Korean Poetry, 쌍화점 Ssangwhajeom / 쌍화점 ost

"A Frozen Flower"

Ssangwhajeom / "A Frozen Flower" Korean Movie : Synopsis

Synopsis In the end of Goryeo era politically manipulated by the Yuan Dynasty, the ambitious King of the Goryeo Dynasty organizes Kunryongwe. Hong Lim, the commander of Kunryongwe, captivates the King of Goryeo, and the Queen keeps her eyes on the relationship between Hong Lim and the King with a reluctant view. Meanwhile, the bilateral relation between Goryeo and the Yuan gets worse as Yuan demands to install the cousin of the King in the Crown Prince of Goryeo with ascribing it to no son the King has. The King refuses it resolutely, so the high-ranking officials of Goryeo, who are in submission to Yuan, are discontented with the king. One day, the King gives Hong Lim a covert yet unobjectionable order to sleep with the Queen instead of himself to protect the independence of Goryeo from the Yuan by making a son, the successor to Goryeo throne.

Gongmin of Goryeo:[

Gongmin of Goryeo:[공민왕 영정] : The Artist King.

King Gongmin (1330 – 1374) ruled Goryeo (Korea) from 1351 until 1374. He was the second son of King Chungsuk. In addition to his various Korean names (see right), he bore the Mongolian name Bayàn Temür

Goryeo had been a dependency of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty since Mongol invasion of Korea. Starting with King Chungnyeol, prospective rulers of Korea married Mongol princesses and were customarily sent to the Yuan Court, in effect, as hostages. As per this custom, King Gongmin spent many years in the Yuan court, being sent there in 1341, before ascending the Korean throne. He married the Mongol princess Queen Noguk But in the mid-14th century Yuan was beginning to crumble, soon to be replaced by the Ming dynasty in 1368.

Although the relationship between Queen Noguk and the king were very close, they failed to conceive an heir for many years. Despite suggestions of receiving a second wife, the king ignored these requests. Queen Noguk became pregnant in 1365 but died during the child birth which led to the King's depression and mental instability. He became indifferent to politics and entrusted a great task to monk Sin Don (신돈, 辛旽). However, after six years, Sin Don lost his position.

Goryeo's entrenched bureaucracy never forgave King Gongmin for his reform efforts. They interpreted his policy of cutting all ties with the Yuan and establishing relations with Ming China as a direct threat to their status and feared that further attempts at reform might yet be made. Kaesong's deposed pro-Mongol faction battled to protect its position and hoped to renew ties with the Mongols who had helped them gain and hold their wealth in the first place. in 1374, he was killed by his young men, Choe Man-saeng (최만생) and some young men he was recently having relations with. One of the young men, Hong Ryun (홍륜) had relations with one of Gongmin's concubines, which led to Gongmin's anger. So before Gongmin could kill him, Hong Ryun and Choe Man-saeng killed Gongmin in his sleep.

King Gongmin was well known for his artistic skills and are referred to as one of the best artists of the Goryeo period. He was also well-known for his calligraphy works. Example of his works are 《천산대렵도(天山大獵圖)》(국립현대미술관) 《노국대장공주진(眞)》 《석가출산상(釋迦出山像)》 《아방궁도(阿房宮圖)》《현릉산수도(玄陵山水圖)》 《동자보현육아백상도(童子普賢六牙白象圖)》.

Myung Joon Kim

On the External Factors Involved in the Creation of Ssanghwajeom

Dissertation about Ssangwhajeom (쌍화점): Korean Poetry.

