On the 18th of October, the Korean government awarded BYJ the national Order of Cultural Merit for his contribution to promoting Korean culture abroad. In response to the reporter’s questions, he shared his aspirations of the future.

เมื่อวันที่ 18 ต.ค. รัฐบาลเกาหลีได้มอบเหรียญตราเกียรติยศให้แก่ BYJ สำหรับความทุ่มเทของเขาในการช่วยเผยแพร่วัฒนธรรมเกาหลีไปสู่ต่างชาติ เขาตอบคำถามของนักข่าวเกี่ยวกับความตั้งใจในอนาคต

After the decision to award BYJ with the Order of Cultural Merit, the intensity of his initial reaction came across:

หลังจากได้รับการตัดสินให้รับเหรียญตราเชิดชูด้านวัฒนธรรมดีเด่น BYJ แสดงความตั้งใจอันมุ่งมั่นต่อรางวัลอันทรงเกียรตินี้

“I intend to focus my future endeavors on my roles and duties as an actor. I’m very grateful and feel much honored to have received this award. However I think that the award should have been something for the distant future, instead of now. I will do my best to live up to this medal in the future.”

”ผมตั้งใจที่จะใช้ความพยายามให้มากขึ้นในอนาคตสำหรับบทบาทและหน้าที่ของผมในฐานะนักแสดง ผมรู้สึกขอบคุณและเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้ แต่ผมคิดว่ารางวัลนี้สำหรับอนาคตที่ยังอยู่อีกไกล ไม่ใช่สำหรับตอนนี้ ผมจะทำให้ดีที่สุดเพื่อให้คู่ควรแก่เหรียญรางวัลนี้”

There were 25 recipients of the Korean national Order of Cultural Merit. Medals are classed into: Gold Crown, Silver Grown, Precious Crown, Jeweled Crown and Flower Crown. BYJ was awarded the Flower Crown. Up until now, there were only 4 actors who have received this award. Amongst this year’s recipients, BYJ was the youngest, with the rest all 50 and over. Therefore he is absolutely the youngest.

มีผู้ได้รับรางวัลเกียรติยศนี้จากรัฐบาลเกาหลีทั้งหมด 25 ท่าน เหรียญตราแบ่งเป็นระดับชั้นดังนี้ เหรียญทอง เหรียญเงิน เหรียญล้ำค่า เหรียญอัญมณี และเหรียญบุปผา BYJ ได้รับเหรียญบุปผา จนถึงปัจจุบันนี้ มีนักแสดงเพียง 4 ท่านเท่านั้นที่ได้รับรางวัลอันทรงเกียรตินี้ ในบรรดาผู้ที่ได้รับรางวัลในปีนี้ BYJ มีอายุน้อยที่สุด ที่เหลือล้วนอยู่ในวัย 50 ปีขึ้นไป เขาจึงกลายเป็นผู้รับรางวัลที่อายุน้อยที่สุด

BYJ was awarded the honor as he has continuously devoted himself and his work to promote Korean culture to the world though dramas such as Winter Sonata.

BYJ ได้รับรางวัลอันทรงเกียรตินี้จากการอุทิศตัวอย่างต่อเนื่องมาตลอด และจากผลงานของเขาที่ช่วยเผยแพร่วัฒนธรรมเกาหลีไปสู่สายตาชาวโลกผ่านทางละคร อย่างเช่น Winter Sonata

Q: “It is not easy for you to shoulder the responsibilities that are outside of being an actor at a young age, what is your understanding of this? “

Q: ไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายเลยสำหรับคุณที่จะแบกรับภาระนี้เอาไว้ในขณะที่เป็นนักแสดงที่อายุน้อยขนาดนี้ คุณคิดว่ายังไง

BYJ: “I’m still young, which has many drawbacks and I feel a great deal of responsibility. However I take it as a word of encouragement from everyone, “working harder in the future”. I believe that as an actor, a public figure, I need to further my thinking in terms of what I can achieve. As there are certain levels of expectation of me out there from many people, I feel this alone bears a great deal of responsibility.”

