Legend has it that more than 2000 years ago, the Kingdom of Nangnang possessed a mystical Ja Myung Drum (Ja Myung Go) which will sound by itself when enemies invade. In reality,

Ja Myung Go does not represent the drum but instead, is embodied by the King's daughter, Princess Ja Myung. Princess Ja Myung and Princess Nak-Rang are born on the same day and time to the same father but different mothers.

It is predicted that one princess will become the nation's savior while the other will bring the entire nation down. Using her family's powerful background, Princess Nak-Rang's mother successfully establishes her daughter as the savior princess while Princess Ja Myung, who is branded the princess of destruction, escapes death with the help of her mother and grows up among the common folk.

When she learns of her true identity, Princess Ja Myung returns to her Kingdom, resulting in a new wave of internal politics and power struggles. Princess Ja Myung and Prince Hodong of the rival state of Goguryeo fall in love but fate has it that they cannot be together.

Princess Nak-Rang, who is also in love with the Prince, willingly gives her nation up to him by destroying her Kingdom's mystical war drum. Princess Ja Myung, fighting to save her nation, finally pierces her sword towards her beloved Prince Hodong...

홍요섭 / Hong Yo Seob as Chae Ri (King of Nangnang )

State of Nangnang
Hangul: 낙랑국
Hanja: 樂浪國
Revised Romanization: Nangnang-guk
Mc Cune-Reischauer: Nangnangguk

According to a theory first advanced by Sin Chae-ho and recently elaborated by Yun Nae-hyeon, an independent state of Nangnang (195BCE - 32CE) existed in the northern Korean peninsula. The State of Nangnang was originally located in the area of Liaoning, but moved the capital city into the area of the Taedong River at 195 BCE.

The theory says that Lelang (Nangnang) commandery as set up by the Chinese Western Han Dynasty existed in Manchuria rather than Korea; hence, Lelang (Nangnang) commandery in Manchuria and independent Nangnang around the Taedong River in Korea were separate entities. Only later, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, was independent Nangnang conquered and incorporated into Goguryeo at 32Ce. The theory goes on to suggest that the two were later confused, leading to the misconception that Lelang Commandery was in Korea instead of Manchuria.

The source of this theory is one interpretation of a passage from the Samguk Sagi[5]. The passage describes Choe Ri (崔理), a 王 (wang) of Lelang / Nangnang. However, 王 (wang) as used in Classical Chinese can mean both the king of a sovereign state, and the prince of a dependent principality. The theory that posits a separate state of Nangnang is based on the former interpretation rather than the latter. However, Samguk Sagi and Book of Later Han utilize the term "Taesu(太守)" when the local governors in Lelang commandery are mentioned

The theory is also cast into doubt by the lack of historical sources pointing to the existence of Nangnang. In particular, the only known ruler of the posited state, Choi Ri, is not mentioned in any other historical text.

문성근 /Moon Sung Geun as King Daemusin (King of Goguryeo)

King Daemusin of Goguryeo (4-44, r. 18-44) was the third ruler of Goguryeo, the northernmost of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. King Daemusin led early Goguryeo through a period of massive territorial expansion, conquering several smaller nations and the powerful kingdom of Dongbuyeo.

Prince Muhyul (King Daemusin) was the third son of King Yuri, and grandson of Jumong. He was made crown prince in the year 14, at the age of 11, and became king upon his father's death four years later. He was buried in Daesuchonwon.

Daemusin strengthened central rule of Goguryeo and expanded its territory. He annexed Dongbuyeo and killed its king Daeso in 22. Along the Amnok River, he conquered Gaema-guk in 26, and later conquered Guda-guk.

Park Min Young (박민영) as Princess Ra Hee

After fending off China's attack in 28, he sent his son, Prince Hodong, to attack the Nangnang Commandery in northwestern Korea in 32. He destroyed Nangnang in 37. The legendary love story of Prince Hodong and Princess of Nangnang, recorded in the Samguk Sagi, is well known in Korea to this day. The princess is said to have torn the war drums of her castle, so that Goguryeo could attack without warning.