This dissertation aims to shed light on the external factors involved in the creation of Ssanghwajeom during the reign of King Chungryeol. King Chungryeol visited Yuan Empire several times since he became the crown prince, and experienced a highly advanced foreign culture in Yuan Empire where many different cultures coexisted. At that time, Islamic culture had filtered into the hearts of the people of Yuan Empire very deeply, and specifically, this penetration of Islamic culture contributed a lot to the formation of Wonsangok and miscellaneous plays. This cultural influence was extended to Koryeo and King Chungryeol, and finally, Ssanghwajeom was born here. It can be said that miscellaneous plays of Yuan Empire and Islamic religion were the underlying factors that led to the formation of Ssanghwajeom. We can infer that the 4 act system of miscellaneous plays of Yuan Empire, sole main singing character, male-oriented ruling ideology, etc, and music had bearings on Ssanghwajeom. On that basis, King Chungryeol had his interest in miscellaneous plays. The trade between Koryeo and Islamic states was gigantic, and the Arabian men entered Koryeo through Yuan Empire for the most part before and after the reign of King Chungryeol. They engaged in commercial activities in Koryeo, and the fact that Arabian men supervised the festival celebrating the construction of new palace in the 5th year after the enthronement of King Chungryeol indicates that they had a great influence in Koryeo. This background led an Arabian man to play the hero in Ssanghwajeom. And that the space of play, namely, restaurants, temples, downtown, taverns, etc, was designated as the entertaining district of commercial city points the fact that Islamic merchants played a signifiant role in the formation of commercial city at that time. Moreover, the plot in which a promiscuous man had multiple sexual intercourse with many women reflects the customs of male-oriented Islamic society.

Goshireh..Gorilla..Noodle Funny Poem

Oh … Goshireh.. Gorilla
Seoul Tokyo Nagoya
I like noodle mama..!
Dreaming fly to Nagoya Goshireh…

Even if you're lucky,
Maybe you'll get laid.
As I lay me down to sleep,
I hope I don't wake up beside a creep.
Where'd you come from?
Wha'd I drink last night?
Beer? Whiskey? A little rum?
There was a little fight.
I saved the day,
Then got carried away.
Away. Away. I cast you away.
Wait, no, come back, you didn't pay.
Sorry, my bad.
I'll put it on your tab.
Tab was a soda back in the day.
Since than, it's faded away.
Now it's 7-Up, Mountain Dew.
Oh, I'm fine, and how about you?
There's a place in Seoul
Where Jiajang-myon noodles to show,
But Gorilla Noodle
I need to eat double
Oh Gorilla… Goshireh…

One day, we shall be free.
The blind will see.
The mute will speak.
The deaf will hear.
The lame will leap.
And then, we'll go to my house
And eat a lot of cheese.
Ever read "The Drops of God"?

The means and motive - clear as water.
Don't worry, it's a short read.
To more reading, it may lead.
…Water Drops of God!... Woo-hoo!
Now it's off for you.
College life, aye?
Eat noodles everyday?
Them's good eatin'
Iffin' ya don't mind waitin'
Three minute noodles.
What a lie.
Wait for the water to boil.
Time no fly.
Watched pot boil not? Might as well guess.
If the answer know you, need you life? Yes.

A ten minute poem. All about noodles.
Poetry talent, me I've oodles and oodles.
Well, not really. Actually I suck.
For me, it's all a matter of luck.

Much Love & Good Luck...

[Trans] [Not completely suffering] Reclusive YJ

Recently someone from this website posted Mr Cai Kangyong’s famous diary . I try to reflect the article onto myself after reading it again. In the article it states: if you idolize a star, you must put it in writing – this I manage to do. It also states: if you idolize a star, you must let your mum know – this I manage to do (I did not just tell my mum, I even told my husband in a heat of the moment when I was not completely rational. Let’s put the seriously damaged consequences aside temporarily). It then states: if you idolize a star, you should go to see him in person – this I can’t manage to do, no matter how much I scratch my head to pieces, because my idol BYJ is in reclusion once more.

There has not been any news about YJ for a long while. Occasionally we get to hear that he has been to the library, the art museum, the dye factory and the salt mine to gather information and take photos. Often a few isolated words and phrases, at the most one or two blurred photos, in an attempt to provide a remedy for his fans’ lonely hearts.

It appears that reclusion is a convention for YJ. Like in the past, each time he finishes a project, he goes into hiding for a year or so. Wasn’t there a story about how after the peak of his drama “First Love” he was in reclusion for ten months? By the time he returned to the TV station, even the concierge at the entrance could not recognize him. This time around it has been over a year and a half, if we also count his recuperation from the injuries after TWSGG.

