...Hallyu began roughly 12 years ago when the rest of Asia discovered Korean soap operas. One of the breakthrough dramas was a series 'Winter Sonata' starring Choi Ji-woo & Bae Young-Joon. After that, more Korean dramas saw their way to foreign shores and Korean films and music started to follow suit. Korean marketing people started to see a Korea-centric trend. They dubbed this flow "The Korean Wave" or Hallyu....

Hong Kong news, 30 April – Korean star Jang Keun Suk is in Hong Kong recently to prepare for his “2011 Jang Keun Suk The Cri Show HK” to be held tonight. Yesterday, JKS appeared at Kwun Tong for promotion and attracted 800 fans who were there to catch a glimpse of their idol. JKS was very friendly, smiling and waving at fans and blowing them kisses, which made fans scream. During the ice-breaking ceremony, he was mischievous and smashed the ice to bits.
“2011 Jang Keun Suk The Cri Show HK” will be held tonight at Hong Kong International Trade and Conventional Centre. JKS was in Hong Kong two days ago for preparation and promotion, and attended the press conference yesterday at apm Kwun Tong, which attracted 800 fans in support of their idol. In a gray suit and with his hair dyed gold, screams erupted the moment Jang Keun Suk appeared. He greeted fans in Cantonese and also waved at fans on the second and third floor.
The organisers arranged an ice-breaking ceremony for JKS and his agent company to signify his entry to the Chinese market. At first, JKS hit the ice gently and nothing happened. The next second, the ‘A’ in “Asia” fell over and gave him a little scare. It then evoked his playfulness and he hit the other letters off to the floor, even including small bits of ice and thus successfully concluding the ceremony. When he received the new iPad2 given by his company’s senior management, JKS cried out in surprise. Fans prepared a cake for JKS, who executed the same pose as his mini-figurine on the cake for the media to take photographs. In addition, JKS secretly put a letter from the cake into his mouth but maybe because it did not taste nice, so he put it back on the cake again after two licks. It was quite funny. Fans had also contributed HK$15,000 to Red Cross, which made him very touched.
This is JKS’ third time to Hong Kong. He said that last year, due to fans’ extreme enthusiasm, he could only stay in the hotel and not go out sight-seeing, so he hopes that he can see Hong Kong’s night scenery. But he has already had a taste of his favourite dishes. In mid-April, he had officially signed an exclusive contract with HS Media and on Wed 27 April, he has released his single album “Let me cry” which sold 16,000 copies on its first day and surpassed Girls Generation’s new album to top Oricon sales chart that day. JKS said, “Very happy about the good results, and thanks very much to fans’ support. I hope to have more development in the Greater China region.”
The transformation from an actor to a singer has made JKS feel excited and nervous. He feels that being a singer is a big challenge. When asked what message he has for Hong Kong fans, JKS said with a laugh that he always received much warm support from fans when he comes to Hong Kong, and he feels excited when he hears fans call his name. JKS said that tonight is not only a fans meeting, and there will be many special performances but he refuses to divulge more. Fans will have to come for the performance to find out. He will also sing his new song “Let me cry”. The entire press conference lasted 20 minutes and before JKS left, he told fans in English, “Bye bye, see you tomorrow.

[NEWS]Vic Zhou and Vivian Hsu’s Upcoming Movie Cohabiting with Fashion Releases First Stills.
cr:koalasplayground
Vic Zhou (Zai Zai) is currently in Beijing filming a modern TW/C collaboration movie called Cohabiting with Fashion, co-starring Vivian Hsu and HK-actor Alan Tam. Zai Zai plays a white collar employee of a fashion company, and Vivian is a typical hard-working average girl. The movie supposedly depicts how modern young people work hard to make their dreams come true, fall in love, and so on and so forth. Not very original or compelling stuff, but it’s a quick shoot and allows Zai Zai to have some recovery from his grueling year long shoot for his upcoming drama The Other Shore 1945.
After Zai Zai wraps this movie in June, he’s back to Taiwan to make his movie with Ella Chen called Destiny’s Pair. And after that movie wraps, he’s back to China in late August when the mega-blockbuster period epic The Yang’s Clan movie begins filming. Poor Zai Zai is working so hard, but he looks healthier and I prefer him working rather than brooding.
Supposedly Raymond Lam has just been matched to be the Fifth Yang’s bro, and since we know Wu Zun is Sixth brother and Louis Koo is Big Brother, I still contend Zai Zai would make the perfect Fourth brother. Netizens are having loads of fun matching the confirmed actors to the brothers. It’s totally cosplaying our favorite actors.