BYJ: ผมอายุยังน้อย ซึ่งเป็นข้อเสียเปรียบครับ และผมรู้สึกได้ถึงภาระอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้ แต่ผมจะถือเป็นการให้กำลังใจจากทุกคนครับ “ต้องทำงานให้หนักขึ้นในอนาคต” ผมเชื่อว่าในฐานะนักแสดง คนของประชาชน ผมจะต้องคิดให้หนักขึ้นว่าจะทำสิ่งใดได้บ้าง มีความคาดหวังในตัวผมจากผู้คนมากมาย ผมรู้สึกว่าต้องแบกรับภาระอันยิ่งใหญ่เอาไว้ครับ

On the 18th of October, the ceremony was held at “Cheongju Arts Center” in Chungcheong which is situated in the center of South Korea. There were scenes where BYJ was being considerate by deferring to his seniors who received their awards first. He also considered the feelings of the others by declining to have a press conference.

เมื่อวันที่ 18 ต.ค. พิธีมอบรางวัลจัดขึ้นที่ “หอศิลป์เชิงจู” ในชุนเชิน ซึ่งอยู่ตอนกลางของประเทศเกาหลีใต้ BYJ รู้สึกห่วงใยต่อความรู้สึกของบรรดารุ่นพี่ๆ ที่รับรางวัลก่อนหน้าเขา เขาจึงปฏิเสธการจัดแถลงข่าว

On stage, when the medal was pinned to his chest by the minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, BYJ was blushing and appeared shy. 500 fans from Japan took over the entire second level, cheering him on and clapping. BYJ smiled bashfully and showed forth his thankfulness by waving.

บนเวทีตอนที่เหรียญตราถูกประดับบนอกเสื้อของเขาโดยรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงวัฒนธรรมฯ BYJ หน้าแดงด้วยความเขินอาย แฟนๆ จากญี่ปุ่น 500 คนจับจองพื้นที่บนชั้น 2 ของสถานที่จัดงาน พากันส่งเสียงเชียร์และปรบมือให้เขา BYJ ยิ้มอายๆ และแสดงความขอบคุณด้วยการโบกมือให้

His fans said “His great contribution to the exchange between Japan and South Korea, receiving the award goes without saying”. “This award is long overdue”. “He has achieved what the politicians of Japan and South Korea could not even achieve in 100 years.”

แฟนๆ ของเขากล่าวว่า “เพราะความทุ่มเทของเขาในการแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมระหว่างญี่ปุ่นกับเกาหลี รางวัลนี้จึงสมควรมอบให้เขาโดยไม่มีข้อกังขา” “รางวัลนี้มอบให้ช้าเกินไปด้วยซ้ำ” “เขาทำในสิ่งที่นักการเมืองญี่ปุ่นและเกาหลีใต้ทำไม่สำเร็จมานานนับร้อยปี”

After broadcasting Winter Sonata, Hallyu has swept across Japan over the last 5 years. With BYJ’s explosive popularity, his every word and deed could change the direction / movement of Hallyu. Hallyu has surely rooted in Japan and BYJ’s popularity continues unabated.

หลังจากละครเรื่อง Winter Sonata ออกอากาศไป คลื่นเกาหลีก็ถาโถมเข้าสู่ญี่ปุ่นตลอด 5 ปีที่ผ่านมา ความโด่งดังเป็นพลุแตกของ BYJ ทุกคำพูดและการกระทำของเขาเป็นตัวกำหนดทิศทางของกระแสเกาหลีฟีเวอร์ ซึ่งหยั่งรากลึกในญี่ปุ่น และความดังของ BYJ ก็แรงอย่างต่อเนื่อง

No matter if it’s “Winter Sonata”, “First Love”, “Did we really love” or “Hotelier” where BYJ has devoted his performances, the outstanding works of South Korea were clearly reflected though these TV dramas, at the same time further strengthening Hallyu in Japan.

