The Goddess of Melodrama herself, Hallyu star Choi Ji-woo (A Star’s Lover, Air City, Winter Sonata) is planning a return to the small screen with the drama Medical School. Well, the title is informative, I’ll give you that, but not so punchy. (I assure you, it’s the same in Korean: 의과대학). I can’t say that I’m all aflutter for a medical melodrama (been theeeeere, done thaaaaat), but I’m happy to hear news that Choi Ji-woo is returning to television.

It’s one thing javabeans and I always say that we love about the K-drama system: that miniseries mean big stars can commit to TV shows without signing away years of their lives, which means they can regularly return to the medium that launched their careers. (See: Lee Byung-heon in IRIS, Bae Yong-joon in Legend).

It’s been two years since her last drama, 2009′s A Star’s Lover, but she’s since starred in the film Actresses alongside heavy-hitter Go Hyun-jung, who is, at least in the last few years, out-shining Choi as the hottest act in town. Perhaps this drama will be the commercial success that she needs to put her back in the game. (Not that, you know, she’s starving or anything.)

She’ll first be starring in the Japanese melodrama Winter Cherry Blossom on TBS, and then move onto pre-production for Medical School. Looks like there’s a chance we’ll see Choi Ji-woo back in K-dramaland before the year is out.

Hallyu Star Song Hye-kyo is releasing a glamorous photobook of her shot by several top photographers including the fashion world's Peter Lindbergh and supermodel-turned-photographer Helena Christensen.

The first of its kind by a Korean actress, the book entitled "Moment" is to be released Friday with proceeds to be donated to an organization for children. Pre-orders have already been placed overseas for over half of the limited first run of 2,000 copies.

Song, 28, was hardly seen on TV after the 2008 drama "Worlds Within", instead participating mostly in small-scale independent films and overseas projects.

She appeared in the episode "Love for Sale" of the omnibus film "Camellia", which screened at last year's Pusan International Film Festival. She also made her overseas debut with the U.S. indie film "Fetish", and played a role in renowned director Wong Kar-wai's new film "The Grand Master".

In between these productions she worked on the photobook, staying overseas for several months to shoot. The book features photos of the actress taken in locations around the world, including Atlanta, New York, Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Paris, the Netherlands and Brazil.

Hallyu star Won Bin garnered a special award at the award ceremony for the "Japan Jewelry Best Dresser" held at the Tokyo Big Sight International Exhibition Center on January 26.

The award ceremony selects the "celebrities who go well with jewelry" in different age groups from teenagers to sixties every year, and Won Bin received the special award at this year's event. Won Bin gave his thoughts, saying, "When a good stone has been polished enough for a long time, it becomes a glittering jewel. Like this, I want to become an actor who continuously polishes myself and becomes a glittering actor for my entire life".

Actor Joo Sang-wook is featured in the upcoming issue of fashion magazine Bazaar, just in time to coincide with two new drama projects: the just-premiered Paradise Ranch on SBS, and the soon-to-come Thorn Birds on KBS.

Joo Sang-wook’s roles in the two dramas are vastly different from each other, just as the two dramas are complete opposites in subject and tone: Paradise Ranch is a light romantic comedy, while Thorn Birds is billed as a melodrama with the potential for lots of weepy angst. The former premiered this week, while the latter will take to airwaves in February.

The sudden confluence of projects is actually more coincidence than anything (Paradise Ranch was delayed and delayed, and finally happened to premiere just as he took on his next role), but it puts Joo in the spotlight just as he’s finally hitting the next stage in his career. Although actor Hyun Bin will be serving his military duties soon, it doesn’t look like he plans on taking it easy. Hyun Bin will be premiering two movies before his departure – a 1966 remake movie called “Late Autumn“, and a melodrama movie called “I Love You, I Love You Not“.

Female fans of all ages have been showing much love. Fans in their 20s stated, “After seeing Hyun Bin on ‘Secret Garden‘, I have become a huge fan” and “The movies will be released soon and I plan to watch both movies at the movie theatre.” Those in their 30s stated, “I don’t plan on choosing just one of the two movies. Also, with both movies going to the Berlin International Film Festival, they must both be somewhat well-made.”

“Late Autumn”, which is premiering on February 17th, is a remake of a famous 1966 Lee Man Hee movie which casts Hyun Bin alongside actress Tang Wei. Filmed in Seattle, the movie is about a serendipitous 3-day love affair between a female inmate on temporary leave and a young man on the run.

“I Love You, I Love You Not” premiers on March 3rd, and Hyun Bin co-stars alongside actress Im Soo Jung. This movie portrays a couple who is on the brink of divorce after five years of marriage. Im Soo Jung’s plays the role of the wife who falls for another man and initiates the divorce, while Hyun Bin plays the husband who is still carefully considerate to his wife – making his intentions unknown.

“Late Autumn” has received an official invitation to the forum section of the ’61st Berlin International Film Festival‘, while “I Love You, I Love You Not” has been invited to the competition section. Considering how the Berlin International Film Festival’s competition sector is a red-carpet event, both Hyun Bin and Im Soo Jung will have the honor of representing Asia by walking the red-carpet.

2PM’s Nichkhun is set to make a cameo appearance in “Dream High” as none other than a modern day Romeo.

