Mainland Chinese drama Red Dust <滾滾紅塵> recently began airing on television channels in Shanghai and Hunan. Starring Hong Kong actor Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) and mainland Chinese actress Qin Lan (秦嵐), Red Dust has attracted much attention from viewers due to its intriguing mixture of love and espionage.

Although Red Dust shares the same name as the 1990 film starring Taiwanese actors Brigitte Lin (林青霞) and Qin Han (秦漢), the storylines are not quite related. The new TV drama is set during the Republic era, and its main focus is the history of the Second Sino-Japanese War. From there, it interweaves issues such as national crises, love and friendship, and the economy, thus creating a historical atmosphere with its multi-layered story.

In Red Dust, Kevin plays an underground Communist Party member for the first time. His character, Yu Lifan, is a handsome, quick-witted, and cool-headed revolutionary who is employed as a secret service agent for the Communist Party. While in Shanghai, he meets his first love Gu Haitang (Qin Lan), who was sold to a brothel several years ago after the death of her parents. Out of desperation, Haitang agrees to transport firearms for Lifan, but is arrested and later forced to leave the Shanghai French Concession. Soon, they find events spiraling out of their control, as Lifan is put on the wanted list for assassinating a key member of the Nationalist Party and Haitang braves death to help him escape.

Even though this was their first time working together, Kevin and Qin Lan had good chemistry together. Red Dust also marks the first espionage-themed drama that Kevin has participated in since entering the mainland Chinese television entertainment industry.

The drama’s director, Man Kit Poon (潘文杰), who was nominated for Best Director in the 1992 Hong Kong Film Awards, shared that the filming style for Red Dust was deliberately meant to resemble that of a film. “This drama’s camera language, editing techniques, and background music all adopted movie-like production methods,” he said. “I believe that after it airs, it will give viewers an impression of complete newness.”

The Pang Brothers have recently released a string of promotional stills, theatrical posters, and a teaser trailer for their new film, Inferno 3D <逃出生天>, a 3D fire disaster film starring Sean Lau (劉青雲), Louis Koo (古天樂), and Angelica Lee (李心潔).

The $150 million HKD thriller film tells the tale of two firefighter brothers, portrayed by Sean and Louis, and their missions in saving the city of Guangzhou from crumbling to a pile of ashes. Three teaser posters featuring Sean and Louis were released. Six climactic photo stills were also released to accompany the one-minute action-packed teaser trailer.

The exciting trailer includes shots of collapsing buildings, underwater scenes, and stunt sequences of the main leads dangling on the edge of a building and a tower crane.
“I had to face explosions on set almost every day,” Louis disclosed. The actor joked that all the smoke had caused his lungs to turn black.

The actor also revealed that he almost turned down the offer to film Inferno 3D. Ironically, Louis, who plays a fireman in the film, had almost caught himself in fire when he was younger. “When I was around six to seven years old, I burned my left leg. My eyebrows and hair also almost caught fire. I had to strip down all my clothes. Many people told me not to film such a dangerous movie! Honestly, I was really scared when shooting the movie. I’ve seen a cameraman caught on fire before.”

On portraying brothers with Sean, Louis laughed, “We are both very dark! It makes us very convincing as brothers!”

Although Sean and Louis had collaborated many times before, the onscreen partners managed to spark out different chemistry each time. Louis said, “Last time [in Overheard], our characters schemed. This time, we argue as estranged brothers.

Next time, we should be just be enemies so I can hit him for good!”
A release date for Inferno 3D has not been formally announced, but the Pang Brothers hinted that the film may hit theaters by October 2013.

Two nights ago a charity premiere took place and yesterday an ultimate ticket autograph session was held as they played games with the audience. Jai Jai helped two female participants who competed in the shooting game, much to the envy of onlooking fans.

