can look forward to it."

Friend 2  is set in both 1963 and 2013, and is about men who represent each period. Yoo Oh Sung, the lead of the first film, and Kim Woo Bin have been confirmed for the film. It will start filming in April.

'Top Star' has Tae-Sik (Uhm Tae-Woong) beginning his career in the entertainment world as the manager for top star Won-Joon (Kim Min-Jun). Tae-Sik then becomes a top star himself and rivalry ensues between the two men.Meanwhile, beautiful producer Mi-Na (So Yi-hyun) fuels the men's rivalry.

Actor Park Joong-Hoon makes his directorial debut with "Top Star.' Like mentioned before, this movie is produced by veteran actor Park Joong Hoon. The actor has been in more 20 movies, but he has never appeared in a drama before. He also has ventured into MCing, when he hosted his own show in 2009.

No word on when the movie will start filming or when it will premiere.

He went from teen star to top actor to world star. Throughout his career, Lee Byung Hun has seen a steady line of ever-expanding titles get attached to his name, and he has returned with another jaw-dropping transformation with the film G.I. Joe 2.

Even those who weren′t his fans before will have to admit that he does indeed stand out, and the increasing importance of his role proves that they′re not mistaken.

"A lot of people say I′ve managed to step up to a higher status, and though my life hasn′t changed drastically, it is true I′m being treated differently. I′m proud that the film will be premiering first in Korea. I′m also pressured because I have to be the host; I followed everyone around in Hollywood but now I have to lead. I looked over every detail to leave a good impression of Korea on these people."

The first thing he taught his G.I. Joe 2 team, however, turned out to be how to drink mixed drinks. He said he had a reason he had to teach them this first.

"I met with director Jon Chu after 10 p.m. I couldn′t take him to Namsan Tower, and all we could do with so many people after 10 p.m. was to grab some drinks. I wasn′t aiming to teach them about mixed drinks; it just happened. (Laugh)"

Now he can get drinks when he wants, but while he was filming the movie he had to endure a hardcore diet for his perfect six pack. He shook his head thinking about how he couldn′t eat anything he wanted at the time.

"I missed Korean food so much, though even if I had been in Korea I wouldn′t have been able to eat anything. I was only able to eat after I had finished filming scenes where I had to take my shirt off. There was one Korean food restaurant but I only went there after I finished working on that scene. The food gave me a hard time, but I also missed my mother because I had never lived away from my family beofre. She had to come in the end. She cooked Korean foods like galbi and kimchijjigae for me because I had finished filming my shirtless scenes. (Laugh)"

His mother′s cooking wasn′t the only thing that kept him going. The two directors Park Chan Wook and Kim Ji Woon also helped him through the friendship they had shared in previous pieces. The two directors had been preparing their own pieces in Hollywood.

"Once, my filming schedule matched up with director Park Chan Wook and Kim Ji Woon′s. They both said through phone calls or text messages that America and Korea gave different kinds of authority to the director. They both said they wanted to go back. (Laugh) Sometimes we would complain to each other over the phone, and after we finished shooting we met up in L.A. We talked about our woes over coffee. I thought it would have been great if we had been together as actor and director, because that would have caused a nice synergy effect. Since our conditions are improving, soon I guess we′ll get a chance to do so."

The best part about his recent film was that he was able to act maskless. While the Storm Shadow of the previous installment was a figure from fantasy, giving off a sort of dark charisma, this time he became an unmasked human being.

"I felt that Storm Shadow had lived a stifling life ever since he was framed. I felt a release when I read the new scenario. I was touched by the way he took care of his misunderstandings and exploded with emotion. The staff were all surprised when I took the emotions in a Korean way, but later on they applauded me, saying it was a unique interpretation. Director Jon Chu and the producer were very satisfied. In the first film he was always cynical and evil, but in the second he became a burning figure. I thought I would stand out when every other actor is taking things lightly for the popcorn movie, but I′m satisfied. (Laugh)"

His name used to be fifth in line on the ending credits, and this time it′s in the third spot. Though he managed this feat alone, he still seemed to retain his modesty.

