It’s been revealed that Nosaka Akiyuki’s novel, ‘Hotaru no Haka‘ (‘Grave of the Fireflies‘), will be getting a live-action movie adaptation in England.

‘Hotaru no Haka’ is a semi-autobiographical novel that’s set in Kobe during the end of the Pacific War. It tells a story about a young boy and his little sister who desperately struggle to survive the war.

The novel was published in 1967 and was awarded the 58th Naoki Prize. In 1988, it received an anime adaptation directed by Takahata Isao through Studio Ghibli. It was released the same time as Miyazaki Hayao’s ‘Tonari no Totoro‘ (‘My Neighbor Totoro‘).

According to Screen, Dresden Pictures has acquired the rights to the live-action adaptation. It will be produced by Liam Garvo and James Heath for a release sometime in 2014.

‘Hotaru no Haka’ received a live-action TV film adaptation back in 2005 starring Matsushima Nanako. It was then released as a movie in 2008 directed by Hyugaji Taro. This will be the first time ‘Hotaru no Haka’ will see a live-action adaptation outside of Japan.
