[News] Names of Shows and Dramas that Have Our Heads Spinning.

There has been a recurring theme in recent times as we here at enewsworld started having long discussions about some of the programs/movies/dramas that are airing.

As variety programs get canceled or new dramas are being announced, we’ve noticed that the titles of these shows have been getting longer or more ridiculous by the minute, giving us a major headache on what to decide for the English title.

Here are some of what we’ve had to work with.

The One Trying to Wear the Crown, Withstand the Weight – The Heirs.

We love Lee Min Ho.
We love Park Shin Hye.
We even love the drama writer Lee Eun Sook (who gave us a long list of wonderful dramas, like Secret Garden or A Gentleman’s Dignity, but we will not understand this title.

This new upcoming drama is already gathering much anticipation with Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye cast, but we have to wonder if this long title was really worth coming up with, especially since even the Korean media is tired of typing out every word of the title and just merely calling it The Heirs - which we plan on doing.

Hopefully, the drama will be as good as this lengthy title.

The Sun of the Lord (?)

This one is a real doozy.

Rumored to have So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin as its main leads, The Sun of the Lord (???) probably won’t get an official title until the drama airs, because this one can be called so many different names with just ‘Joo Goon ae Taeyang.’

“주군” or “Joo Goon” by definition can mean a lord/master, stationing troops, National Guard – whatever you want it. So we’re not even sure if we’re writing the right title as we use The Sun of the Lord for the time being.

Also, since the premise of the drama is about a woman who can see dead people, “Joo Goon” can be an awful play–on-words to “죽은” or “Jook eun,” which means “dead.”

And many times, we’ve seen titles like these turn out to be the characters’ names, so we might have characters named ‘Joo Goon’ and ‘Taeyang’ in this upcoming drama to make the title, “Joo Goon’s Taeyang.”

Especially because it’s a Hong Sisters drama, the possibilities for an English translation of this title can be endless.

We’ll just have to watch and see what the drama is about before we settle on the perfect one.

When Men Are in Love

When a maaaaaan lovesss a woman!

Sorry, we just had to add that in there.

There has been a sudden influx of men doing things – running, living alone, and now falling in love.

Not only did Infinite come out with the new song, Man in Love, there’s an upcoming movie called When a Man Loves and an ongoing drama called When a Man Loves, and we’re just convinced that April is the time when all men are in love.

We’re all for men in love (especially if it’s with us…), but it’s tough when shows and movies with the same title come out all at once, further confusing us in this world of easy-to-confuse titles.

We love this poetic movie title in Korean, so it’s super unfortunate that the artistic beauty gets lost as it’s translated.

It ends up sounding a bit childish and at the same time way more dramatic than the original Korean title suggests, but at the end of the day, we’re still going to watch it, since Park Shin Hye and Yoon Kye Sang are leading it. and it’ll be uploaded online.

And this most recent one.

The new variety program starring Kang Ho Dong, TVXQ’s Changmin, and Lee Soo Geun had us stumped.

At times like this, when the original Korean title is shortened into an acronym, we wish it would work as swiftly as it does in Korea when it’s translated into English.

The Korean title includes, ‘Yeh Chae Neung’ which stand for ‘yehneung’ (variety), ‘chaeyook’ (sports), and ‘neungryukja’ (a powerful person/master). When it really comes down to it, we can technically translate the title as “Our Neighborhood’s MVS’ but it just lacks that kick that the Korean title provides.

So that′s our rant for strange titles these days.

Lee Byung Hun swept through China with his acting in G.I. Joe 2, cementing his status as one of the most popular actors in Asia.

On April 10, the actor attended the 9th Huading Awards held in Hong Kong, and won the Best Foreign Actor Award.

The ceremony awards actors chosen through an audience vote from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Macau and other countries in the Greater China area.

Lee Byung Hun and Han Ga In attended the ceremony this day and mingled with such top Chinese stars as Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Simon Yam, Tse Ting Fung, Fan Bing Bing and more.

After receiving the award, Lee Byung Hun said, "I want to thank my fans inside and outside of Korea for helping me get to where I am now. I especially want to thank my childhood hero and the best action star Jackie Chan."