"I don′t know if the public thinks I′ve cleared a spot for myself in Hollywood, but I haven′t. My ventures are still in the beginning stages. I don′t know how far I can go with my own skills. I keep thinking, how long will this opportunity last? I don′t know if I′ll be limited to roles that flash six packs and high kicks or whether I′ll be able to take on roles that could be given to other Americans. Nothing is for certain, and I′m still curious as to how this will turn out

So, there’s more information out on Cha Seung-won’s new cop action comedy with director Jang Jin, and get this: he plays a dude who wants to be a lady. Oh man, that is NOT what I expected, even with the title High Heels.

Though Cha Seung-won the actor will be in drag, the story itself is no mere undercover-cop-in-drag setup he’ll be a transgender hero who undergoes the transformation throughout the course of the film. Jang Jin is known for his subversive humor.


Esom (Psychometry, White Christmas) and Oh Jung-sae (Men: An Operating Manual, I Miss You) have joined the cast, and I initially assumed Esom would play Cha Seung-won’s love interest.

Oh Jung-sae’s character is described as a rival (it’s broad so he could be a rival cop or a criminal or maybe he’s even a rival for whoever gets cast as the love interest?) while Esom’s character is the one who helps the hero become a woman.

Cha Seung-won stars as a cop in the violent crimes division, which in itself is a funny backdrop for the story. Can you just imagine the reaction in the precinct?

And to top it off, it’s an action comedy, so she/he will at some point be solving homicides and running after killers in those heels.

Do they even make shoes like that in his size? And what are they going to do with his facial hair? And his tattoo?

High Heels starts shooting in April for a release later this year.

Cho Min-soo, the heroine of Venice Golden Lion winner "Pieta," was named most popular actress at the Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong on Monday.

Cho appeared in a sophisticated black dress to receive the People's Choice Award for Favorite Actress.

Kim Go-eun, who played the heroine in "A Muse," walked down the red carpet as a presenter, and Lou Ye's "Mystery" was named best film.

Organizers fo the 15th Seoul International Youth Film Festival [SIYFF] has confirmed that this year's event will be held for 8 days from August 22 to 29, a day longer than last year's event.

Last year's SIYFF saw 90% of all seats filled. The festival organizers say this year's edition will have a new short film section called "Competition 9+" which will screen films made by children aged 9 to 12 with the aim of fostering cinematic dreams in children.

Meanwhile, SYIFF will accept applications from children who wish to take part at the Giffoni Children's Film Festival in Italy, the oldest children's film festival in the world.

From July 18 until 29, children from Korea and other parts of Asia can apply to take part at the event in Giffoni. The Giffoni Film Festival invites young people from Korea and the rest of Asia through SIYFF.

The selected children will stay with Italian families and take part at the Giffoni event serving as members of the youth jury at the prestigious film festival.

A museum devoted to highlighting the cinematic world of Korean director Im Kwon-taek is to open in Haeundae, Busan.

Dongseo University announced that it will open the Im Kwontaek Museum in its Centum Campus in Haeundae.

The museum will be on the second floor of the university's Centum Campus building, taking up some 340㎡. It will consist of six different spaces focusing on different phases in director Im's career from the 1960's to the present.

The different phases highlighted will be his childhood, youth, the beginning of his directorial career and the period where he started making films based on his unique world view.

The period when Im started having success with "Son of the General" and "Sopyonje" and the period in the 21st Century when he inspired many around the world through his life and films will also be highlighted.

There will also be a special exhibit area which will hold temporary exhibitions under different themes on a seasonal basis. In the permanent section, posters, footage of Im's films, still photography as well as other film-related materials will be on display so that visitors can gain an insight into Im's films and views on the world.

There will also be original scripts of Im's films, original novels on which some of his films were based as well as press cutting s related to his films.

Film sets of "Son of the General" as well as "Chihwaseon", winner the Best Director's Award at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2002 will also make up a part of the museum.

Famed Korean director Lee Chang-dong is to devote his passion and experience to training young Asian film talents.

The novelist-turned-director has been appointed dean of Asian Film Academy [AFA] 2013, a subsidiary film education program of Busan International Film Festival [BIFF], the festival said on March 18.

Lee marks himself as the second Korean director to take the honorable position, following film maestro Im Kwon-taek of “Surrogate Mother” and “Chihawseon.”

