On November 1st, SMAP’s Kimura Takuya (37) made an appearance at a private screening of the movie “Space Battleship Yamato” in which he played the lead role. The movie directed by Yamazaki Takashi was shown at Tokyo’s Marunouchi’s Tokyo International Forum opens publicly on December 1st, 2010. Kimura took extra steps when it came to filming saying “I felt responsible,” to stay true to the legendary anime “Space Battleship Yamato” (Uchuu Senkan Yamato). Kimura was noticeably moved when he commented on the completed project, “I’m overwhelmed that it’s finally releasing.”
“Finally the day has come that you, the general public, can view this film. I hope there’s success at the end of this long voyage. Please show your support.”

Kimura appealed to the crowd with pride like the Space Battleship Yamato squad captain, Kodai Susumu.

The original, which aired in 1974 on Japan TV, was the first to the start of the sci-fi anime boom. After the initial announcement, with the exception of the cast and staff, a flood of over 100,000 people applied for the screening.

Chances of being selected was roughly a 52:6 ratio, 1900 entries (3800 people) were selected. According to Toho Distribution, “We’ve never received this much reception for past Toho productions before.”

When hearing about this number, Kimura said, “I’m happy about everyone’s feelings for this movie. I don’t know how you’ll react to the film, but I’m excited. I’ll leave it up to you.”

The gathering started off with Kimura, then shifted to heroine, Mori Yuki, played by Kuroki Meisa (22) and the rest of the Yamato crew of 10 people. Kuroki stated, “I’m nervous from the pressures of this franchise that is loved by so many people. I’m glad all of you made it here.”

Kimura also confessed the first movie he saw in theaters was the 1977 release of “Space Battleship Yamato.” Deep in thought, Kimura reflected, “I’m now a part of this franchise years after that. I’m extremely happy about the completion of ‘Yamato.’ I’m filled with great gratitude.”

The grand story takes place in 2199, a year after Earth’s destruction by a Gamilas invasion that wipes out a majority of mankind. Kodai Susumu and his crew embark on a journey to the planet Iscandar–148,000 light years away to search for a device that eliminates radioactivity. And so the heroic battle with the Gamilas begins.

It’s been 3 years since Kimutaku’s star power was used in 2007′s “Hero” and with all the Yamato Love, he’s aiming for a grand takeover of the box office.