He then received a big hug from Jackie Chan himself.

The actor appeared onstage again to award the Best Lead Actress Award, and as he handed the winner Fan Bing Bing her award, he taught her how to say "Be happy" in Korean and warmed the air.

Lee Byung Hun is currently meeting audiences around the world with his second Hollywood film G.I. Joe 2.

On April 10, KBS announced that several KBS shows won significant awards at “2013 New York Festival – World’s Best TV & Films” in Las Vegas.

Documentary “KBS Special – Kim Jong Il” won the silver world medal in Current Affairs category under “Television – Documentary/Information Programs” and another impressive documentary “Icarus’s Dream” was given the bronze world medal in Sports and Recreation category.

KBS “Princess’s Man” was the only Korean drama that brought home a medal. The show won bronze world medal in Drama category under “Television – Regularly Scheduled Entertainment Program.” MBC “Moon that Embraces the Sun” was also nominated under the Mini-series category, but only received a finalist certificate.

Meanwhile, “New York Festival” is an overall award show for any TV program, including news, documentary, drama, entertainment, and so on. “2013 New York Festival” was its 55th award show and more than 50 countries participated in the event.

The main poster for director Kim Ji-woon's "One Perfect Day" has been unveiled along with still photos from the poster shoot.

The film is the second in the Kolon Sport's 40th Anniversary series, "Way to Nature". The first was "Day Trip" directed by brothers Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyung and was released in December.

"One Perfect Day" centers on a loser in love, Uncheol (played by Yoon Gye-sang) and a girl of his dreams Eun-hee (Park Shin-hye). Director Kim has until now tried his hand at different genres of film but this is his first romantic comedy.

In the poster, Park and Yoon look striking and it comes with the copyline, "the only choice which I thought was the best".

The film will be released via the Kolon Sports website on April 29.

Chinese films starring top Korean celebrities will soon hit theaters at home. “The Warring States,” starring Kim Hee-sun, will be released in Korea on May 9. It was first released in China in 2011.

Kim plays a character named Pang Fei, the queen of Wei. It was her first movie in eight years after “Myth” (2005).

A little before Kim’s comeback, actor Kwon Sang-woo will also come to theaters in romance film “Shadows of Love.”

The movie, scheduled to be released on April 25 in Korea, was shown last year in China.

In the movie, Kwon plays a couple with Cecilia Cheung as Kwon asks florist Cheung from a poor family to become his girlfriend for a week because she resembles his former lover.

Kwon also appears in another Chinese movie produced early this year.

“Chinese Zodiac,” directed by and starring Jackie Chan, came out in February.

Lee Sang-yoon and Yoon Jin-seo are making a comeback to the big screen in a romantic film “Santa Barbara” to be directed by Cho Sung-kyu. While Lee Sang-yoon will take the role of a passionate music producer, Yoon Jin-seo is to play the part of an account executive in the film. The story centers on two very different characters and the romance between them as they leave for the U.S. city of Santa Barbara.

Korean actress Yoon Jin-seo found her fame through director Park Chan-wook’s mystery thriller ‘Oldboy” (2003).

Lee Sang-yoon is well-known for his role as a devoted husband in the highly-rated KBS2 TV drama “My Daughter Seo-young.”

“I am thrilled because it has been a while since I was in a film. I am practicing the guitar in order to effectively portray a music producer,” said Lee Sang-yoon.

The shooting of the film will start at the end of this month and the shooting in Santa Barbara is scheduled in May.

The new Korean comedy-action “Running Man” has landed at the No. 1 spot on the Korean Box office.

The newly released film grabbed the top spot after drawing in 501,908 moviegoers during the weekend of April 5 to 7, Korean Box Office Information System [KOBIS] showed Monday.

Starring Shin Ha-Kyun, the 127-minute action film centers round Cha Jong Woo who is on the run in order to prove his innocence after he becomes a murder suspect. 

Hollywood sci-fi action “G. I. Joe: Retaliation” dropped to the No. 2 spot with 464,619 moviegoers last weekend.

While “Very Ordinary Couple” slipped down to the No. 3 spot with 206,164 moviegoers, Korean drama “My Paparotti” ranked at the fourth position grabbing 146,450 moviegoers.