Given the high social status of film stars in Korea, critics were not kind to BYJ, who has only made limited films. However he who has opened the new Japanese and South Korean historical channels, is standing in the frontline of popular culture (or pop culture) and TV dramas.

ถึงจะยืนอยู่ในจุดสูงสุดของวงการดาราในเกาหลี แต่เหล่านักวิจารณ์ไม่เคยชื่นชมยินดีในตัว BYJ ซึ่งมีงานแสดงที่ค่อนข้างจำกัด แต่เขาคือผู้ที่เปิดประวัติศาสตร์หน้าใหม่ให้แก่ญี่ปุ่นและเกาหลีใต้ เขาคือผู้ที่ยืนอยู่แถวหน้าของวัฒนธรรมป๊อบและวงการละครทีวี

What is more important is that for the past 5 years, BYJ has not disappointed his fans in his acting or his conduct.

ที่สำคัญยิ่งกว่านั้นก็คือตลอด 5 ปีที่ผ่านมา BYJ ไม่เคยทำให้แฟนๆ ของเขาผิดหวังในการแสดงและผลงานของเขา

Q: “It’s been 5 years since the hit TV drama of “Winter Sonata”. From the very start you stated that your wish is to advocate mutual exchanges within Asia, not only Hallyu,”

Q: นาน 5 ปีแล้วนับตั้งแต่ละครยอดฮิตเรื่อง Winter Sonata ตั้งแต่เริ่มแรกคุณก็ย้ำมาตลอดว่าหวังให้มีการแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมกันทั่วทั้งเอเชีย ไม่ใช่เป็นเพียงกระแสคลั่งเกาหลีเท่านั้น

BYJ: “Personally, I don’t like the word of Hallyu. I would hope to use the phrase “Asian wave” widely in order to replace Hallyu. We should not see Hallyu as a unilateral temporary cultural phenomenon which could extinguish. We need to take Asian culture to the next level, allowing mutual cooperation. I hope to see Asia as one cultural community, growing and prospering.”

BYJ: โดยส่วนตัวแล้วผมไม่ชอบคำว่า กระแสคลั่งเกาหลี (Hallyu) เลย ผมอยากให้ใช้คำว่า “กระแสคลั่งเอเชีย” มาแทนมากกว่า เราไม่ควรเห็นว่ามันเป็นเพียงปรากฏการณ์ชั่วครั้งชั่วคราวที่อีกไม่นานก็จะจางหายไป เราควรพาวัฒนธรรมเอเชียไปให้ไกลกว่านั้น เป็นการร่วมมือกันจากทุกฝ่าย ผมหวังจะได้เห็นเอเชียมีวัฒนธรรมเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน เติบโตและรุ่งเรืองไปพร้อมๆ กัน

Q: “What is the dream of taking Asia to the world stage?”

Q: อะไรคือความฝันในการนำพาเอเชียไปสู่เวทีโลก

BYJ: “As an actor, I would like to create outstanding work. Actors, producers and the people, who are in the frontline of popular culture, need to consider what sort of production would overcome adversity and allow us to richen our outstanding cultures together. Then the end result of these rich outstanding cultures of Asia would be a worthy opponent to Hollywood or European culture in order for us to advance in the world market.”

BYJ: ในฐานะนักแสดงผมอยากสร้างผลงานดีๆ ทั้งนักแสดง ผู้กำกับ และผู้คนที่อยู่แถวหน้าของวัฒนธรรมป๊อบ จำเป็นต้องไตร่ตรองให้ดีว่าควรสร้างงานแบบไหนเพื่อช่วยประชาสัมพันธ์และทำให้เราเกิดความเข้าใจอันดียิ่งขึ้นด้านวัฒนธรรมร่วมกัน แล้วผลลัพธ์ของความเข้าใจอันดีกันนี่เอง จะทำให้เอเชียสู้กับวัฒนธรรมฮอลีวู้ดและยุโรปได้ เพื่อเราจะได้ก้าวต่อไปสู่ตลาดโลก

Q: “Do you have something in mind that you really hope to achieve, now this award has given you the opportunity to do so?”

