[Interview] Pianist Yiruma given a second life as composer.

[Interview] Pianist Yiruma given a second life as composer.
Cr. - Joongang Ilbo

Yiruma, a famous New Age pianist, has now become successful in his new career as a composer.

While world pianists such as Andre Gagnon, Yuhki Kuramoto and Steve Barakatt were making hits in the early 2000s, a young pianist in his 20s brought fresh air to the industry.

Leaving behind the first chapter of his career, he is now interested in making his own music.

By creating songs for hot K-pop singers such as Baek Ji-young and 2AM, the 35-year-old had a fairly good start. The JoongAng Ilbo met the talented man, happy with his second life.

기사 이미지

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Q. How did you step into the K-pop industry?

A. I actually majored in composition, but I haven’t had any opportunities to write songs before as I have been more recognized as a pianist. I had difficult times because people in Korea sometimes looked down on me since I haven’t written any songs that were huge hits. Previously, I did write several K-pop songs, but my pieces bloomed after working on Baek Ji-young’s “I Hate It” and 2AM’s “Coming to Me.” I’ve been hearing comments that all my creations sound like classical music, and now I have overcome my weakness. Recently, I’m working with producer 2Face on a project team called “Mind Tailor,” and I’m having fun.

What’s so interesting about K-pop music? What do you think of New Age music losing its popularity among people?

First of all, K-pop is totally different from what I used to work on. I’ve always thought that a musician should play something that many audiences want to hear, and popular music does appeal to the majority of people. But dealing with singers and producers, and keeping the deadline can be pretty tough.

Trends change so fast nowadays. Due to developments in technology, from some point, people began to make their own music at home even without audio-mastering. Then, the quality of piano music got poorer and the New Age songs became a cliche. Several years ago, I was worried about the boundary between amateurs and professionals getting more unclear, but I think professionals must thank amateurs since we can develop our craft in order to win over them. Overall, I feel alright because the fans are still there.

As your tissue brand “Mon Dou Dou” has marked 10 billion won ($8.98 million) in sales, you are planning to build a facility for single moms. Can you explain the idea in more detail? How many people will the facility accommodate?

I first started the business to gather donations, but it got much bigger than I expected. As the company produces wet wipes, I thought helping out single mothers would be meaningful. When the firm constructs a building after a land purchase, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, will handle the facility management supported by the Small and Medium Business Administration.

I will be able to know the exact number that we can allow by next month. I hope to provide comfort to as many as possible. Along the accommodation area, the company will also build a warehouse right beside it and let single moms have jobs there. They need places to stay and we also need employees. It’s a win-win.

What will be the fate of Park Shi Hoo and the woman who is accusing him of rape?

** Was there Traces of Drugs in the Soju?

Woman B had known K, Park Shi Hoo's friend. B introduced K to woman A, the woman accusing Park Shi Hoo of rape, after he requested for an introduction. A and K kept in touch constantly and built up their friendly relationship.

On February 14, K called A out for drinks with Park Shi Hoo. Park Shi Hoo also showed up to the bar after K told him there is somebody he should meet.

Like Us on Facebook

After meeting at a café, they moved to a bar with a private room to drink after being noticed by too many civilians. A appeared at the bar to meet Park Shi Hoo and K later on. The time the three met at the bar is approximately 11PM on the night of February 14. Since Park Shi Hoo is not strong with alcohol and K had a minor surgery coming up, they ordered soju mixed with fruit vinegar. They shared 2 bottles of the fruit soju.

The time they leave the bar is approximately 1:50AM February 15. They end up going to Park Shi Hoo's place. All three get out of the car in the underground parking at his apartment. They fall asleep at Park Shi Hoo's place sometime between 2:10~2:20AM.

A left Park Shi Hoo's place on February 15, at 3PM. A has been captured by security cameras surrounding Park Shi Hoo's place. K left before A, at around 1PM. Later on, K and A communicate through Kakaotalk messaging and speak about what happened the night before. After A spoke with woman B about what happened, A decides to go to the police on February 15 to report that she had been raped. The police guided her to a women's center to receive blood and urine tests.

At the bar on February 14, three people shared 2 bottles but A claims to have lost consciousness on the way to Park Shi Hoo's place. The police have collected A's hair, blood and urine to test for any traces of drugs. As a response, representatives of Park Shi Hoo provided videos of A walking out of the bar completely fine. However, 10 or 20 minutes after they left the bar, the security cameras at Park Shi Hoo's place show K carrying A on his back. A also stated, "There is no way I could get drunk after sharing only 2 bottles of soju" and "I realized I was raped when I woke up."