Speaing to TenAsia English, Lee spoke of his joy at the invitation to lead this year's AFA, "it's a big responsibility to foster the cinematic talents of Asia, as they will be the future leaders of Asian cinema. I'm also very excited at the thought of meeting every single one of the attendees."

When Lee Chang-dong gave a lecture about his artistic journey at a master class in AFA 2011, it proved to be a great hit with the venue becoming completely full with many being refused entry.

In addition, Thai independent filmmaker Aditya Assarat will serve as the directing mentor of AFA 2013. Assarat’s “Wonderful Town” won the New Currents Award at the 2007 BIFF.

AFA is an intensive cinema education program for international would-be filmmakers, providing critique on short film production, workshops, a master class, special lecture series, and mentoring.

Co-hosted by Dongseo University, Busan Film Commission and BIFF, the 9th AFA will run for 18 days from September 26 to October 13 this year. The call for fellowship applications closes on April 30.

Lee Chang-dong, undoubtedly one of the most highlighted filmmakers in Korean Cinema, made his directorial debut with “Green Fish” in 1997 after giving up his previous occupation as a novelist and a high school teacher.

His second feature film “Peppermint Candy,” the opening film of the 4th Busan International Film Festival, was widely acclaimed by both critics and audiences. He was invited to the 59th Venice International Film Festival Best Director with his next film, “Oasis.”

Actress Jeon Do-yeon, a desperate widow in Lee’s fourth feature “Secret Sunshine,” was honored to be the first Korean actress to win Best Actress at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

“Poetry,” Lee’s most recent work in 2010 and the winnr of the Best Screenplay at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, has earned international success after it was sold to some 20 countries including the United States, Canada, the U.K., Hong Kong, Spain, Russia and Brazil.

The film, about an elderly woman who deals with problems at home and with her Alzheimer`s disease by writing poems, was also named as one of the best movies of 2011 by CNN as well as various other online movie websites.

The Gift of Room 7 is all set to blow through Asia.

NEW, the film′s distribution company, announced on March 18 that "The Gift of Room 7 has been exported to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and other Asian countries."

Comstock Group purchased the distribution rights for Japan, Intercontinental Films Distributors will be in charge of Hong Kong and Macao, JoyNContents took over the rights for Thailand and Flash Forward Entertainment will be distributing the film in Taiwan.

The Gift of Room 7 was first showcased overseas in February at the Berlin International Film Festival.

A rep from NEW said, "Flash Forward Entertainment rep Patrick Mao Huang said the film was very touching, and that it was like I Am Sam, Green Mile and Life Is Beautiful all in one. He said that he feels Taiwanese audiences will also be touched by the father-child relationship in the film and the plans of the ′Room 7 Family.′"

International Films Distributors, which previously took Architecture 101 and Love Fiction to Hong Kong, decided to purchase rights for the film after an unanimous agreement by the marketing team following a company preview.

The Gift of Room 7 has been screening in L.A. since March 8, and more countries such as Australia, China, Singapore and Malaysia have shown interest in the film.

The film premiered in Korea on January 23, and has since gathered a 12,500,000 audience.

Upcoming Korean film “Mr. Go,” produced in full 3D for the first time in Korean film history, is to bring an unusual sense of excitement this summer.

The film’s investor and local distributor Showbox unveiled the teaser poster on March 15, impressing local moviegoers with its main character Ling Ling, a baseball playing gorilla holding a baseball.

In the poster, Ling Ling represents a vivid image of the huge and hairy creature, made 100% with Korean technology. The realistic image is enough to convince us its slogan, “Imagination becomes reality” [translated phrase].

Helmed by director Kim Yong-hwa of the box office hits “200 Pounds Beauty” and “Take Off,” the movie depicts Ling Ling and his 13-year-old manager Wei Wei [Xu Jiao of "CJ7"] joining a Korean professional baseball team and becoming a superstar with the help of an agent Seong Chung-soo [Seong Dong-il].

Inspired by cartoonist Heo Young-man’s popular comic “The 7th Club,” the sports drama pic is to open at Korean theaters this July. Then they plan to head overseas including to 5,000 Chinese screens, thanks to its partnership wth a major Chinese distributor, Huayi Brothers.