[NEWS]Takeuchi Yuko to make Hollywood debut with the film, “HAYABUSA”
cr:allkpop
It was announced today that actress Takeuchi Yuko will be starring in the upcoming film “HAYABUSA“, produced by the Hollywood movie studio, 20th Century Fox.
The film is based on the true story of the Japanese unmanned spacecraft “Hayabusa”, which returned to Earth last June after 7 years in space. The challenges and struggles of the project will be told in conjunction with the story of Takeuchi’s character, a research staff working at the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Veteran actor Nishida Toshiyuki joins her in the film as her boss.
Takeuchi told the press, “Just as the return of ‘Hayabusa’ after 7 years moved many people, I would be happy if this (film) can become the dream and hope of Japan. ”
Nishida added, “There is a widespread negative image about Japan (right now) because of the earthquake and nuclear problems, so I want people to remember through this film that Japan has world leading scientific technology… I want Japan to recall last year’s touching emotions and gain back (our) honor and pride.”
“Hayabusa” will be directed by Tsutsumi Yukihiko, whose past works include “BECK” and “20th Century Boys“. Filming will start in May, with the expected release date on October 1st.

[NEWS]Avex Entertainment releases statement on JYJ's charity concert

We previously reported that JYJ was to hold a charity concert for Japan’s earthquake victims. However, the venue’s management revoked JYJ's concert permit, thus canceling the charity concert. JYJ’s former management agency in Japan, Avex Entertainment, released a statement on this issue.
To Whom It May Concern
Avex Group Holdings Inc.
Concerning the Charity Event by JUNSU/JEJUNG/YUCHUN
There was an announcement on April 5th this year, that JUNSU/JEJUNG/YUCHUN (exclusive artists of our company, hereinafter named “JJY”) will hold a charity support event (hereinafter called “this event”) for the Tohoku Kanto Earthquake Disaster. This event was planned without receiving any permission from our company, which holds the exclusive management rights for JJY in Japan.
Our company has protested multiple times to the organizer ZAK Corporation and JJY’s Korean management company, C-JeS Entertainment. However, they have not listened to our protests and forced through with the ticket sales unilaterally.
Concerning our company’s above handlings, we have received many comments and requests from JJY fans that this event should push through. Or, that since the sole purpose is for charity, we should especially dissolve the exclusive contract. On the other hand, we have received protests from multiple antisocial forces. Furthermore, we were under pressure that our president should be harmed.
However, our company holds the exclusive rights for JJY’s activities in Japan, and we have just taken actions for the infringement rightfully and properly. Additionally, as we have announced in our press release of September 16 last year, there remains to be compliance problems such as the criminal record of the President of C-JeS in assaulting/blackmailing an artist (of whom he was in charge of). Moreover, the exclusive contract declaratory judgment is still going on in Korea. Therefore, we have no other choice than to suspend the activities of JJY until these are settled.
In spite of the above circumstances, ZAK Corp and C-JeS have in their joint names, and, as ZAK Corp by itself, have filed two provisional dispositions against our company to the Tokyo District Court, claiming that our company’s handlings have no legitimate basis. Hereafter, our company will contend our legitimacy at the judicature. Our company does not think that the JJY members themselves are aware of everything that is happening.
Our company wishes that the JYJ members will understand the situation correctly and the real intention of our company. Additionally, as we have been consistently commenting, our company long for the day where the compliance and legal problems in Korea will be resolved, and that our company can once again manages JJY. Furthermore, to resume the artists’ activities as Tohoshinki, we will do our best in the future.
For the fans who support JJY, we understand that we are making all of you worry. We appreciate your kind understanding on this matter.

[News] Moon Chae-won leader cast in 'The Princess’s Man (공주의 남자)' KBS new drama.
Cr. - javabeans
Moon Chae-won has been cast in her next drama, titled 'The Princess’s Man'.
The Princess’s Man is being called a “Joson-era Romeo and Juliet” and will be a fusion sageuk; Moon takes the lead role as Princess Lee Se-ryung, daughter to Grand Prince Su-yang (who was the second son of King Sejong the Great). She falls in love with the son of her father’s enemy, making for a “tragic love story.”
Princess Se-ryung is bold, inquisitive, determined — a set of characteristics not common or idealized in the ladies of Joseon aristocracy — but encounters a number of hardships because of her father’s ambition to become king. Historically, Su-yang (or Sejo) became the seventh king of Joseon, but in this drama he hasn’t yet secured the throne and plots to take the crown from his nephew Dan-jong. Naturally this meets with resistance from Dan-jong’s supporters, and therefore Su-yang is out to eliminate his opposition, which includes Kim Jong-seo, the father of Se-ryung’s beloved.
It’s an interesting way to incorporate a familiar and powerful love story into the crux of a sageuk drama, and I’m curious to see how it works out. Sageuks do include romantic plots, sometimes even feature them as prominent storylines, but historically speaking they’re more about the political machinations and power plays surrounding a monarch at its core, and the dynamics of the court. It’s really mostly been in recent years that romance has become such a strong player, and more so in the fusion series (Hong Gil Dong, Iljimae, Chuno).
This’ll be Moon’s second sageuk series, but third sageuk project overall; she first burst onto the scene as the gisaeng who fell for Moon Geun-young (in boy guise) in Painter of the Wind (see below), and has signed up for an upcoming movie titled Bow: Ultimate Weapon (which stars Park Hae-il and Ryu Seung-ryong).
The Princess’s Man is being planned for 24 episodes and takes to airwaves after Romance Town ends in July, and will be a Wednesday-Thursday KBS drama. Now, who’ll they cast as her Romeo? That’s the big question.
