Q: How did it come about that you've made being an actor your goal?

YJ: There was once I had thought about quitting my job as an actor, and to become a director. But as an actor, I have many people supporting me; this sense of responsibility... propelled me to work harder; so I reconsidered the matter of being an actor, and decided to continue working hard at it.

Q: Can you talk about the little stories and incidents when you were a rookie in a leading role?

YJ: KBS asked me to go for an audition, so I went. But it took ten hours, and at that time, I was actually thinking about... What if i was (really) selected to be the male lead?
YJ: KBS ขอให้ผมไปออดิชั่น (ทดสอบหน้ากล้อง) ผมก็เลยไป แต่ตอนนั้นใช้เวลาตั้ง 10 ช.ม. ผมก็เคยคิดนะครับว่า ถ้าเกิดผมได้รับเลือกให้เป็นพระเอกขึ้นมาจริง ๆล่ะ
The reason was I didn't make any preparation and was not ready; I did not have the confidence of an actor. I had gone for the audition just to try out and see how things would turn out. I was selected by PD Jeong Gi Song and PD Yoon Suk Ho. My first thought was what was I going to do from then on. I was so uneasy and uncomfortable.เพราะผมไม่ได้เตรียมตัวและรู้สึกยังไม่พร้อม ผมจึงไม่มีความมั่นใจที่จะเป็นนักแสดง ผมไปออดิชั่นเพราะแค่อยากลองดูว่ามันจะออกมาเป็นยังไง แต่ผู้กำกับจงกีซงกับผู้กำกับยุนซุกโฮเลือกผม ความคิดแรกของผมก็คือผมจะทำอะไรต่อไปดี ผมรู้สึกอึดอัดและไม่สบายใจ
And as we're talking about it now... I'm reminded of how expensive the parking fees were at that time. (laughs) I parked my car there for ten hours during the audition... (laughs) The audition incident is unforgettable.

Q: What about the anecdotes during the filming of Love's Greetings?

YJ: I was always being scolded by the PDs during that time. There was this incident of a scene we had to shoot using the 'rain' created by the water-spray vehicle. At that time, I was required to show an expression of really being in the rain. How to say this... an expression of 'pleasant surprise'...?
YJ: ตอนนั้นผมถูกผู้กำกับด่าบ่อยๆ มีอยู่ฉากหนึ่งที่ต้องมี “ฝน” ซึ่งต้องใช้รถพ่นน้ำเพื่อทำฝน ตอนนั้นผมต้องแสดงสีหน้าเหมือนคนที่อยู่กลางฝนจริงๆ จะพูดว่ายังไงดีล่ะครับ คือสีหน้า “ตื่นเต้นแปลกใจ” น่ะI was unable to achieve the look, and we had finished spraying all the water from the vehicle... the PD still had not given the OK. The PD gave me a very bad scolding... (laughs)แต่ผมทำไม่ได้ซะที สุดท้ายเราพ่นน้ำกันจนเกลี้ยง แต่ผู้กำกับก็ยังไม่ให้ผ่าน เขาด่าผมซะเละเลย

Q: You acted in three dramas in the year 1995, surely that was very tiring?
Q: ในปี 1995 คุณแสดงละครถึง 3 เรื่อง คงเหนื่อยมากเลยสินะ
YJ: Generally speaking, I forget things with the passage of time. But even now I still think it was really tough. It was the most difficult times both physically and mentally. The filming took place everyday throughout the night. And at that time, I was involved in many CFs...Feels like it's just yesterday... (laughs)
YJ: จะว่าไปแล้วผมลืมหมดแล้วเพราะเวลาผ่านมานาน แต่พอคิดถึงมันก็นับว่าหนักมากๆ ครับ เป็นช่วงเวลาที่ลำบากสุดๆ ทั้งกับร่างกายและจิตใจ มีการถ่ายทำทุกวัน ตลอดทั้งคืน ตอนนั้นผมเล่นโฆษณาเยอะด้วย รู้สึกเหมือนเพิ่งผ่านไปเมื่อวานนี้เอง
From that time, I swore never to work on more than one project at any one time. (laughs) I know I'm unable to do that. So after that, I've only concentrated on one production at one time.

Q: You've not really experienced being a father in real life, and yet you acted in Papa, how do you feel about it?

YJ: I've forgotten how I'd acted that role. Even up till now, I still don't know how I had acted out that role during that time. To play a role that's about bringing up and educating a child, really... how did I do it?
YJ: ผมลืมไปแล้วว่าผมแสดงบทนั้นได้ยังไง จนถึงตอนนี้ผมก็ยังไม่รู้ว่าตอนนั้นแสดงบทนั้นไปได้ยังไง การรับบทที่ต้องคอยเลี้ยงดูและสั่งสอนลูกแบบนั้น ผมเล่นไปได้ยังไงนะ
If I watch (the drama) now, I will feel so embarrassed and shy.