Tests only showed traces of Park Shi Hoo's DNA but no drugs. However, representatives of A stated, "It has been reported that date rape drugs leave the body after 24 hours have passed" and "We can't forget about the possibility of drugs since A claims she is a heavy drinker."

** Rumors of A Being a Scam Artist?

The rumors about A trying to scam Park Shi Hoo began to spread after representatives of Park Shi Hoo released more conversations shared over Kakaotalk messaging. A news media source revealed that A had previously done the same thing to a man. A had told a man "I think I'm pregnant" and "Take responsibility" to a man she had sexual intercourse with.

Park Shi Hoo's representatives claimed that A is only after his money since it is ridiculous to suspect signs of pregnancy not even 24 hours after sexual intercourse. However, A's representatives stated that A had brought up pregnancy in her conversation with K while she was with the police when she spoke about signs of a pregnancy since they suggested her to keep a natural conversation going back and forth.

Also, it has been reported by representatives of Park Shi Hoo that A requested a very large amount of money to settle the case. Park Shi Hoo offered $100,000 but A requested more, which is when the possibility of a settlement ended.

** Did Something Happen Between Park Shi Hoo and the CEO of his Previous Agency?

In a Kakaotalk conversation, woman B had stated "Hold on, I'm talking to the CEO of Park Shi Hoo's previous agency about how to bring down Park Shi Hoo", "Park Shi Hoo will be begging on his knees so go to the police for now" and "The CEO of Park Shi Hoo's previous agency is really mad after being betrayed by Park Shi Hoo so we'll work with him to bring down Park Shi Hoo".

Representatives of Park Shi Hoo filed another lawsuit against the CEO of Eyagi Entertainment, Park Shi Hoo's previous entertainment agency. Park Shi Hoo's representatives stated that they have evidence that will be a deciding factor in the case.

The police are remaining silent after every little detail is made public and exaggerated.

** Park Shi Hoo's Career, Is it the End of it All?

If the court says Park Shi Hoo is innocent, he will be able to sue A for false accusation and slander. On the other hand, if the court says he is guilty of rape, he will not be able to avoid lawful punishment.

Both Park Shi Hoo and woman A have lost a lot throughout this process. Even if Park Shi Hoo is proven to be innocent, countless people will relate his name to the rape case and he might even be forced to end his acting career. Woman A will also be negatively affected regardless of the results since the details of her life have all been released to the public. The results of this case will decide what their fate holds.

[News] Fangirling It With the Band – Kdrama style.
Cr. - kdramastars

Kdramas provide a great opportunity to hang out with the band as several recent dramas focus on musicians. And K-band-dramas deliver some great soundtracks.

One reason the music dramas work so well is that producers often recruit musicians, who already know their way around a stage, to play fictional band members. The result is a sound fans can relate to.

The latest band-focused drama, "Shut Up Flower Boy Band," featured a fictional band called Eye Candy. The band consisted of the teens their teachers have written off as troublemakers and losers. To make things worse, the school they attend shuts down and the raucous rockers are transferred to a more conservative, elite school where they are immediately pegged for expulsion.

But a tragic death sets rock and roll destiny in motion. The band members must decide if music is more important than anything else.

The band created for this series has a great retro rock sound, heightened by the gruff voice of model-turned-actor Sung Joon. Before playing Kwon Ji Hyuk, he did not have much singing experience but he proceeded to rock the role. Kim Myung Soo played band member Lee Hyung Joo. Kim Myung Soo, a member of the group Infinite was already well known for his synchronized dancing and pretty face. Singer Lee Min Ki also had a cameo appearance, adding dramatic flair to his episodes.

"Shut Up Flower Boy Band" is an interesting series because it offers a more realistic look at the kinds of problems bands really face. Making it is often only the beginning.

http://korea.tlcthai.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/%EB%AC%B4%EC%A0%9C-1-600x409.jpg

However, the soundtrack for the film, which featured Eye Candy's songs, effortlessly scored on many bias lists. While working on the song, "Jaywalking," music director Lee Jae Hak was pleasantly surprised by the quality of Sung Joon's singing.

"He is really good," said Lee. The show served as his band audition.

Another fun drama band was Take Care My Bus in "Mary Stayed Out All Night" with Jang Geun Suk singing the ballad, "I Will Promise You."

The singer and guitarist also played the lead musician in A.N.JELL, the band featured in the series "You're Beautiful." Other talented band members were Lee Hong Ki of FT Island, Jung Yung Hwa of CNBLUE and singer Park Shin Hye. Each of them gets a chance to sing on the OST. Their sound was so successful that after the series ended, fans clamored to see the fictional band perform.

Jung also took a second turn as a musician in "Heartstrings," in which his band, known as The Stupid, mixes metal rock riffs with traditional Korean instruments.