Jai Jai was very convincing with his instruction to the two contestants. He explained that guys like guns. Earlier he had shooting training for a police film. He denied that he gave special treatment to female fans from Japan. "Ekin pushed him out to help. I conversed with her in Japanese. Actually she knew Mandarin and spoke it better than I do." Have they seen Lam Fung's girlfriend Karena Ng Chin Yu on this trip? Wu Chun said, "I know her, we worked together on a movie. Ekin after the film promotion will perform concerts in Macau and Guangzhou. Ekin revealed that director Yu Yun Tai had an idea to make a modern version of the film. They were all interested because they had a lot of fun while working together. However, they might not be horse riding heroes again. They might drive hot cars. He said, "I too want to drive a hot car because I am reluctant to buy one. My dream car is an electric sports car, which already exists overseas. The Hong Kong government is too slow as it still has not equipment like charging station and meter, so it's not available in Hong Kong yet."

No one can deny that Raymond Lam (林峯) has been all over the media lately. Aside from tabloid reports about his love life, there are also reports on his new dramas, movies, concerts, and advertisements. Raymond once stressed that he will never deliberately stop himself in a certain position, but would get a hold of his own requirements through continuous learning and different forms of work.

Raymond’s new movie, Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>, will be released on April 4. “This is definitely a big breakthrough for me. Compared to the relaxing romantic comedies in the past, this is a classic epic household story. It extols the greatness of loyalty and affection, which can be more important than life. The script which displays the dramatic interaction between the cast was really memorable for me. I would like to thank director Ronny Yu (于仁泰) for giving me the chance to participate.”

The movie emphasizes how loyalty is often more important than life. Raymond explained that besides loyalty, if a person loses his basic freedoms, status and money are both futile. “There is nothing more precious than freedom,” Raymond said. “Therefore, we have to appreciate it and enjoy our right of having it.”

With his beginnings in the television industry, Raymond thanked TVB for giving him consecutive work opportunities. “Honestly, although filming dramas are a lengthy and tedious process, I still enjoy it. I’m clear of the fact that I’m already luckier than many others, because I am able to have a job I like. Plus, there is a lot of competition in this industry. If I don’t take things seriously, it is easy to be eliminated.”

Even though Raymond has been in the industry for 14 years, he admitted that he is still not used to, nor does he like having a camera follow him around when he is trying to live a normal life. “Especially when the media makes up a story based on a single photo that meets their desires. At first, I resisted it, but later I found that nothing is going to change. Might as well focus on my work and not care about the lame reports.”

Raymond continues, “Everything is in your hands and your heart. Even with the heart to do something, it won’t be successful if you don’t use your hands to do it, or your brain to think about it. For instance, there are many doors in front of you. Some might think there is a beautiful meadow behind them, but they don’t have the courage to open it.
I’m going to be the person who opens the door, because if it remains closed, then everything is only imagination. When we’re old and we don’t have the strength to open the door, there would be regret. I don’t want to give myself chances of regret. At the same time, I appreciate everything around me even more because of my tedious job.”

In conclusion, Raymond said, “You won’t possess something forever, because nothing always stays the same. I treasure all I have, so I try to do everything with the best of my efforts.”

New 3D action film, Switch <天机·富春山居图>, starring Andy Lau (劉德華), Chiling Lin (林志玲), Zhang Jingchu (張靜初), and Tong Dawei (佟大為), will be released in China on June 9, 2013.

Although there are still more than two months left, the music video of its theme song, “Secret”, sung by Magic Power (MP魔幻力量) and Ashin Chen (陳信宏) from Mayday (五月天), has already been exposed online. The music video features new footage from Switch, which has not been seen before.

The music video depicts the love and hate relationships between the four main leads in the film with its strong sense of rhythm. Along with the inclusion of a fleeting glimpse from veteran actress, Siqin Gaowa (斯 琴高娃), the music video is highly attractive amongst netizens. Ashin, who is also the producer of the music video, added that it is something not to miss out on.

Switch speaks of a top Hong Kong agent, Xiao Jinghan (Andy Lau), and his wife, Lin Yuyan (Zhang Jingchu), who both aim to protect a nationally treasured Chinese masterpiece, the “Fuchun Mountains” painting. This soon attracts a Japanese mafia spy, Lisa (Chiling Lin), who dwells between good and evil. Yamamoto (Tong Dawei), the one behind all the evil machinations, slowly reveals himself throughout the story.