Q: Please talk about the drama First Love...

YJ: 1997, First Love (Cheot Sarang)...

YJ: ปี 1997 ละครเรื่อง First Love

Sunny Place of the Young and First Love are both scripts from the deceased So Jo Hye. She doted on me. Recalling those days... The drama was a story about the love and sadness of a family. The cast of Soo Jong hyung, Chae Wan nuna, Mr In-Moon were all like my real brother, sister and father. I remember I was acting out my role with that kind of (real) feelings.

Sunny Place of the Youth กับ First Love เขียนบทโดย โซโจเฮ ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้ว เธอเอ็นดูผมมากครับ พอนึกถึงวันเหล่านั้น ละครเรื่องนี้เกี่ยวกับความรักและความเศร้าของครอบครัวหนึ่ง นักแสดงอย่างเช่น ซูจุงฮุง, พี่แชวาน, คุณอินมุน เป็นเหมือนพี่ชาย พี่สาว และพ่อของผมจริงๆ ผมยังจำได้ว่าแสดงบทนั้นด้วยความรู้สึกแบบนี้จริงๆ

During that time, PD Lee said to me, "I hope that you will act like a language teacher in elementary school." That's to say the character's speech had to be accurate and precise. His (Chan Woo) character is that sort of role." The memory still stays fresh in my mind even now.

ในตอนนั้นผู้กำกับลีบอกผมว่า “ผมอยากให้คุณแสดงเหมือนคุณครูสอนภาษาในโรงเรียนเด็กประถม” นั่นเป็นการบอกว่าการพูดของตัวละครต้องให้ถูกต้องตามหลักเป๊ะๆ ชางวุนเป็นแบบนั้น จนถึงเดี๋ยวนี้ผมยังจดจำทุกอย่างได้ชัดเจนครับ

Q: Please talk about the drama Barefooted Youth...

Q: ช่วยพูดถึงละครเรื่อง Barefooted Youth หน่อย
YJ: That's a drama from ten years ago. Is that right? (laughs)

YJ: นั่นมัน 10 ปีมาแล้วใช่มั้ยครับ
That drama is really... That's the first drama that I'd appeared without wearing glasses. Because of this, I had sought and listened to opinions from all fronts.

นั่นเป็นละครเรื่องแรกที่ผมแสดงโดยไม่สวมแว่น เพราะเหตุนี้ผมจึงคอยสอบถามความเห็นจากทุกฝ่ายAnd then... during the phase I was trying to get into the role, I also started training. I carried out proper physical training, but perhaps I was forcing myself, I hurt my leg. I was wearing a cast for over half a year, I think. (laughs)

และระหว่างที่ผมกำลังจะรับบทนี้ ผมก็เริ่มฟิตซ้อมร่างกาย ผมฝึกฝนร่างกายตามสมควร แต่อาจเป็นเพราะผมฝืนตัวเองเกินไป ผมจึงบาดเจ็บที่ขา ผมต้องสวมเฝือกอยู่กว่าครึ่งปี

The filming was carried out when my leg was hurt... I could not move my leg, and it was very painful as well. It was really difficult during that time. I had worked so hard to create and mould that character, it's a regret and a pity that I got hurt.

การถ่ายทำต้องเลื่อนออกไปเพราะขาของผมเจ็บ ผมขยับขาไม่ได้เลย มันเจ็บมากๆ เป็นอะไรที่ลำบากมากในช่วงนั้น ผมทุ่มเทอย่างหนักเพื่อรับบทบาทนั้น จึงรู้สึกเสียใจอย่างยิ่งที่ตัวเองเกิดมาบาดเจ็บ

Q: Which work of yours left you with the deepest impression?

Q: งานชิ้นไหนที่ทำให้คุณประทับใจที่สุด
YJ: If i have to choose, it will be Have We Really Loved. I had played the role of an ambitious young man who only wanted to achieve success all his life. His age and other traits were similar to me, so it was easier to relate and therefore act.

YJ: ถ้าต้องเลือกคงเป็น Have We Really Loved ครับ ผมรับบทเป็นชายหนุ่มที่ทะเยอทะยาน ที่ทั้งชีวิตต้องการแค่ความสำเร็จ ทั้งอายุและนิสัยขบถแบบนั้นคล้ายกับผมมาก จึงเป็นเรื่องง่ายที่ผมจะเข้าถึงบทบาทนั้น

Of course young men in their 20s would have some ambitions and aspirations. The leading role that I played was someone who felt that life itself was hard and painful. I could sympathize with this, and so I got into the role very naturally.

