Actress Lee Bo-yeong has been appointed goodwill ambassador for the 10th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification slated for Oct. 10.

The Korea Forest Service chose Lee because of her keen interest in environmental causes. As a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for several years, Lee has taken part in various charity events, doing volunteer work in Mongolia and participating in advertising campaigns for a clean environment.

"There'll be a keener interest among the general public with the appointment of Lee Bo-yeong, who has set an example by participating in environmental protection and charity activities", A Korea Forest Service spokesman said. "We hope her appointment will contribute to a successful conference".

Lee was appointed at an event at the COEX convention center in Samseong-dong, Seoul on Thursday. She will also attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the UNCCD conference.

The UNCCD has 193 member countries and is one of the three largest international environmental conventions aimed at preventing desertification caused by reckless development and abuse of land.