Aside from her fleeting glimpse, Siqin Gaowa was willing to steer off her usual acting track to portray a mysterious cultural relics leader. “Although I am only a cameo in the film, it was a brave attempt to play the role. Hopefully I can gain the audience’s approval from this experience,” she expressed.

Director Ronny Yu (于仁泰) is not tired of seeing his seven Yang brothers and he hopes to reunite them again in a future action film.

Pegasus Motion Picture’s big blockbuster war epic, Saving General Yang <忠烈楊家將>, held a press conference/ premiere in Beijing on the afternoon of March 26. All seven male leads – “Dalang” Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健), “Erlang” Yu Bo (于波), “Sanlang” Vic Chou (周渝民), “Silang” Li Chen (李晨), “Wulang” Raymond Lam (林峯), “Liulang” Wu Chun (吳尊), and “Qilang” Fu Xinbo (付辛博), were all in attendance. The seven Yang brothers’ mother She Taijun, portrayed by acclaimed mainland Chinese actress Xu Fan (徐帆), also graced the press conference along with director Ronny Yu.

The film, which is set to hit in theaters worldwide on April 4, is a retelling of the traditional Chinese folklore Generals of the Yang Family < 楊家將>, a story about the militant Yang clan and their unflinching loyalty to their family and to their country. The film will depict the final years of the seven Yang brothers and their journey to save their father, Yang Linggong (Adam Cheng).

Xu Fan is the Heart of the Movie

Although a male-dominated film, Ronny Yu assured that the female characters in the action epic are all relevant and significant to the story. Xu Fan’s She Taijun is especially, according to Ronny Yu, the heart of it all. “Without her, this film would not have been made,” said Ronny.

The director revealed that Xu Fan was actually the first to be cast in the action epic. “Three years ago, I told [producer] Raymond Wong (黃百鳴) that we must invite Xu Fan. If there is Xu Fan, then we will be able to cast the rest of the actors.”

Xu Fan recalled that her first meeting with Ronny Yu was “not very long, but we chatted for over an hour.” On the actress’ first day on set, Xu Fan’s chemistry with the director clicked immediately, and she felt as if she and Ronny had been very long friends.
Ronny praised, “[Xu Fan] is experienced, professional, and very familiar with the script. Filming Xu Fan is like watching an actual movie.”

A “Modern” Retelling

At the press conference, a new poster for Saving General Yang was unveiled, featuring the seven Yang brothers sporting modern hairstyles but wearing traditional armor, giving off a feeling of stylish avant-garde.

The director stressed that although the film itself is a period drama, he wanted to approach the source material with a modernized retelling. “This is the reason why I wanted all my main stars to be young handsome men. I’ve watched a lot of historical war epics. Now, I think it’s time for the audience to experience a different kind of epic.”

Ronny also revealed that he plans to shoot a big-budget “spiritual sequel” of Saving General Yang. He is currently preparing a modern action film that is “similar to Ocean’s Eleven. It will also feature a group of handsome men, battling out their wits. We plan to go on various jaw-dropping overseas locations to shoot the movie. I really hope that the seven brothers will come together again to film it.”

His humorous parody portrayal of Patrick Tse (謝賢) in the 1997 TVB television drama Old Time Buddy < 難兄難弟> is still remembered today. 12 Mar – Despite his absence at the Hong Kong Federation of Filmmakers Awards to receive his 2012 Outstanding Performance Film Actor accolade for his role in "Nightfall", actor Nick Cheung was still able to celebrate his victory with his cast mates in Thailand.

HK Top Ten reported that the actor, who was unable to return to Hong Kong and attend the event due to his filming obligations in Thailand, celebrated his well-deserved win with "The Cartel War" director Benny Chan and fellow cast mates Sean Lau, Louis Koo, Berg Ng and others with a few bottles of champagne.

The actor expressed, "Although the team didn't give me time off to return to Hong Kong for the award, they still think about me. Our team's cinematographer Fletcher Poon also received Best Cinematography, which is proof that we have a solid team."

However, Nick still has a chance to make his acceptance speech, as the actor was also nominated for the Best Actor category at the 22nd Hong Kong Film Awards.