แน่นอนที่เด็กหนุ่มวัย 20 ย่อมมีความทะเยอทะยานและแรงบันดาลใจ บทพระเอกที่ผมเล่นเป็นคนที่รู้สึกว่าชีวิตนี้ช่างยากลำบากและแสนเจ็บปวด ผมเข้าใจความรู้สึกนี้และเข้าถึงบทบาทได้อย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ

The character passed away because of a brain tumor in the end, and because of this, he had suffered a lot of pain. There was one day when I really had a headache, and I started to worry if my brain too had some abnormal growth, so I went for a check-up. It was like this that I allowed the role to grow and stay into the deepest of my heart. So I think (it's because of this), the family rated this highly...

ตัวละครตัวนี้ต้องตายในตอนจบเพราะโรคมะเร็งสมอง และเขาต้องทนทรมานแสนสาหัส มีอยู่วันหนึ่งผมถึงกับรู้สึกปวดหัวขึ้นมาจริงๆ และเริ่มเป็นกังวลว่าเกิดอะไรผิดปกติกับสมองของผมหรือเปล่า ผมจึงรีบไปหาหมอ มันเหมือนว่าผมปล่อยให้บทบาทนี้เข้ามาสิงอยู่ลึกๆ ในใจของผมจริงๆ ผมว่าเพราะแบบนี้แฟนๆ จึงชื่นชอบละครเรื่องนี้

To me, that drama was also full of memories and very meaningful.

สำหรับผมแล้ว ละครเรื่องนี้เต็มไปด้วยความทรงจำและมีความหมายมากๆ ครับ

Q: You're transforming yourself in a way that's noticeable. In what manner and mental state do you approach acting?

Q: คุณปรับเปลี่ยนตัวเองถึงขนาดที่เห็นได้อย่างชัดเจน คุณใช้อะไรเป็นแรงจูงใจในการแสดง

YJ: To an actor, that's actually a compliment. If I always play the same type of roles, then there's really not much meaning to it, and for myself, I will also lose the desire for improvement.

YJ: สำหรับนักแสดง นั่นถือว่าเป็นคำชมนะครับ ถ้าผมเล่นแต่บทซ้ำเดิมอยู่เรื่อยๆ มันก็ย่อมไม่มีความหมายอะไร สำหรับตัวผมเองคงจะพลอยหมดไฟในการพัฒนาตัวเองไปด้วย

From an actor's perspective, it's a dream to play all sorts of roles, and this will elevate one's ability and broaden one's acting horizon. In future, I will challenge roles that I've never acted in before.

จากมุมมองของนักแสดง มันคือความฝันที่จะได้เล่นบทบาทหลากหลาย มันจะช่วยยกระดับความสามารถ และขยายขอบเขตการแสดงออกไป ในอนาคตผมก็จะท้าทายกับบทบาทที่ผมไม่เคยแสดงมาก่อน

Q: To transform oneself by playing many different roles, that seems to be a great job?!

Q: การปรับเปลี่ยนตัวเองด้วยการรับบทหลากหลาย นั่นคงเป็นงานที่หนักเอาการ
YJ: Hehe... (laughs) That's the advantage of being an actor, isn't it? (To explore) what else is latent within oneself... I think each and every one of us have got many sides, and to be able to display and demonstrate the different sides through acting, and then improve oneself, that's a job that will give much joy and happiness.

YJ: นั่นคือผลพลอยได้ของการเป็นนักแสดงใช่มั้ยครับ ยังมีอีกหลายอย่างที่แอบแฝงอยู่ในตัวเรา ผมคิดว่าเราทุกคนต่างมีหลายด้าน และการได้แสดงด้านต่างๆ ผ่านการแสดง และการได้พัฒนาตัวเอง นั่นเป็นงานที่น่าสนุกและมีความสุขครับ

Q: What's your impression of snow?

(snowkin： the narration indicated that there are many snow scenes in YJ"s dramas.)

Q: คุณมีความประทับใจอย่างไรบ้างกับหิมะ
YJ: It's really a little incredible, I've filmed dramas mostly in winters. Even the dramas in the past were like that. Of course, the impression of winter is beautiful to me. In terms of TV dramas, I think of first love, falling in love...

YJ: เป็นเรื่องที่เหลือเชื่อจริงๆ ครับ ที่ผมถ่ายละครในหน้าหนาวซะเป็นส่วนใหญ่ แม้แต่ละครเรื่องที่ผ่านๆ มาก็เช่นกัน ความประทับใจเกี่ยวกับฤดูหนาวของผมก็คือความสวยงาม ในแง่ของละคร ผมย่อมคิดถึงรักครั้งแรก การตกหลุมรัก

(But) my very first thought is probably 'cold'. (laughs) When filming TV dramas, we tended to wear thinner clothes, so it's full of cold memories. (laughs).