 Last week's newly released films included the Hollywood sci-fi fantasy “The Host,” the U.S. romantic comedy from  “Hope Springs,” and the Korean romance “In My End Is My Beginning.”

Other films which entertained Korean moviegoers last weekend were third top-grossing Korean film of all time “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” the Korean film noir “New World,” and the Hollywood zombie romance “Warm Bodies.”

The professional organization of Korean film reporters is to help overseas fans get an overview of Korean actors and actresses. 

The Korea Film Reporters Association [KOFRA] said on April 4 that they concluded a translation deal for its Korean actors’ mobile application in English and Japanese on Tuesday.

The Korean actors’ app, a dictionary of some 400 Korean actors and actresses including professional actors as well as idol stars, has been produced originally in Korean by the KOFRA’s vice-president Yoo Jae-hyuk and the association’s five members.

“We’re aiming at build a scientific database of Korean actors for those overseas. The app is expected to encourage overseas industry insiders and fans to gain a deep insight into Korean actors and contact agencies if they need,” said Kim Ho-il, President of the professional organization.

Film journalist and film festival English MC Nemo Kim teamed up with film critic Darcy Paquet to undertake the English translation side, while Professor of Seokyeong University Chiharu Izumi and film critic Jung Ji-wook are to do the translations in Japanese.

The English and Japanese language apps are expected to be available from September.

Ha Ji-won’s new movie “The Huntresses” will hit theaters a little later than originally planned.

Although the comedy was previously scheduled to be released in May, distributor Showbox said that there would be a delay but did not provide a revised date.

“We are working to wrap up some details regarding computer graphics to make the movie more complete,” said an official at Showbox. “We have changed the company creating graphics in the middle and that may have caused delays.”

The film is about a female trio hunting for criminal suspects to win prize money in the Joseon Dynasty.

Ha plays Jinok, the leader of the three, while Kang Ye-won of “Tidal Wave” (2009) and “Fost Sweepers” (2012) plays the married huntress Hongdan. Ga-in of girl group Brown Eyed Girls takes the role of Gabi, who acts first then thinks.

Meanwhile, Ha pledged to donate all the proceeds she earns from her essay “At This Moment” to the KJ Choi Foundation to support artists in need. The scholarship fund was named Hartist after the actress.

Han Hye Jin has decided on her next big screen piece.

On April 4, Han Hye Jin′s agency Namoo Actors announced that "Han Hye Jin was offered a role in the film When a Man Falls in Love, and she took up the offer."

The actress will appear as Ho Jung, a woman who invites love to the heart of the ruffian Tae Il.

When a Man Falls in Love will be the second piece by Sanayi Pictures following The New World, and will be the full-length debut piece by director Han Dong Wook, assistant director of The Unjust.

Han Hye Jin will be taking on another film following her previous feat with 26 Years.

Actress Kim Min-hee has declined to star in the movie "Band of Thieves".
Kim Min-hee was a likely candidate for the movie "Band of Thieves", starring Ha Jeong-woo and Kang Dong-won, but decided not to do it.

Kim was to star as Ma Hyang, a member of a gang. After this fall through, the production is in contact with someone else to take up the position.

"Band of Thieves" is based in Chosun Times when there was a group of Robin Hood figures who stole from the bad rich and shared the wealth with those who needed it and authority figures. Ha Jeong-woo takes on the role of Baek Jeong and Kang Dong-won takes on the role of Moo Gwan.

Popular Korean stars gathered together at the VIP preview event of a Korean independent film “Azooma” directed by producer-turned-director Lee Ji-seung.

The VIP screening took place a few hours after a press preview attended by film critics and film journalists.

“I want to show my appreciation to actor Hwang Tae-kwang’s skilled portrayal of the criminal. Cast members and the director must have gone through lots of hardships,” said actor Lee Jong-hyuk, one of the four cute bachelors in 2012 hit TV series “Gentlemen’s Dignity.”

“Rooftop Prince” star Jung Suk-won gave a favorable comment about the film saying that, “I loved Jang Young-nam’s [who played the mother] enthusiastic performance. The film makes you think a lot.”

