On the night of December 29th, Siwon tweeted, “Again yesterday, the word ’slave-contract’ climbed to the surface .. Korean actor Kang Ji-hwan was voted actor of the year in an annual TV survey in Japan, according to his agency S-Plus Entertainment on Wednesday.

A press release by S-Plus said that in an annual poll conducted from December 2 to 20 by INNOLIFE, an online news provider of Hallyu contents in Japan, Kang took 55.4 percent of the votes in a poll on a total 2,662 people to be named favorite Korean actor.

Other Korean actors that appeared on the poll were Jang Keun-suk who came second with 30.4 percent of the votes, followed by Lee Seung-ki with 5.3 percent, Kim Nam-gil 3.9 percent, Jang Hyuk 2.6 percent, Chun Jung-myung 1.7 percent and Ji Jin-hee 0.9 percent.



In the drama section, Kang-starrer "Coffee House (2009)" also topped the chart with 48.6 percent of the votes, followed by "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" which collected 40 percent of the votes, "Bad Guy" 2.8 percent, "Cinderella's Sister" 2.6 percent, "Dong Yi" 2.5 percent and "The Slave Hunters" 2.3 percent.

"Coffee House", which went on air in Korea last year, was lauded for its unique story structure that embraced elements of both drama and sitcom. The drama went into air in Japan in late October.

Kang made his debut in the entertainment industry through the musical "Rocky Horror Show" in 2001 and has since appeared on the small and big screen with his roles in "Be Strong, Geum-Soon!" (MBC, 2005), "Hong Gil-dong, the Hero" (KBS2, 2008) and "My Girlfriend is an Agent" (2009).

He is currently the producer of musical "Cafe In" in Tokyo in which he also plays the lead role.

The Korean adaptation of the Japanese comic "City Hunter", starring Lee Min-ho, will premiere in May 2010.

An official from his agency Starhaus Entertainment told 10Asia over the phone Wednesday, "It has been confirmed that the first episode of 'City Hunter' will air on May 25 next year".

"City Hunter", originally a Japanese manga series by Tsukasa Hojo, is about a private detective named Ryo Saeba who works to get of crime in the city of Tokyo during the latter half of the 1980s.



In September, the show's PR firm announced that the 23-year-old heartthrob will be playing the role of Ryo Saeba in the Korean drama version which will take place in present time Seoul, making it the first time for the Japanese comic to be turned into a drama.

Lee first appeared in various TV and short dramas in 2006 and rose to stardom in Korea and throughout Asia after starring in KBS' hit TV series "Boys over Flowers" alongside Koo Hye-seon and Kim Hyun-joong.

His last small screen role was in March where he pretended to be a homosexual man in MBC's "Personal Taste" opposite Korean actress Son Ye-jin.

SBS' series "ATHENA" came on top of the Monday and Tuesday prime time slot, according to surveys by two media research firms on Wednesday.

Data by Total National Media Statistics (TNmS) and AGB Nielsen Media Research revealed that "ATHENA", a spin-off to KBS' blockbuster hit series "IRIS", posted average viewership ratings of 18.8 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively, both dropping by one percent compared to a week ago.

"ATHENA", starring actors Jeong Woo-seong, Soo-ae, Cha Seung-won and Lee Ji-ah, deals with world of spies amid competition to secure nuclear technology among governments.

Coming in second place was MBC's TV series "Queen of Reversals", scoring an average rating of 12.8 percent on TNmS' chart and 15.1 percent on AGB's poll.

"Queen of Reversals", starring Kim Nam-joo, Jeong Joon-ho and Park Si-hoo, which tells the story of the joys and struggles in the workplace, has shown signs of gaining on front-runner "ATHENA" since last week.

Meanwhile, KBS' drama "Marry Me, Mary!", starring Moon Geun-yeong, Jang Geun-seok and Kim Jae-wook, finished its run this week at No. 3, with average ratings of 5.9 percent on TNmS' survey while data from AGB revealed slightly higher ratings of 6.3 percent.

"Marry Me, Mary!", about a girl caught up in a double contractual marriage, ended with a happy ending with Mary (played by Moon Geun Young) reuniting with Mugyul (played by Jang Geun Suk) after agreeing with Jung-in (played by Kim) that they would not to marry each other for the sake of their fathers.

The musical drama "Dream High", featuring the star-studded cast of actor Kim Soo-hyeon-I, 2PM members Taecyeon and Wooyoung, miss A's Suzy and T-ara member Ham Eun-jeong, will go on air after "Marry Me, Mary!" starting next week.

