Korean pop idol Kim Hyun-joong of SS501 recently attended former South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan's 80th birthday party, according to his agency DSP Media on Tuesday.

"Before attending a birthday party for [DSP agency CEO] Mr. Lee Ho-yeon, Kim stopped by the reception for former president Chun Doo-hwan with Mr. Lee", an official at DSP Media was quoted as saying.

The official explained that Kim was scheduled to attend Lee's dinner party with his bandmates but when Lee received a call from Chun's party, the two briefly dropped by the event together. The agency stressed that "it had just happened" and asked that "there be no misunderstandings".

Kim, 23, is the leader of boy band SS501, one of the most successful K-pop acts in Asia since their debut in 2005. The singer has also done some acting work, most notably in the smash hit drama "Boys over Flowers" last year alongside actors Lee Min-ho and Koo Hye-seoun.

김현중, 全 팔순연 왜 참석했나

[JES 심수미] SS501 멤버 김현중이 전두환 전 대통령의 팔순 잔치에 참석한 것을 놓고 팬들 사이에서 갑론을박이 벌어지고 있다.

18일 관련 보도가 알려진 뒤 SS501의 소속사 DSP미디어가 "전혀 사실무근"이라고 반박했지만 몇 시간 후 기존 입장을 번복했다. DSP는 "김현중이 전 전 대통령과 직접적인 친분은 없고 다른 일로 소속사 사장과 동행한 것일 뿐"이라고 해명했다.

김현중은 19일 오전 2시쯤 SS501 공식사이트에 "참석한 건 맞지만 소속사 사장님의 생일을 축하하러 간 것이었다. 알지도 못하면서 욕하지 않았으면 좋겠다"는 글을 남겼다.

소속사 DSP도 같은 날 오전 11시 "현중 군이 많은 상처를 받은 듯 하다"며 해명의 글을 올렸다.

소속사는 "18일은 이호연 대표의 생일이었다. 이날 '인생극장 2010' 촬영 일정이 있었던 박정민을 제외하고 사장님과 김현중·김규종·허영생·김형준의 저녁식사가 예정돼 있었다. 김현중의 경우 다른 미팅 건으로 사장님과 함께 있다가 약속 장소로 이동하던 중 사장님에게 전 전대통령 측으로부터 연락이 와 잠시 들른 것"이라고 설명했다.

전 전 대통령의 팔순잔치는 18일 서울 강남구 논현동의 한 예식장에서 열렸다. 정치권 인사 300여 명이 참석한 가운데 김현중의 모습이 보였다는 일부 언론 보도가 나왔고 이에 대해 DSP는 "김현중은 그런 잔치에 참석할 이유도 없고, 참석한 사실도 전혀 없다. 도대체 그런 보도가 왜 나왔는지 이유를 모르겠다"고 참석 사실을 부인했었다.
