"Masquerade," starring actor Lee Byung-hun and actress Han Hyo-joo, debuted atop the local box office with a massive opening of about 1.2 billion Korean won [approximately $1 million] in sales on Thursday, according to Korean Film Council [KOFIC] data.
Smashing the domestic opening ticketsales record of "Tazza: The High Rollers" (2006), 136,950 admits, and "The Crucibles" (2011), 136,094 admits, Choo's historical pic attracted 167,642 moviegoers in just one day.
Officials from the promotion firm, 1st Look, said through a press release this morning that the record is more meaningful in that September is the slow season for the film industry as the summer holiday has come to an end.
"Masquerade" tells the story of a low class man named Ha-sun becoming the king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Gwang-hae.
Korean heartthrob Lee plays a double role of Ha-sun and Gwanghae, while actor Ryu Seung-ryong of "All About My Wife" (2012) and actress Han Hyo-joo each plays the king's courtier and wife.
The movie is set to be screened in 12 selected theaters in North America’s major cities including Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto, according to the film's official English website.