แต่ความคิดแรกของผมกลับเป็น “ความหนาวเหน็บ” เวลาที่ถ่ายละครเราต้องสวมเสื้อผ้าบางๆ มันเลยมีแต่ความทรงจำที่หนาวเหน็บทั้งนั้นครับ

Not sure why, but I'm feeling weaker in the cold from year to year. Is it just me? Haha...

ไม่ค่อยแน่ใจเหมือนกันว่าเพราะอะไร แต่ผมรู้สึกว่าทนความหนาวเย็นได้น้อยลงทุกทีในแต่ละปีที่ผ่านไป เป็นแค่ผมคนเดียวหรือเปล่าครับ

Q: What are the differences when it comes to getting into a character for TV dramas and movies?

Q: อะไรคือข้อแตกต่างเมื่อพูดถึงการแสดงละครทีวีกับการแสดงหนัง
YJ: One can use a longer time to produce a TV drama, and there will be many small stories and incidents to paint and outline the personalities of the characters. From this aspect, it's easier to act in TV dramas.

YJ: เราใช้เวลาในการผลิตละครทีวีได้นานกว่า มีเรื่องราวและเหตุการณ์ย่อยๆ มากมายที่ช่วยเพิ่มสีสันให้กับตัวละคร การแสดงละครทีวีจึงง่ายกว่า

But it's different when it comes to movies, every single scene is important; the requirement is to portray the characters completely and thoroughly within a very short time.

แต่มันต่างกันเมื่อพูดถึงหนัง ทุกๆ ฉากมีความสำคัญ ต้องนำเสนอตัวละครให้สมบูรณ์และชัดเจนภายในเวลาอันสั้น

If we were to compare movies and TV dramas, then a movie is to capture everything that we need to express in a single scene. A drama will use many smaller anecdotes to flesh out the characters. It's different from this aspect.

ถ้าจะเปรียบเทียบหนังกับละคร หนังต้องจับทุกอย่างที่เราต้องการนำเสนอมาไว้ในฉากเดียว ส่วนละครใช้เหตุการณ์ย่อยๆ ในการนำเสนอตัวละครได้ มันจึงต่างกันเพราะเหตุนี้ครับ

Q: How are the injuries sustained from the filming of TWSSG?

Q: อาการบาดเจ็บจากการถ่ายทำ TWSSG หนักหนาแค่ไหน
YJ: I did not just fall off from the horse, someone even fell on my body. And the sword that I was using was very heavy, so when I had to shoot scenes of waving the sword about, I felt as though my wrist would be dislocated. (laughs)

YJ: ผมไม่ใช่แค่ตกจากหลังม้า ยังมีคนหล่นลงมาทับผมด้วย และกระบี่ที่ผมใช้ก็หนักมาก เวลาที่ผมต้องถ่ายฉากแกว่งกระบี่ ผมรู้สึกเหมือนข้อมือจะหลุดซะให้ได้

And then there's the operation I had on my shoulder from the torn muscle. As for my knee, I'm still undergoing physiotherapy. The doctor says it's almost fully recovered, it's okay now.

แล้วยังมีการผ่าตัดที่ไหล่เนื่องจากกล้ามเนื้อฉีกขาด สำหรับที่เข่า ผมยังคงต้องทำกายภาพบำบัดอยู่ หมอบอกว่าเกือบหายดีแล้ว ตอนนี้ก็ไม่เป็นอะไรมากแล้วครับ

Q: Have you ever worried about anything when it comes to (your) acting?

Q: คุณเคยเป็นกังวลกับอะไรบ้างมั้ยเวลาที่แสดง

YJ: En... yea... but it's a bit embarrassing... that is I often imagine that my performance today is my last performance, or that this work is perhaps my last work, my last scene.

YJ: ครับ แต่มันน่าอายจัง ผมชอบคิดว่าการแสดงวันนี้ของผมอาจเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย หรืองานนี้อาจเป็นงานสุดท้ายของผม ฉากสุดท้ายของผม

Q: BYJ Festival will become the symbol for Skyperfectv, how do you feel about it?
(*bb: sorry, i don't quite understand this part, so i might have mis-translated it. can someone please enlighten me huh?)

Q: BYJ Festival จะกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ Skyperfectv คุณรู้สึกยังไงบ้าง

YJ: I feel honored to be able to partake in the Skyperfectv CF. Skyperfectv will be airing my dramas and also the other programs, I think this is a meaningful CF, and I'm also very happy about it. In future, I will hard work so that the audience can watch the TV programs happily.

YJ: ผมรู้สึกเป็นเกียรติที่ได้มีส่วนร่วมใน Skyperfectv CF Skyperfectv จะออกอากาศละครของผม และรายการอื่นๆ ด้วย ผมคิดว่านี่มีความหมายมาก และผมรู้สึกยินดีมาก ในอนาคต ผมจะทุ่มเทให้มากเพื่อให้ผู้ชมได้ชมรายการอย่างมีความสุข