The bold tale about a mother’s vengeance on a villain who sexually abused her 10-year-old daughter is slated to open a new phase of catharsis at Korean theaters from April 18.

Actress Kim Min-hee is famous for her coveted body and distinctive fashion sense. But those were not the only ways the actress wanted to be described. She always aspired to be recognized as an actress instead of just ?a fashion icon. Through numerous performances ?over a decade, she has proved her acting chops?. But it was not an easy journey for the model-turned-actress.

The 31-year-old first ?became famous as a cover girl in 1999. Thanks to her unique beauty, she had lucked into appearing on the hit drama “School 2” as a rebellious high school girl, wh?ich ?launched her to stardom. She enjoyed the popularity, appearing on ?TV dramas and movies. However, a string of poor acting performances brought her crushing reviews.

Despite harsh criticisms, Kim kept honing her acting skills and it ?paid off when she starred in the drama “Good-bye Solo” in 2006. ?Roles in other movies such as “Hellcats/ I Like It Hot” in 2007 and “Actresses” in 2009 helped solidify her career.

She ?kept ?stretching the limits of her acting range by playing a mysterious girl who disappears ahead of a wedding in last year’s psychological thriller, “Helpless,” in which she showed such a striking screen presence that she won the best actress award by Buil Film Awards last year.

Recently, the versatile movie star is earning rave reviews for her performance in the recently released movie “Degree of Love.”

“Degree of Love” tells the story about an on-and-off couple of three years. It’s not a typical romantic movie in which two leads unconditionally are devoted to each other. Instead, it brings reality into play. It is full of bickering, foul words and even physical fights, but sometimes sparking romance that makes viewers’ hearts flutter.

Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of Korea JoongAng Daily, recently sat down with the actress to talk about her latest movie.


Q. The character you played in the movie and your personality seem to have a lot in common.

A. Jang Young, the role I play, pretends to be strong to hide her weakness just as I do. So I could fully get into her while performing the character. But the attitude toward her boyfriend is totally different. For example, she gets back at her ex-boyfriend for trivial things but I don’t keep things inside.


What was it like to work with your co-star Lee Min-ki?

We got close very quickly, so I could work without any trouble. He is three years my junior and also my junior in the modeling field. So I felt comfortable with him. I guess he thinks the same way with me. [Laugh] I thought he is pure and innocent when I watched him on his drama. He actually is. He was a good partner.


You mostly wear no makeup in the movie. You must have put a lot of effort into taking care of your skin.

I tried to avoid wearing makeup so the character could be seen as a more real-life character. I have cared my skin for so long so I didn’t have to intensively care for my skin. But since I turned 30, I pay more attention. Actually, Min-ki asked me to drink together several times during the production. But I had to turn down his offer because of my skin. I feel sorry for him about that.

There is a scene where you two exchange shots of alcohol. Did you really get drunk?

I did seven movies in 14 years after “School 2.” But in none of them I drank to better act. I know I could appear more realistic in drinking scenes if I actually drink. But I’m more concerned if it could harm the whole frame of the production. But I think it is worth giving it a try if I work with director Hong Sang-soo [who is known for a spontaneous filming style].


The physical fight scene is quite impressive.

It was hard to express externally while suppressing my emotion. It was not only mentally demanding work but physically exhausting. After all, it helps me to summon up the emotions. We were so immersed in the scene that my skin was chafed and bled while taking the scene.


Have you ever had fisticuffs with boyfriends?

No way, you know it’s not normal. Of course, it’s likely to happen if men start the fight.


Was there any particular scene you sympathize with your character?

Yes, when she has a meal with her family the day after the break-up. She spits out any random words to look fine. I sounded like I was speaking an unknown dialect. Just like her, I don’t express my emotions when I’m going through tough times. Sometimes I burst into tears when I feel like I’m being understood by someone. But the situation makes me more depressed. So I act as if there is nothing going on.


How was your bed scene?

I shot the scene without difficulty. What’s interesting is that we were not naked and it was not steamy. The director always put the actors’ emotions first and tried to bring the emotions into the lens. She delicately filmed the kisses and light touches. So it could be turned into a sweet bed scene. I love it.