But this ending was hiding a huge secret. That is Jang Keun Suk made a great contribution to the ending of MMM Ep.16. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that Ep.16 is written by Jang Keun Suk.

Jang Keun Suk revealed, “The shooting of Ep.16 started two days before MMM broadcast and the last episode didn’t have enough time to tell the whole story. I always kept thinking ‘how to act it out well? Can I do so?’ Also have to show a little different side of Mary and Mu Gyul from the previous time. ”

From what Jang Keun Suk said, in the last episode of MMM, Mu Gyul was supposed to be dumped by Mary, and then cried in his mom’s arms. Because of Jang Keun Suk, Mary made a 180°shift.

What well worth seeing was that Mu Gyul wore all the same clothes at the END of EP16 as EP1. In order to give a feeling of freshness to the audiences, not only the clothes but the same accessories appeared on the screen again. To the audiences it seemed to play a finding fault games.

Mu Gyul suffered a lot all along his way. Once again coming back to shoot at Hongdae, when there was 10 hours before MMM broadcast., Jang Keun Suk suddenly proposed his changes. Before playing in MMM, he often suggested to the director, “Let's do it like this”, which showed him an ambitious actor.

Jang Keun Suk’s active participation was totally out of his ambition and affection to this character. According to this work, a condition of the negative evaluations or the falling watching ratings surely would cause to lose enthusiasm in the stand as an actor. One drama has bowed out of the Monday-Tuesday ratings race with its Tuesday finale, KBS’s 'Mary Stayed Out All Nigh't, the rom-com that hasn’t been very rommy OR commy lately. It went out with a 7.3% rating, which is a tick upward from its Episode 15 number, 5.9%.



On the other stations, numbers were higher as 'Athena: Goddess of War' brought in an 18.6%, up from its Monday numbers of 17.6%. Despite maintaining its lead, however, its numbers have been slipping from its strong premiere (22.8%), and the third show in the lineup, Queen of Reversals, is actually closing in. Its latest episode recorded a 16.6% — with twelve more episodes ordered, one wonders whether it’ll be able to seriously challenge the spy thriller for supremacy.

MBC has one Wednesday-Thursday drama called My Princess coming up, and now it’s got a second Wednesday-Thursday show called Royal Family that’s in the works. Well, I suppose these things DO tend to come in pairs, for whatever inexplicable cosmic reason. (Daemul and President, What’s Up and Dream High, Cinderella Man and Style…)

In contrast to My Princess, though it appears that Royal Family won’t be about literal royalty, but a more figurative kind; the story unfolds as a woman overcomes various struggles to become a prominent chaebol. The woman is involved with a younger man whom she supports and who eventually becomes a lawyer, and the relationship turns into a “dangerous love.”

(A chaebol, as you may already know from numerous Korean dramas, particularly if you’ve seen one of the Cinderella variety, is a business tycoon who builds up a corporate dynasty of sorts, wherein successorship is kept in the family. It’s for that inherited-riches facet that second-generation chaebols — the younger generations — are a favorite type of kdrama hero.)

Cast as the male lead is Ji Sung, who most recently played the titular king of MBC’s historical drama Kim Suro, and a year before that acted in SBS’s business/revenge/thriller drama Swallow the Sun (from which the above photo comes).

The female lead role has yet to be confirmed, but the name making the rounds as the most likely contender is Lee Mi-yeon (below), who recently played another type of successful businesswoman in the period drama Merchant Kim Man-deok.

Royal Family will be the drama to follow My Princess, the latter of which airs next week.

Officers-at-sea drama Poseidon has secured a place on SBS’s 2011 schedule, and will be coming to us as a Monday-Tuesday drama sometime in May. An SBS rep confirmed the news on the 28th, and although the drama doesn’t have a specific premiere date yet, that’ll probably depend on the broadcast runs of its predecessor shows.



Those would be SBS’s current Monday-Tuesday action show Athena: Goddess of War, to be followed by Lee Min-jung and Jang Hyuk’s stocks- and business-related drama Midas. The latter is tentatively planning for a March premiere, and whenever that wraps, Poseidon will step in.



Poseidon takes place out at sea as our two leads, Eric (Strongest Chil Woo) and Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man), are plucked from the maritime police to be part of an elite force of counterterrorist officers, called the Poseidon team. Also starring are Kim Ok-bin (Thirst) and Jeon Hye-bin (Yacha), two lovely ladies who will probably mix things up on the romance front, as well as idol-actor U-Know Yunho, who’s hoping his second foray into dramas will shake out better than his disappointing debut (Heading to the Ground).