When asked if he is confident about winning Best Actor again, Nick looked at his fellow actor Sean Lau and answered, "Winning an award depends on your fate. But I admire how Sean joked that his chances were not high because this time the competition was strong, with two with the last name Leung and two with the name Ka Fai. Currently filming for director Benny Chan’s (陳木勝) The Cartel War <掃毒> in Thailand, Louis Koo (古天樂) had to hang onto the bumper of a car to prevent himself from falling 10 floors below the exterior of a building yesterday.

Louis Koo, Nick Cheung (張家輝), Sean Lau (劉青雲), Benjamin Lam (林國斌) and Kenneth Low (盧惠光) are on location filming in a barren land located about 40 minutes drive away from Bangkok. Universe Films has chosen the notorious building in Thailand where several murders had taken place, but the ominous atmosphere did not deter the actors from professionally filming the dangerous stunts.

A History of Injuries

Louis has a record of getting hurt in the midst of filming. In 2011, while filming A Chinese Ghost Story <新倩女幽魂>, he broke his leg ligament. And more recently in Inferno 3D <逃出生天>, he hurt his hand. Despite that, and the sinister history of the location, Louis insisted on not using a body double for this particular scene where he was chased by Benjamin and Kenneth in a car.

Louis was pushed by the car to the outside edge of the building. In order to prevent himself from falling off the tenth floor of the building, Louis had to hold onto the bumper of the car while hanging in mid-air.

To play it safe, Louis was armored with tight safety clothing but that did not help avert scratching his hand in one shot, causing him to bleed profusely. A first aid team on location came to his rescue promptly, preventing further infection. To Louis, this was a minor mishap compared to his previous experiences.

Louis said, “The shot was not the hardest nor was it the most dangerous. I remember in Connected <保持通話>, I was almost driven down the mountain by a car; and in a baby-saving scene in Rob-B-Hood <寶貝計劃>, I fell and rolled down the road. Those times were definitely more dangerous. The dangerous thing this time is the suffocating safety clothing!”

Nick Puts off Surgery for Film

Louis is not the only one who puts himself at risk. Because of a previous accident, Nicky’s pinky finger has been twisted, which caused the finger to be bent in a z-shape.

Despite that, Nicky had to jump onto the car in the same scene and pull Louis out of his predicament. Though his finger could not be straightened, Nicky feels he still has the ability to do action scenes such as this one. Because of his busy filming schedule, he is postponing his surgery appointment until filming concludes.

Producer Jay Lam (林小強) made sure that tight safety measures were put in place while filming and he reassured that insurance worth as much as $10 million HKD has been bought for each actor.

In the past, TVB Anniversary series broadcast near year-end were always at an advantage. Besides the heavy promotions, the TVB Anniversary Awards took place during the same time frame, placing emphasis on these dramas.

Allegedly, Beauty at War <金枝慾孽-貳> and Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II> were initially chosen as the two Anniversary series of 2013. Since Beauty at War’s producer Jonathan Chik (戚其義) left TVB, Rosy Business 3 <巾幗梟雄之諜血長天> was rumored to take its spot instead. Regarding this, TVB program director, K.C. Ho (何冠中), expressed that Jonathan has a good relationship with TVB and his departure had nothing to do with the broadcasting time of the drama.

Rosy Business 3 has not even started filming yet. Producer Lee Tim Shing (李添勝) said, “I heard rumors about the drama being aired this year. As to when and whether or not it will be an Anniversary series, it does not matter.”

K.C. revealed that the important dramas of the year would be selected to air in the fourth season. The first season had included Inbound Troubles <老表, 你好嘢!>. Below is the current schedule for the next three seasons. It is not set in stone yet, since all dramas are either still filming, or are yet to begin.

With two films and one blockbuster television drama ready for broadcast in 2013, Hong Kong actor Wallace Chung (鍾漢良) is expected to hit the next milestone of his career this year. Although the actor debuted in the industry as a TVB managed artist, it was his being a singer in Taiwan that attributed to his fame. Wallace has also been enjoying explosive fame in mainland China after portraying Emperor Kangxi in Zhang Jizhong’s (张纪中) Royal Tramp <鹿鼎记> in 2008.