Are you in a relationship?

I’m not involved in any relationship. Sometimes I want to get married, watching my friends getting married. But now I want to focus on building my career.


What strong point do you think you have?

I think I need to wait and see to confidently say something is my strong point. I don’t want to make up my image. I believe I will have my own virtue if I keep working.

Son Ye-jin, Kim Min-hee, Kim Ah-joong, Lee Min-jeong and others who are currently very active in movies and dramas all happen to be born in 1982. Although some may say they are not as active as some actors these days, these actresses have been quite busy.

Son Ye-jin is clearly one of them. She's getting serious this spring. She will transform her mellow image this May in KBS 2TV drama "Shark" as a passionate prosecutor. She is also a daughter who suspects her father of a crime in the thriller movie "The Accomplice".

Kim Min-hee is busy trying out everything. She left a strong impression in the movie "Helpless" last year and is proving her existence with "Very Ordinary Couple". She says, "There is something I can express the best at this age. I want to attempt in many things".

Kim Ah-joong was successful with "My P.S Partner" and is getting ready for another romantic comedy called, "Only You - 2013". Lee Min-jeong is coming back with the SBS drama "Everything About My Relationship".

They are all talented stars. Their confidence and possibilities come from the long term experience in this field of over ten years. They have experienced a lot during that time and that allows them many choices to choose from.

Kim Myung Min will be returning to the big screen again as Um Hong Gil, the famed mountain climber.

According to officials on April 3, Kim Myung Min confirmed he would appear in the film Himalayas (tentative title).

It will be his first film in six months following Spy.

Himalayas will be based on a true story about how Um Hong Gil climbed Mount Everest in order to collect the body of his junior, the late Park Moo Taek, in 2005.

His determination to find his friend had drawn great attention and praise at the time, even bringing his team to be dubbed the ′Humane Expedition′.

Kim Myung Min will be playing Um Hong Gil himself.

A source close to Kim Myung Min commented, "He has decided on Himalayas as his next piece. We expect it to be a great film as it is based on a touching true story."

JK Film, which previously released such hits as Haeundae, Dancing Queen and Quick, will be producing the film, with director Kang Dae Gyu of Harmony in the lead.

Producers will actually be visiting Nepal in order to catch its grand snowy mountains on film.

Filming will start in October with a premiere planned for 2014.

Lee Min Jung revealed that she never received special acting tips from Lee Byung Hun.

The actress appeared at the press event for the new SBS drama ‘All About My Lover‘ held on April 2nd. During the conference, she was asked whether she got any advice from her well-known boyfriend.

She said, “I wondered what took so long for this question to be asked. He has been busy promoting his movie [G.I. Joe: Retaliation] overseas, so he was not able to give me any advice.” She sheepishly smiled and added, “I’m sorry.”

‘All About My Love’ is about a newly elected member of a conservative party named Kim Soo Young (played by Shin Ha Kyun) and a member of the progressive party Noh Min Young (played by Lee Min Jung) and the secret love they share in the midst of different political ideals. Romantic comedy fans are in for a treat with strong buzz that surrounds the casting of actors Kim Kang Woo, Lee Yeon Hee and Joo Ji Hoon in a new film titled “Eve of Marriage.”

According to reports in local news agencies, the three actors are likely to arrive at a positive decision and are currently in talks with the producers and filmmakers on the details of the project.

Further reports said “Eve of Marriage” features eight characters, men and women at home and abroad to tell an all-encompassing love story in a similar vein to “Love Actually.” The omnibus film is under the helm of Hong Ji Young, who had previously worked with Joo Ji Hoon on 2009′s “The Naked Kitchen.”

Early buzz had surrounded the casting of  Lee Yeon Hee and the possibility of casting  2PM‘s Taecyeon. The film has reportedly earned an early word-of-mouth among the industry, with actors expressing a deep interest in participating in the movie.

“Eve of Marriage” is in pre-production and is scheduled to start grinding in two months.

Recently, the actor's agency, BH Entertainment revealed a picture of the actor in LA, happily posing in front of a poster of him.