In the storyline, Nichkhun will be partnered up with Yoon Young Ah’s character to film a commercial. However, their relationship deepens when the pair gets the opportunity to perform as “Romeo & Juliet” in the showcase. Through playing the star-crossed lovers and becoming a knight in shining armor both onstage and off, Nichkhun will help to rebuild the self confidence of Yoon’s character.

The staff reports that although it was a short scene, Nichkhun’s presence was enough to stir up excitement and positive energy on the set. Based on the photos alone, it’s easy to imagine how our knight and dashing prince had the female staff in quite a flutter.

Ladies, be sure to guard your hearts, because this Romeo is sure to melt it! The episode will air on January 31st.

The Korean government has unveiled an ambitious plan to attract over 10 million foreign visitors in 2011, up sharply from this year's 8.8 million, by promoting itself as an attractive tourist destination.

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), a state-run tourism promotion body headed by CEO Lee Charm , is at the forefront of the campaign, expecting soaring numbers of Chinese tourists to help it achieve its objective as the number of Japanese visitors has stagnated over the past few years.

But its slogan of drawing 10 million foreigners is seeing an awful start as the number of Chinese people coming here during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday from Feb. 2 to 8 is projected to plunge sharply, compared to the same period last year.

The holiday is the busiest travel season for middle-and upper-class Chinese visitors, tourism industry watchers here say, stressing that whether Korea attracts 10 million foreigners from abroad this year or not will be largely determined by how many visitors it brings in from the mainland during the seven-day holiday.



Travel agencies here say that the number of Chinese tourists scheduled to come here during the holiday will drop by as much as 50 percent from last year. In 2010, the nation attracted a record number of travelers from the world's second largest economy during the Lunar New Year holiday, which lasted from Feb. 13 to 19.

Additionally, fewer-than-expected Chinese visitors will negatively affect the bottom line of hotels, department stores and other hospitality-related establishments here.

Hanjin Travel, one of the major tour agencies catering to inbound foreign tourists, said the number of Chinese visitors will drop sharply during the upcoming holiday as more became reluctant to come here, citing North Korea's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, and the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and bird flu.

"We expect a fewer Chinese people to visit here over the eight-day holiday because many feel unsafe, following the North's attack on the island in the West Sea and the heightened military tension between the two Koreas. Additionally, the spread of FMD and bird flu are dampening our efforts to bring Chinese tourists into the country", said a Hanjin Travel official who is in charge of marketing.

She then said the number of Chinese people coming here via her company will go down by about 50 percent, but declined to provide exact numbers.

Mode Tour, another large travel agency, echoed Hanjin's view, saying that Chinese travelers during the upcoming holiday will fall sharply from last year. "We brought in about 2,000 Chinese visitors during the 2010 Lunar New Year holiday. But for this year, the figure will likely be halved to around 1,000 as more Chinese people feel uneasy about their safety here, following the North's military attack in November", the agency's spokeswoman said.



The KTO admitted that the North's attack on Yeonpyeong Island and the spread of FMD have negatively affected Korea's efforts to attract Chinese and other foreign tourists over the past several months.

"In December, we failed to draw as many Chinese and foreign visitors as we had initially hoped, due largely to the rising military tension on the Korean Peninsula. But the situation has improved since the beginning of the year. But we expect the number of Chinese visitors during the upcoming holiday to increase at a much slower rate", said Park Jeong-ha, general manager of KTO's China team.

Park said more Chinese visitors have come here individually, rather than in a group, organized by travel agencies, as eased visa restrictions last summer have encouraged them to venture around the country on their own. "We are positive that the number of Chinese visitors for the whole year will exceed that of 2010", he predicted.

In 2010, the number of Chinese tourists to Korea soared to 1.88 million, up sharply from 1.21 million in 2009, accounting for nearly 22 percent of the total.

On January 25th, the cast of “Dream High” attended a press conference for their show, which was held on the actual film set of the drama. During the interview, 2PM’s Wooyoung shared his thoughts on his debut as an actor.

Wooyoung began by talking about how he’s learning the new craft. “I’m still really nervous right now. When reviewing the monitor, I learn a lot from Taecyeon and Soohyun-hyung. I’m taking part in this drama with the stance of an actor and am truly learning a lot from those around me by ‘bothering’ them for tips (laughter).”

He continued, “I’m learning in a fun way, so I hope viewers look forward to my role as ‘Jason.’”

When asked to choose a scene he liked or disliked, Wooyoung replied,”My favorite scene was the karaoke scene [with IU].“

He continued, “A scene I didn’t particularly like was when I asked ‘Pil Sook’ whether she filed to drop out or not. I think I lacked confidence in that scene, especially since ‘Jason’ is a very confident and charming character overall. I felt like I froze because it was my first time, so those are aspects I will be working on.”

At the mention of his “Milky” love line with IU, he explained, “I’m genuinely thankful towards the viewers for giving their interest and support towards the ‘Pil Sook’ and ‘Jason’ love line. IU helps me greatly, as I feel that her character is great at accepting ‘Jason.’ I hope that their love line continues in a cute and beautiful manner in the future.”

Wooyoung concluded, “Despite the cold weather and her poor condition, she works hard, so I’m proud. Since my castmates are my friends and we’re all heading towards our dreams, there is some competition, but I’m able to work harder because of that. Even if we don’t receive great viewer ratings, I’d still like to thank everyone. I’ll be working harder with better effort.”