In March, fans will be see Wallace in the television drama adaptation of Tong Hua’s (桐华) Best Time <最美的时光>. The drama also stars Janine Chang (张钧甯) and Smile Jia (贾乃亮).

After signing under Johnnie To’s (杜琪峯) management last year, Wallace will switch his career focus to Hong Kong, expanding his film, television, and music career in the Greater China region.

Wallace’s Fall in Love <愛神> costar, Zhang Li (张俪), exclaimed, “As long as Wallace Chung is around, the surrounding environment will be as loud as the Lunar New Year eve. So many people, so many screams!”

Wallace’s adventurous New Year will start with the mainland Chinese romance film Fall in Love starring opposite Olivia Wang (王子文) and Zhang Li, which will be released in March 2013. Despite a decade of filming experience behind his back, Wallace will debut his first marriage proposal scene in Fall in Love. The 38-year-old Wallace expressed that he never had to propose to anyone in his life, so filming the scene was quite an interesting experience for the actor.

The actor’s next big project, the Johnnie To film Drug War <毒戰>, will also open in theaters next month. Wallace will costar with Louis Koo (古天樂), Sun Honglei (孙红), Huang Yi (黄奕), Gordon Lam (林家棟), and Michelle Ye (葉璇) in the Hong Kong-China co-produced action flick.

Wallace will also star as Qiao Feng in Tian Long Ba Bu <天龙八部>, the fifth television adaptation of Jin Yong’s(金庸) wuxia novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. Coming to mainland television channels this fall, Tian Long Ba Bu is adapted from the latest edition of the original novel, in which Qiao Feng’s story arc is expanded.

The comparatively underwhelming cast of Tian Long Ba Bu lowered fans’ anticipation for the remake. Nonetheless, Wallace expressed that portraying Qiao Feng is another milestone to his film career. “It’s a role I never filmed before,” said Wallace. “Filming had been laborious, but I really enjoyed my time as Qiao Feng.”

Filming is currently underway for Director Benny Chan’s (陳木勝) new film, The Cartel War <掃毒>. Funded by Universe Films, The Cartel War boasts a budget of $16 million USD and features thrilling action scenes to be filmed in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Macau.

The Cartel War will follow Hong Kong narcotics police officer (Louis Koo 古天樂) as he investigates a supposedly dead former cop (Nick Cheung 張家輝) whom he suspects to be a wanted drug lord. Louis is assisted by Narcotics Bureau Officer (Sean Lau 劉青雲). The three police officers’ fates and identities are altered when they encounter a powerful drug lord, portrayed by Lo Hoi Pang (盧海鵬).

Yesterday, the cast of The Cartel War, Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Nick Cheung , Benjamin Lam (林國斌) and Yuan Quan (袁 泉), were filming on location in Central, Hong Kong. Driving a Mercedes Benz and wearing sunglasses, Louis and Benjamin drew such a spectacle that the filming area has to be cordoned off. The police was also called upon to help direct traffic on the crowded streets.

Mainland Chinese actress, Yuan Quan, will share a romance with Louis and become pregnant with his child in the film.

In a scene filmed several days ago, Louis had pushed Sean with such force that Sean fell head-first onto the floor. It was no acting when Sean held his head in agony. Louis related at the blessing ceremony yesterday, “I was shocked! His head was swelling and red and I told him to go to the hospital immediately for a scan.” To which Sean joked, “No worries, I still remember that I’m Nick Cheung!” Good friend and experienced parent, Nick was paternal towards the injured Sean. Fortunately for Sean, the injury resulted in merely a slight bump.

The cast and crew will soon travel to Thailand, where many of the film’s action scenes will take place. Featured scenes include a  helicopter military siege and Nick’s character being bitten to death by a crocodile. Regarding his early death in the movie, Nick said, “I am a good man and have done many good deeds to deserve a handsome remuneration even though I die early in the film.”

Nick’s daughter, Brittany, who is turning 7 years old, is now facing schoolwork blues. Asked if he has been a dutiful father, he replied, “I don’t know. But sometimes when I get home, I will see my daughter being tutored. The tutors nowadays are so hot! It makes me want to have extra lessons myself!”
