[FASHION] A.N.JELL's Idol Look
Product: Idol Look
These days one must learn how to dress when singing on a music show and know what looks fashionable, not just on a fashion show runway. Even the fictional idol in a TV drama is making a statement. Here is an inside look at the idol look portrayed by the members of rock band A.N.JELL on SBS TV series “Minamishineyo”.
1) The look of an idol or idol group
2) The source of trends that everyone has turned to since the rise of idol groups (such as Big Bang, 2NE1) who proved that a great fashion sense, on top of music and dance skills, can be an asset and commercial advantage for the group.
3) Offstage casual wear as well as onstage performance outfits of idol members are key components
4) The fashion industry has long recruited fashion-savvy musicians as their muse and collaborated with them to inherit their style. For example, the Kanye West line for Louis Vuitton, Missy Elliott line for Adidas, etc.
A) How to produce the look:
① In a group, each member should dress to express his individuality but must have consistency within the group. For example, if the members all wear white shirts on top, they should wear skinny jeans in different colors or put on different accessories.
② Everyone must be stylish as a group, but not everyone should be conspicuously stylish. In other words, only one person should stand out, such as Hwang Tae-kyung in A.N.JELL.
③ Avoid boring styles. In the case of A.N.JELL members, they wear seemingly gay-ish colors such as yellow and pink and even multiple brooches and shiny cardigans. We believe it is an obligation of the trend-setting idols to attract the fans attention in any way possible.
B) How to use the look:
① When out in public, such as the airport or the streets, and trying to appear as he want to avoid people’s eyes, an idol must prepare an absolutely eye-catching fashion item. For example, gigantic and colorful headphones, flashy sunglasses, or a weird hat that can only be worn by an idol.
② The must-have item for this fall and winter season is the snood (a round, closed-end muffler that can also be worn as a hat). Accessorize and keep your neck warm by wearing a snood. If you want to grab more attention from onlookers, put it on top of your head.
③ Free yourself from thoughts like, “I’m a man” or “I’m a woman”. The leader of an idol group must be able to put on clothes that were originally designed for the opposite sex. Hwang Tae-kyung demonstrates the perfect example by wearing an ambiguous leopard-print scarf, all in the name of style.
④ Take full advantage of hoodies, fluorescent-colored layered items and skinny jeans regardless of the group’s identity or style. Why? Because it’s the current trend. (Idol groups not only create trends but also accommodate them.)
⑤ The hairstyle should be radical, no matter what. Tie up your bang, tie your whole hair, wear a headband, dye your hair blond.. Always keep in mind that you should never leave your hair still and that the hairstyle is part of your style.
⑥ When wearing a suit, wear it with “an edge”. Show off your own style by wearing a skinny necktie and tie it so you can see the inside, or wear a black shirt inside the suit. However, ignore the right size or the right fit. Why? Because you are an idol. You are still growing so it would be a waste to buy something that fits you right now. If you go one size bigger, you can wear it a year longer…
C) To avoid malfunctions:
① Do not confuse the drama with the reality. First, for the stylist. If you are a stylist for a real idol group, you may get slapped in the face by the idols if you copy off the idol style looks seen in “Minamishineyo”. A drama is only a drama. Strictly analyze the trend and prepare high-quality items.
② Second, to the fans of a certain idol group. Do not get upset watching the drama. Do not think thoughts like, ‘Isn’t that something my idols wore?’, ‘Are they mocking my idols?’ or ‘Is that all they can wear?’ It’s healthier if you lay off the anger.
③ Third, to the cast in the drama. Wear what your stylist gives you to wear, but don’t wear it too well. Unlike singers, if an actor gives fans the impression that he or she is too crazy about fashion, you may gain a not-so-great nickname such as “vain so-and-so”. To give you more detail, wear a geometric-print hoodie T-shirt -- as worn by Big Bang members -- but wear it in big prints and try to look shabby wearing it. Benchmark Jeremy who always manages to add the nerdy touch to however hard he tried to look fashionable.
④ Fourth, to the viewers. Use the idols in the drama as your teachers in how NOT to dress. That is how you will look when you fail at dressing like a real idol.