Other dramas that feature bands are "Dream High," "Dream High 2," "I Am Legend," "What's Up," and "The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry."

[News] Lee Byung Hun Interviewed by American News Website.

[News] Lee Byung Hun Interviewed by American News Website.
Cr. - soompi

Lee Byung Hun is well known in Korea for his drama and film roles, especially his performance as the secret agent Kim Hyun Jun in the espionage thriller "IRIS."

In America, however, he is best known for his action role as the Cobra terrorist Storm Shadow. He played the character in the film, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" starring Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller. While the film got mixed reviews, critics agreed that his performance was notable. So it was no surprise that he returned to play Storm Shadow again in "G.I. Joe Retaliation," with Dwayne Johnson. The film recently premiered in Seoul.

In a recent interview by the Huffington Post, Lee said he was excited when he found out they were doing the sequel. Although he played the role in the previous movie, he confessed he had not expected a sequel to be made.

When asked to play the role originally, he had to do some homework. He was not familiar with the cartoon G.I. Joe as it was not shown in Korea, but even though the film would be based on the cartoon, the director and producer told him not to watch it.

Instead they familiarized him with the back-story and told him to create a character. In the cartoon, Storm Shadow is the Cobra commander's bodyguard. Throughout the G.I. Joe series, he changes sides more than once, allying himself with Cobra, G.I. Joe and his blood brother Snake Eyes, played by Ray Park.

"I just learned the basic story about G.I. Joe and the characters of Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes and the history between them," said Lee in the interview. "I just got that basic type of information, and I tried to make it a creative character."

His role was fleshed out for the second movie and his character was given more emotions to express.

"I could express a lot of my emotions in part two," he told the Huffington Post.

The movie required three weeks of martial arts training and three months of weight training.

That training came in handy for the other movie he recently finished filming, in which he and Bruce Willis have several fights. He appeared as Han, an agent framed by Willis in the Red sequel, "Red 2."

For his work in the G.I. Joe movies, Lee was asked to imprint his hand and footprints in the cement before Grauman's Chinese Theater. He was one of only two Korean actors asked to do so. He told the Huffington Post that he hopes to continue to expand his career by playing varied roles.

The department had declared earlier that the case would be sent over by the end of March but it seems the report will be delayed until at least the beginning of April.

Representatives from the police department explained that there were several reasons the investigation was prolonged, such as the delayed questioning of Park Shi Hoo and waiting for the lie-detector tests.

They are in the process of wrapping up, however, and will be able to hand over the case to the Public Prosecutor’s office in the first week of April.

[News] What To Know Before Watching A Historical KDrama.

[News] What To Know Before Watching A Historical KDrama.
Cr. - kdramastar

While historical dramas or sageuk are not usually the way most non-Koreans are introduced to kdramas, there are many well worth watching. And there won't be a quiz on the history later.

There are, however, some things you should know about sageuk before you sample one.

First, watching them can require commitment. While most kdramas span between 16 and 20 episodes, historical dramas can have 50 to 100 episodes in a single season. Since each episode is a single hour, that is a serious investment of time. As a rule, the more accurately they attempt to portray history, the longer they are.

Second, if you think you are beginning to understand even a little bit of Korean, the formal language in historical dramas may confuse you.

Third, those crazy mesh hats worn by men in the Joseon era might make you giggle at first, but all it takes is a few dashing male leads and you will soon find them flattering.

And lastly, don't confuse sageuk with actual history. Some of them are inspired by real events (and may still alter them), while others are purely fiction. That said, these dramas offer hours of pure entertainment with plenty of visual appeal. Here are a few to start on:

1

At 54 episodes, "Dae Jang Geum" tells the story of an orphaned cook that becomes a king's physician. It is based on the true story of Jang Geum, the first female doctor of the Joseon era.

At 62 episodes, "Queen Seondeok," follows the events in the life of a real queen, Seondeok of the Korean kingdom of Silla. She was the nation's first female ruler.

With only 20 picture-perfect episodes, the heartbreaking "Moon Embracing the Sun" is based on a novel about the romance between a fictional Joseon king and a shaman.

Based on the novel of the same, "Painter of the Wind," supposes that the Joseon era painter Shin Yun Bok was really a woman who disguised herself as a boy.

The 28-episode series "Bridal Mask" is set in 1930s Korea during the Japanese invasion. It concerns a Robin Hood type figure that stands up against the injustices of the invaders.

The 20-episode "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" is a fictional historical drama about a woman who pretends to be a boy so she can attend prestigious Sungkyunkwan University. If she's caught, she risks execution.

So, if you are in the mood for some lavish costumes, beautiful sets, stories of star-crossed lovers and some entertaining martial arts action, you may want to check these out.
