Korean singer and actor Kim Hyun-joong has been cast as the male lead in an upcoming TV series, his agency KEYEAST announced in a press release on Thursday.

Making his return to the small screen in two years since starring in MBC's "Naughty Kiss," Kim will play a strong independent character named Baek Mir who faces difficulties in life as an orphan in the new series, "City Conquest."

"City Conquest," based on the million-seller comic strip of the same name by author Shin Hyung-bin, focuses on the story of Baek Mir who blames his father for leaving their family and decides to get revenge on things that drove his family into destruction.

An official with KEYAST said in the statement that "Kim is putting in a ton of effort in preparing for his role and hopes to show a mature side of himself as actor."

In the meantime, Kim will set off on his Asia tour with the first meet-and-greet at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore tomorrow.

He will then take his performances to Hong Kong, Taiwan and China -- Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing -- till June.

Making his debut as a member of K-pop group SS501 in 2005, he has concurrently pursued his career as an actor by starring in KBS' teenage series "Boys Over Flowers" with actor Lee Min-ho in 2005.

After the series made a big hit, not just in Korea but in Asian countries, the star became a household name in the Hallyu phenomenon.