Q: คุณมีอะไรในใจมั้ยที่หวังว่าจะทำต่อไป ตอนนี้รางวัลนี้เปิดโอกาสให้คุณแล้ว

BYJ: “I would like to introduce more Korean histories and traditional culture. Many people visited South Korea after watching my work. Simultaneously I would like to share the excellence of Korean tradition and its culture to the Japanese people. By all means also provide a chance to introduce Japanese traditions and culture to the Korean people. I will try my best to serve as a bridge to enliven the cultural exchange between both countries.”

BYJ: ผมอยากแนะนำประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรมเกาหลีให้เป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้น หลายคนมาเยือนเกาหลีใต้หลังจากได้ดูละครของผม แต่ผมก็อยากแบ่งปันวัฒนธรรมที่ดีงามของเกาหลีไปสู่แฟนๆ ชาวญี่ปุ่นด้วย แล้วก็ถือโอกาสแนะนำวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นสู่คนเกาหลีเช่นกัน ผมจะพยายามอย่างดีที่สุดในการเป็นสะพานเชื่อมสัมพันธ์เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมระหว่าง 2 ประเทศ

BYJ is currently writing a travel book introducing the “Beauty of Korea”. He intends to travel across South Korea with his camera, compiling the sections repeatly as he goes. There will be 2 volumes in the travel guide book complimenting a photo album and a self written guide book. BYJ is at a preparatory stage. This summer he collected all the suggestions and tentative plans that were recommended by his families. “The beautiful scenery in Korea that you know”. “You can tell me anything everything about Korea”. Here, one can see his intentions in promoting cultural exchanges mutually.

ตอนนี้ BYJ กำลังเขียนหนังสือท่องเที่ยวเพื่อแนะนำความงดงามของเกาหลี เขาตั้งใจที่จะท่องเที่ยวไปทั่วเกาหลีใต้พร้อมกล้องของเขา แล้วกลับมานำเสนอสิ่งที่เขาพบเห็นมา หนังสือชุดนี้จะมี 2 เล่ม คืออัลบั้มภาพและคู่มือท่องเที่ยวที่เขาเขียนเอง ตอนนี้ BYJ กำลังอยู่ในขั้นตอนการเตรียมงาน เมื่อฤดูร้อนที่ผ่านมาเขาได้รวบรวมข้อเสนอแนะที่แฟนๆ ของเขาส่งเข้ามา ในหัวข้อ “สถานที่สวยงามในเกาหลีที่คุณรู้จัก” “ช่วยบอกอะไรผมก็ได้เกี่ยวกับเกาหลี” เราคงได้เห็นแล้วถึงความตั้งใจของเขาในการเผยแพร่แลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรม

Q: “Which part have you concentrated on more while in the making of the travel guide book?”

Q: ส่วนไหนที่คุณเน้นเป็นพิเศษในการทำคู่มือท่องเที่ยวครั้งนี้

BYJ: “I started this project by hoping to introduce and photograph all the beautiful sights that my homeland has to offer to the people aboard. It is now still in the planning stage. I have been to a few places to conduct some prep work with my staff. We would like to put our heart and soul into producing a good book after careful deliberation amidst many worries. Staffs facilitate the exchange of ideas and enthusiasm in the planning session of the discussions, including ideas and suggestions from the families. “

