Korean actor Lee Sun-gyun, 36, won the award for best male actor at the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Grand Canaria in Spain late last month.

According to TPS Company, producer of the film “Paju,” in which Lee starred, the film festival in Spain awarded Lee the best male actor for his restrained tone of acting which well expressed the agony of a man who has fallen in love with his wife’s sister.

The International Film Festival of Las Palmas, first held in 2000, has long made efforts to carve out a highly creative and original film event with the active participation of local directors, critics, scenario writers, actors and actresses.

The Korean film “Paju” by award-winning director Park Chan-wook was the only Korean film to participate in the competitive section. A total of 14 films competed.

Lee, who starred in the film “Paju” in 2009 and has recently completed the shooting of the popular Korean drama “Pasta” early this year, is currently taking a break from acting. The latest award is the first of its kind that Lee has won in the overseas film festival.

“Paju” has received acclaim from both home and abroad since its debut at the Pusan International Film Festival in 2009. It was the opener of the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January this year and won a Special Jury Prize at the Deauville Asian Film Festival in France which was held in March 2009. “Paju” will also compete in the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival in New York from Apr. 21 to May 2.
