Korea’s three major broadcasters -- KBS, SBS, MBC -- have each announced the year’s winners in the drama category.
Actress Kim Nam-joo was honored with the Grand Prize as the female lead in the year`s most-watched TV show, “My Husband Got a Family” at the KBS Drama Awards on New Year’s Eve, 2012.
The family drama attracted an average rating of 33.1 percent when it was aired between February 25 and December 9 of this year.
Kim made her debut in 1994 and is also well-known for being actor Kim Seung-woo’s wife. The actress grabbed her first prize in 2010 with her role in MBC drama “Queen of Reversals.”
While Yoo Joon-sang of “My Husband” and Song Joong-ki of “The Innocent Man” shared the Best Actor award at KBS, Moon Chae-won received the Best Actress award as the female lead in “The Innocent Man.”
At the 2012 SBS Drama Awards, "THE CHASER” hero Son Hyun-joo grabbed the Grand Prize.
The 16-part series has received rave reviews from the public as well as critics with the story of a father`s revenge on his daughter`s murderer, earning an average rating of 13.6 percent.
Son, an acclaimed actor, has usually appeared in TV dramas in supporting roles and he seemed visibly moved as he was finally given first prize since his debut in 1991.
Lee Min-ho of “The Great Faith,” So Ji-sub of “Phantom” and Jang Dong-gun of “Gentleman’s Dignity” shared the Best Actor prize at SBS. Meanwhile, Jung Ryeo-won of “Cho Han Ji,” Han Ji-min of “Rooftop Prince” and Kim Ha-neul of “Gentleman’s Dignity” shared the Best Actress prize.
At the 2012 MBC Drama Awards, actor Cho Seung-woo took home the Grand Prize with his role in the ongoing TV series “The King’s Doctor.”
The 50-part historical drama has recently posted an average rating of around 18 to 19 percent.
Making his debut in 1999, Cho rose to stardom with his role in hit movies "The Classic,” "Marathon" and "Tazza: The High Rollers."
He has also led a successful career in musicals, starring in famous productions such as "Carmen," "Rent," "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and “Jekyll & Hyde.”
However, Cho’s win has got a backlash from the public. Several news outlets as well as netizens have commented Cho is a remarkable actor but that MBC should have given it to Ahn Jae-wook, the male lead in the hit drama "Light and Shadow.”
The controversy is not expected to blow over any time soon as Ahn didn’t receive any kind of prize despite his brilliant acting in the drama.
In the meantime, Kim Soo-hyun and Han Ga-in, the couple of historical romance show "The Moon Embracing the Sun," were honored with the Best Actor and Actress prize at MBC.