BYJ: ผมเริ่มโครงการนี้ด้วยความหวังว่าจะแนะนำและถ่ายภาพสถานที่สวยๆ ในบ้านเกิดของผมเพื่อนำเสนอต่อผู้คนทั่วโลก ตอนนี้ยังอยู่ในขั้นตอนวางแผนงาน มีบางที่ๆ ผมได้ไปสำรวจมาแล้วพร้อมกับทีมงาน เราอยากทุ่มเททั้งจิตใจและวิญญาณในการผลิตหนังสือที่ดี หลังจากที่ตั้งใจกันอย่างมุ่งมั่นทั้งๆ ที่มีเรื่องให้กังวลมากมาย ทีมงานแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นกันอย่างกระตือรือร้นในการประชุมวางแผนงาน รวมทั้งความคิดเห็นจากครอบครัวของเราด้วย

It is said that at the beginning of October, BYJ visited and stayed at the town of Hahoe in Andong, where the town preserved the housing architecture and town structure from the Joseon Dynasty.

ว่ากันว่าเมื่อต้นเดือนตุลาคม BYJ ได้ไปเยือนหมู่บ้านฮาโฮที่อันดงและพักค้างคืนด้วย เมืองนี้มีบ้านโบราณและสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยราชวงศ์โชซอน

Q: "Why rigidly adhering to history and traditions?"

Q: ทำไมถึงเน้นไปที่ประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรมเก่าแก่

BYJ: "The present has evolved from the past. Without the present, there won't be future. I need to keep that in mind continuously on the co-sharing approach to the outstanding cultures. If we could spread the network and connections, maintaining the mutual exchange, this would go a long way to promoting the Asian wave to the world."

BYJ: ปัจจุบันนั้นสืบเนื่องมาจากอดีต ถ้าไม่มีปัจจุบัน ก็ย่อมไม่มีอนาคต ผมคอยเตือนตัวเองแบบนั้นอยู่เสมอจึงพยายามแบ่งปันวัฒนธรรมอันดีงาม ถ้าเราขยายเครือข่ายและเชื่อมต่อกัน ทำให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนกันอย่างต่อเนื่อง เราจะสามารถเผยแพร่ความเป็นเอเชียไปสู่สายตาชาวโลกได้อีกยาวไกล

Starting from 2010 for 3 years, BYJ was appointed as the promotional Ambassador of Korea Tourism. In recent years, tourism revenue in Korea is disproportionately low. The government is anticipating that Bae Yong Joon is the man to spearhead their new tourism campaign.

เริ่มจากปี 2010 ต่อเนื่องไปอีก 3 ปี BYJ ได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้เป็นทูตท่องเที่ยวของเกาหลี ช่วงหลายปีมานี้การท่องเที่ยวของเกาหลีซบเซาลง รัฐบาลจึงคาดหวังว่า เบยงจุนคือผู้ที่จะช่วยเผยแพร่แคมเปญท่องเที่ยวตัวใหม่

On the other hand, it was a matter of concern that BYJ will be restricted his acting as his work load increases as a public figure. For example, movie roles with artistic performances of adult scenes such as in “Untold Scandal” will not be suitable for an “Ambassador” figurehead. Trailing him everywhere he goes, his privacy is likely to be even more restricted than now.

ในทางกลับกัน BYJ คงต้องเข้มงวดกับบทบาทการแสดงของเขามากยิ่งขึ้น ซึ่งถือเป็นภาระหนักสำหรับเขาในการรักษาภาพของบุคคลสาธารณะ ตัวอย่างเช่นบทบาทแบบในหนังเรื่อง “Untold Scandal” คงไม่เหมาะกับภาพลักษณ์ของ “ท่านทูต” สักเท่าไหร่ เขาต้องถูกผู้คนติดตามไปทุกที่ จากนี้ไปความเป็นส่วนตัวของเขาคงยิ่งถูกคุมเข้มมากขึ้นกว่าเดิม

Given that he is a person who would try to do his very best persistently, to complete what he aught to do. So don’t let any groundless fears get to you. But we hope to see more of his outstanding work as an actor. Fighting!