Upcoming SBS TV Wed-Thu drama ‘All About My Date’ is set to make its debut, and the production team has released photos from lead actress Lee Min Jung’s first filming scene.

The photos were taken at the film set during filming earlier this month. In one of the photos, Lee Min Jung is seen analysing her script intently, while another sees her acting out her scene with all her energy. Although the weather was chilly on the day of filming, the beauty of Lee Min Jung was able to shine brightly at the film set.

Lee Min Jung plays the role of No Min Young who is a rookie assemblywoman and 1 of two Progressive Labour Party (of which she heads) members in the national assembly. No Min Young had never harboured any thoughts about politics until the passing of her elder sister who was a Progressive Labour Party member and a potential candidate for president.

She decides to enter the political world after her sister’s death, and steps into a political world that she had never had any thoughts about it before. With her status as an assemblywoman from the Progressive Labour Party, she fights daily over big and small issues with the other big political parties that wield more authority and power.

Min Young’s political career isn’t smooth sailing, but she is able to bring some consolation to people in need of help and finds some achievement, believing that this political path is the right one for her.

With regards to digesting the numerous political jargons in her script, Lee Min Jung said, “I have to recite lines that I normally wouldn’t say, regarding politics and law, so I am not really fluent with it when I deliver the lines. I have to be more careful with how I enunciate the words, and have prepared myself sufficiently for it.”

Director Son Jung Hyun said, “This is a role that was tailor-made for her (Lee Min Jung). She has rediscovered her own charms while also enjoying filming the drama at the same time. Please wait in anticipation for Lee Min Jung’s transformation,” showing his satisfaction with Lee Min Jung’s acting.

‘All About My Date’ features a cast that include Lee Min Jung, Shin Ha Kyun, Park Hee Soon, Gong Hyung Jin, and many others. It revolves around a male assemblyman and female assemblywoman who hail from two different political parties with different political ideals, but they still fall in love with other. The drama is written by Kwon Ki Young who previously wrote for ‘Protect The Boss’ while directing the drama will be Son Jung Hyun. The drama will succeed ‘That Winter, The Wind Blows’ and begin broadcast next month.

Meanwhile, Lee Byung Hun was a guest on the March 11th episode of SBS TV ‘Healing Camp’, where he revealed that he had decided to guest on the show, upon recommendation from his girlfriend, Lee Min Jung.

Spy film "The Berlin File," directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, has so far attracted more than seven million viewers since its release on Jan. 30, a first for a domestic movie in the genre.

It moved beyond "The Man from Nowhere" (2010) and "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" (2008), which lured 6.28 million and 6.68 million cinemagoers, respectively.

"The figure shows that the film was loved by all age groups and both genders despite earlier concerns about the complicated plot and narrative," said a spokesman at CJ Entertainment, the distributor of "The Berlin File."

“The Greatest Love” star ChaSeung-won is to return to the big screen with renowned director Jang Jin.

The model-turned-actor has confirmed to take lead in the new film “High Heels” [working title], the film’s distributor Lotte Entertainment said on March 6.

The 41-year-old actor is to depict a police detective in the film which marks his comeback to the big screen in three years after “71-Into the Fire.”

The actor-director pair have worked together in several film projects such as the 2005’s black comedy “The Big Scene” and 2007’s heartsick drama “My Son.”

Set to start shooting in April, the comic action movie is aiming for a release in the second half of 2013.

Cha made his debut as a model before his first role in the 1997 SBS sitcom "New York Story" and shot to stardom with a slew of hits of his comedy films "Kick the Moon,” “Break Out,” “Jail Breakers” and “Teacher Kim Bong-du” in early 2000s.

After building his presence as a comic actor, he started to build a wider range of filmography by taking more serious roles in "Blood Rain," “Over the Border,” “Eye for an Eye” and “Blades of Blood.”

His latest TV appearances include SBS romcom "City Hall,” SBS blockbuster "Athena" and MBC romantic drama “The Greatest Love,” one of the most-watched TV series in 2011.

Most recently, he starred in veteran Japanese play director Jung Eui-Shin’s new work, “Bring Me My Chariot of Fire,” co-starring famed Japanese actors Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, Hirosue Ryoko and Kagawa Teruyuki.