In the picture, Lee Byung Hun in in sunny LA, wearing a denim short, sung glasses, and a big and proud smile, in front of the building, with the posters of Snake Eyes, Roadblock, and Storm Shadow a placed next to each other.

The big poster is located in the building located next to the Staples Center in LA, a renown performance center, where many important events, like the Grammys, and concerts of big names, take place.

“G.I Joe Retaliation” premiere on the US on March 28th, and was a complete success topping the box office for the three days, and grossing $132,007,000 worldwide as of April 1st. The film also topped the Korean box office, selling 830,048 tickets in total.

In the movie, the actor plays the role of Storm Shadow, who was framed by Zartan, who murdered the Hard Master, and blamed Storm Shadow. He and the rest of the G.I Joes took revenge on Zartan.

Meanwhile, the actor continues with the promotion of the movie, and he has already visited countries like England, Australia, and of course South Korea.

Hollywood sci-fi action “G.I.Joe 2: Retaliation” has completed a successful invasion of the Korean box office.

The sequel to the comic-turned-movie grabbed the 1st crown after drawing in 708,267 moviegoers during the weekend of March 29 and 31, Korean Box Office Information System [KOBIS] showed Monday.

With Korean sweetheart Lee Byung-hun taking larger roles in the sequel, the blockbuster seems to be satisfying Korean action manias despite its poor reviews from critics.

Previous chart-topping film “Very Ordinary Couple” was relegated to the No. 2 spot with 361,060 audience members last weekend.

The romance, well-depicted by two young stars Lee Min-ki and Kim Min-hee, outnumbered 1 million admission in ten days of its opening.

“My Paparotti,” inspired by a true story of a man who becomes a tenor from a gangster, landed at number three after bringing its touching tale to 236,094 cinemagoers.

While the Hollywood zombie romance “Warm Bodies” ranked at No. 4 after 107,218 tickets sold, Korean film noir “New World” rounded off the top five with 104,099 admissions.

Other notable films included third top-grossing Korean film of all-time “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” U.S. western action “Django Unchained,” French costume drama “The Man Who Laughs,” Japanese animation “One Piece Film Z” and Korean arthouse film “Jiseul.”

Portraying the Jeju Uprising, one of the most tragic massacres in Korean history, "Jiseul" was the 1st Korean winner of Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Feature category.

Lee Byung Hun is well known in Korea for his drama and film roles, especially his performance as the secret agent Kim Hyun Jun in the espionage thriller "IRIS."

In America, however, he is best known for his action role as the Cobra terrorist Storm Shadow. He played the character in the film, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" starring Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller. While the film got mixed reviews, critics agreed that his performance was notable. So it was no surprise that he returned to play Storm Shadow again in "G.I. Joe Retaliation," with Dwayne Johnson. The film recently premiered in Seoul.

In a recent interview by the Huffington Post, Lee said he was excited when he found out they were doing the sequel. Although he played the role in the previous movie, he confessed he had not expected a sequel to be made.

When asked to play the role originally, he had to do some homework. He was not familiar with the cartoon G.I. Joe as it was not shown in Korea, but even though the film would be based on the cartoon, the director and producer told him not to watch it.

Instead they familiarized him with the back-story and told him to create a character. In the cartoon, Storm Shadow is the Cobra commander's bodyguard. Throughout the G.I. Joe series, he changes sides more than once, allying himself with Cobra, G.I. Joe and his blood brother Snake Eyes, played by Ray Park.

"I just learned the basic story about G.I. Joe and the characters of Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes and the history between them," said Lee in the interview. "I just got that basic type of information, and I tried to make it a creative character."

His role was fleshed out for the second movie and his character was given more emotions to express.

"I could express a lot of my emotions in part two," he told the Huffington Post.

The movie required three weeks of martial arts training and three months of weight training.

That training came in handy for the other movie he recently finished filming, in which he and Bruce Willis have several fights. He appeared as Han, an agent framed by Willis in the Red sequel, "Red 2."

For his work in the G.I. Joe movies, Lee was asked to imprint his hand and footprints in the cement before Grauman's Chinese Theater. He was one of only two Korean actors asked to do so. He told the Huffington Post that he hopes to continue to expand his career by playing varied roles.
