เดือนกุมภาพันธ์ในภาษาอังกฤษ February มาจากเทพเจ้าโรมันนามว่า Februus ซึ่งเป็นเทพเจ้าแห่งความบริสุทธิ์ มาจากคำภาษาละตินที่แปลว่า 'ชะล้าง' ซึ่งเป็นเดือนที่คนต้องชะล้างตัวเองให้สะอาดรอรับปีใหม่

เดือนต่างๆ ในสมัยโรมันจะมีสามสิบวันเท่ากันหมด โดยที่จะมีวันพิเศษอีกห้าวันในช่วงปลายปี เพื่อให้ครบจำนวนวันที่โลกหมุนรอบดวงอาทิตย์ในแต่ละปี
ต่อมาได้มีการจัดเรียงปฏิทินใหม่ โดย จูเลียส ซีซ่า ตัดสินใจให้มี 31 วัน เดือนเว้นเดือน คือ January, March, May, July, September และ November โดยที่มีวันพิเศษเหลือเพียง 5 วัน แต่มีเดือนที่ต้องมี 31 วันถึง 6 เดือน ดังนั้น จูเลียส ซีซ่า จึงเอา หนึ่งวันออกจากเดือน February (ซึ่งเป็นเดือนสุดท้ายของปีในสมัยโรมัน) ทำให้เดือนนี้มีเพียง 29 วัน เพื่อจะเติมให้ครบตามที่ต้องการ



ต่อมาในสมัยของกษัตริย์ Augustus ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงจำนวนวันในเดือน August เพราะว่า ในเดือน July ซึ่งมาจากชื่อ จูเลียส ซีซ่า มี 31 วัน ในเดือน August ซึ่งเป็นชื่อของพระองค์ก็ไม่ควรมีจำนวนวันน้อยกว่า (มีเพียง30 วัน) ในเดือนที่เป็นชื่อกษัตริย์เช่นเดียวกัน ดังนั้นจึงมีการกำหนดให้เดือน August มี 31 วัน โดยเอาวันจากเดือน February มาอีกหนึ่งวัน ทำให้เดือน February เหลือเพียง 28 วัน เพื่อมาเติมให้เดือน August จากนั้นก็จัดเรียงเดือนในช่วงปลายปีที่มี 31 วัน ใหม่ โดยเปลี่ยนให้เดือน October และ December มี 31 วัน แทนเดือน September และ November ซึ่งกลายเป็นเดือนที่มี 30 วัน ดังปฏิทินปัจจุบัน

The Legend of February

February was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old Roman calendar. January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were added by Numa Pompilius about 700 BCE. February remained the last month of the calendar year until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BCE), when it became the second month. At certain intervals February was truncated to 23 or 24 days and a 27-day intercalary month, Intercalaris, was inserted immediately after February to realign the year with the seasons. Under the reforms that instituted the Julian calendar, Intercalaris was abolished, leap years occurred regularly every fourth year (after a few years of confusion), and in leap years February gained a 29th day.

Why is February so short?
Why is February such a short month, having only 28 or 29days, whereas the other months have 30 or 31?



Basically Caesar Augustus stole a day for his month. - In the year 3961 AM, which we call 46 BC, Julius Caesar standardized the civil calendar of the Roman Empire so that it had twelve months with 30 days each. An extra 5 days were spread out among the months to keep the calendar in line with the seasons. Before then, the date depended on observations of the sun and the moon. He also introduced the concept of the leap day, which adds a day to February every four years. The month of Quintilis was renamed 'July' to honor him for this calendar reform. Later, Caesar Augustus made a minor calendar reform. Under Julius Caesar's calendar, leap day came in the middle of the month and had the same date as the day before. Caesar Augustus moved the leap day to the end of the month and gave it its own date. February was an unpopular month, because it contained an unpleasant religious observance, so he moved one day from February to the month of Sextilis, which was renamed 'August' in his honor, and now had the same number of days as Julius' month, July. Thus, February was left short.