The first trailer for the much-anticipated film ‘The Huntresses‘ (formerly known as ‘The Joseon Beautiful Three Musketeers‘), starring actresses Ha Ji Won, Kang Ye Won, and Ga In, has finally made its online debut.

On February 26, the VIP premiere of “Psychometry” was held at the CGV theaters in Wangshipri, Seoul. A dazzling wave of celebrities stepped on the red carpet and posed in front of the cameras to show support for their friends in the film. Eyes were especially drawn to the fact that many beautiful female celebrities attended to support the film.

Celebrities who attended the event include Park Min Young, Jung Eun Ji, Go Ara, Kim So Eun, Jo Yeo Jung, Lee Yoon Ji, Han Ji Min, Han Hye Jin, Jung Il Woo, Choi Philip, Lee Chung Ah, Lee Kwang Soo, Yoon Jin Yi and more.

“Psychometry” is about a detective (Kim Kang Woo) who tries to hunt down a serial child kidnapper and a witness (Kim Bum) who possesses a supernatural ability called psychometry. The film is expected to hit theaters on March 7.

The Taiwanese-born director bagged four awards for fantasy movie “Life of Pi” at the annual film ceremony and thanked his family for their utmost support. 

Ang Lee became the talk of the town after he received four major awards at the prestigious 85th Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) for fantasy movie, Life of Pi yesterday (Singapore time). He won the Best Director, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Vocal Score awards.

As the first Asian to clinch the Best Director award twice at the Oscars (Lee received his first award for Brokeback Mountain in 2005), the 58-year-old Taiwanese shared his heartfelt joy onstage after the results were announced.

Besides expressing his gratitude to Life of Pi's production crew, Lee also thanked his beloved wife and family, commenting, "I love you, my family in Taiwan. My wife, Jane Lin, we'll be married 30 years this summer. I love you. My boys, Han and Mason, thank you for your support."

Jane, who accompanied her husband to the ceremony, beamed with delight and blushed upon Lee's public declaration of love.

On the other hand, Lee's mother and younger brother in Taiwan reportedly shed tears of joy as soon as the results were revealed.

According to the media, Mrs Lee also praised Jane for being a "thoughtful wife and daughter-in-law". Jane is known for maintaining a low-key profile and is highly supportive of Lee's dream of becoming a filmmaker. She never gave up on her husband and was willing to be the sole breadwinner as a biologist for six years during the 1980s to help realise Lee's ambition.

Korean crime movie “New World” has become the new winner atop the weekend box office, while “Miracle in Cell No. 7” became the first Korean comic drama to reach the 10 million moviegoers milestone.

The noir action pic dominated the local box office after drawing in 860,754 cinemagoers on its opening weekend of February 22 to 24, Korean Box Office information System [KOBIS] showed Monday.

Starring big name stars Lee Jung-jae, Choi Min-sik and Hwang Jung-min, director Park Hoon-jung’s second film is being well-received by local film lovers thanks to the thrilling ensemble of the threesome and a story full of suspense.

Despite the emergence of the new box office hit, Korean comic drama “Miracle in Cell No. 7” had no trouble getting its 10 millionth moviegoer on February 23 and sat at No. 2 after pulling in 855,942 in admissions in the same time frame.

With a relatively small production budget of 5.8 billion Korean Won [approximately 5.3 million U.S. Dollars], the tale of a father and daughter in jail became the 8th Korean film to achieve the overwhelming record, becoming the first 10-million-admissions film for the mid-sized distribution firm NEW.

While “The Berlin File,” the Korean action flick by director Ryoo Seung-wan, slid down to No. 3 with 303,727 admissions, the new mystery thriller “An Ethics Lesson,” starring Lee Je-hoon, Cho Jin-woong and Moon So-ri, made its debut reaching the fourth spot after attracting 104,494 cinemagoers.
 
“Delhi Safari,” a 3D animated movie from India, rounded off the top five after posting 90,837 admissions last weekend.

Other movies which amused local moviegoers last weekend were Jeremy Renner’s new actioner “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” Korean romcom “How to Use Guys with Secret Tips,” U.S. action franchise “A Good Day to Die Hard,” director Kim Ji-woon’s foray to Hollywood “The Last Stand” and Danish animation “Marco Marco.”
