On November 8th, rock band X JAPAN held a live concert at Impact Arena in Thailand as a part of their first Asia tour.

Among the loud cheers of 11,000 people, leader YOSHIKI appeared in a national Thai dress and shouted, “Phom rak khun!! (I love you!!)“. The crowd also shook the venue as he performed their national folk song on the piano.

Over 300 fans gathered at the airport to welcome the band when they arrived in Thailand on the 7th. Because of this uproar, they were escorted to their hotels with several police cars surrounding them.

During a press conference that night, YOSHIKI explained that their concert was in danger from the flooding. “X JAPAN has been through many hardships, but thanks to everyone, we were able to overcome it. We received many support from around the world after the Tohoku Earthquake in March, and Thailand was a part of it. That is why we came here,” he expressed, and continued, “We want to support the society by spreading love and hope.”

YOSHIKI presented a 500,000 baht (approximately 1.27 million yen / $16,000 USD) donation and an autographed drum head to a local TV station. It was also announced that the members’ stage outfits would be put up for auction for donations.

On October 28th, rock band X JAPAN kicked off their first Asia tour at Seoul’s Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium.

Standing in front of 10,000 cheering fans, leader YOSHIKI called out, “Sarang hae yo, sarang hae yo! [I love you, I love you!]“, before playing the Korean folk song “Arirang” on his piano. Wearing a pink ‘hanbok‘ [traditional Korean clothes], YOSHIKI expressed, “We’ve dreamed about coming here for a very long time. HIDE and TAIJI also felt the same.”

A concert in Seoul was one of X JAPAN’s dearest wishes. YOSHIKI visited Korea back in September 2008 for promotions, and announced a concert for March 2009. However, the concert was canceled due to troubles with his agency. YOSHIKI commented, “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long, long time. We’ve really been through a lot.”

X JAPAN performed a total of 10 songs including their world debut single, “JADE“, their latest track, “Born To Be Free“, and the timeless ballad, “ENDLESS RAIN“.

A few days before the tour, X JAPAN’s Bejing concerts were canceled by promoters due to technical and production issues. The band was able to push past those difficulties by showing a great start to the tour. Their next stop will be at the Shanghai Grand Stage on October 30th.

SAIPAN: A Japanese rock musician who tried to hang himself after being arrested for unruly behaviour on a flight to the Mariana Islands has died in hospital, reports said Monday.

Rocker Taiji Sawada, who was best known as the former bass player with heavy metal group "X", died on Sunday when medics at Saipan's Commonwealth Health Centre followed his family's instructions and turned off his life support after he was certified brain dead, the Saipan Tribune reported.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reported that Sawada, 45, had been in intensive care since July 14 after he tried to hang himself with a bedsheet in a jail in the US-administered Pacific territory.

He had been arrested three days before for allegedly assaulting a female cabin crew attendant during a Delta Airlines flight from Tokyo to Saipan, court documents showed.

The documents, filed on the Northern Marianas District Court, said the flight attendant went to the business class section after hearing banging and found Sawada struggling with a female passenger.

The crew member said a number of male passengers helped her subdue the musician and move him to another chair but he caused another commotion, punching windows and kicking seats, as the plane prepared to descend to Saipan.

Eventually, the plane's captain ordered Sawada to be placed in physical restraints and he was arrested after the flight landed, the court documents said. No reason was given for Sawada's behaviour.

Sawada was due to appear in federal court last Friday for his detention hearing but was a no-show after his suicide attempt landed him in intensive care.

Mark Hanson, Sawada's court-appointed defense attorney said his client was "upset with himself" over his behaviour on the flight which led to his arrest, reported Marianas Variety.

Sawada enjoyed success with "X" in the late 1980s but left in 1992 citing creative differences among the band members and since then had played in various other bands, most recently with TSP which stands for "Taiji & Shu Project" according to fan websites.

The musician appeared as a guest performer at the concert of the now named "X Japan" last August, dismissing rumours of bad blood between the band members.

On March 13th, it was revealed that X JAPAN’s leader, YOSHIKI, will be auctioning off his beloved “crystal piano” to aid in the disaster relief effort for Japan.

YOSHIKI, who normally lives in Los Angeles, flew to Tokyo in order to oversee his fashion show, as well as to record songs. He felt the tremors of the earthquake in his recording studio on the 11th. After watching news reports, he was shocked by the large-scale damage across Japan, and decided that he “must do something.”

The “crystal piano” has YOSHIKI’s logo engraved on it and according to experts, “is a priceless item.” His “crystal piano” often accompanies the star during their concerts all over the world. The entire sum raised from the auction will be given to disaster relief organizations, although detailed information will follow at a later date. The musician has also expressed an intent to collect disaster relief donations through his foundation, YOSHIKI FOUNDATION AMERICA.

On Twitter, YOSHIKI reassured fans, saying, “Thank you, everyone, for worrying about me. Although there are some friends I haven’t been able to contact, I’ve been able to reach all my family members. In order to support everyone, I am planning to extend my stay in Japan. LOVE YOU…”