Although during this period, he made several magnificent appearances. In Japan twice, the MBC’s award ceremony twice, the ambassador of travel, the medal award presentation and the white tiger of TWSSG’s wedding. These appearances are far too little for his deserving fans that have been missing him deeply. Every time when the news about another wedding, we are like the nagging Ajima hoping he may turn up. But the end result is too often a no show amidst the crowd. No matter how disappointed his fans are. He stays far away like before, away from the aloofly noisy pla-ces and people. A recluse in his own world, leaving behind the soft clouds and light winds.

Honestly speaking, from this point of view, being a BYJ fan is really hard work. Recently I pop my head over to another popular star’s site (don’t kill me). This star is constantly appearing in public. He is promoting his new album straight after the TV drama. His next project of another TV drama and a movie are waiting for him in the pipeline. His news is reported one after another. His website is boiling, postings such as,”I am going to see him”, “I have seen him”, “I just returned and haven’t got over from feeling dizzy after seeing him” are all over the pla-ce. Various activities, video, artwork are everywhere, until our eyes can’t take it anymore. His fans are over indulging in happiness. I was following the lead, but at the same time, when I think about YJ, my heart feels somewhat quite lonesome.

Occasionally I even feel a bit resentful: YJ a, YJ, loving you is not an easy task.

Back to being a bit resentful, but truly in my mind it was clear that YJ’s excellence and how he stands out from the crowd, are his most precious qualities.

In this world, there is fewer and fewer who would handle matters in the same manner as BYJ in the entertainment industry. We could say it is fairly unique. New stars, more intense competitions. It is hard to stay at the top. Maintaining public appearance and popularity is most important. Fame and fortune come hand in hand. Just a simple truth. But this truth would not hold up when it comes to BYJ.

Fame and fortune is not BYJ’s aim, although he has been successful when compared with others. Improving himself continuously, enriching himself continuously and pursing self perfection continuously, are the utmost boundary for BYJ.

Since his debut, he has been behaving this way. Although this kind of individualism does not go down well with the trends and could trouble him frequently. A junior dares not participate in variety shows, dares not to accept interviews, ignoring piles of script offers. Doesn’t buy into others. In turn, he recedes and went off on a self education journey. He paid no attention to the TV station’s freeze and the media’s criticism. He continued enriching himself quietly, polishing himself, preparing himself for “the act with restraint on the bases of extensive knowledge”. Until one day, when he returned with a graceful smile and confident steps, as powerful as a thunderbolt. Hence forth standing at the summit, pointing and smiling at the world.

But his reclusion has not changed, live simply by wisely, live tranquilly by remotely. YJ knows the essence of it deeply.

Actually, without his continuous pursuit of self perfection and self improvement, we would not have such an enriched and unusually refined BYJ. It was said that there are lights of wisdom in his eyes, where do they come from? It was also said that there is this noble aura in his movements, how did he possess them?

Answer :
always have a book in his hand
Erudited and received in deep knowledge
Indifferent to fame and fortune
Without desire is firm and uncompromising

He is a contemporary reclusive star. He is someone that I admire, love and praise sincerely from my heart

YJ a

You, like the mountains are high and the rivers are far, I will look from here, far across the distance.
You, like the tree of love stay evergreen, I will accompany you forever, stay true.

YJ a

Continuing your joyful reclusion. I can manage… sob sob.

你山高水遠,我會在這裡遙遙相望;

[Article 2005] Bae Gives ‘April Snow’ His Best

Bae Yong-joon, who turns 33 today, says he wants to start a family as soon as possible as he feels lonely in his “simple life.”

Clad in a gray suit and white shirt, the South Korean known as “Yonsama” looked serene, spoke politely and smiled, although his two years as an Asian icon may have changed him a lot. South Korean actor Bae Yong-joon, however, appeared to be haunted by the experience of playing his character in director Hur Jin-ho’s moody melodrama “April Snow,” which will open nationwide Sept. 8.
“I was like a child abandoned before a camera,” Bae, who turns 33 today, recalled in a recent interview at a Seoul hotel with Yonhap News Agency.

He said it was initially very hard for him to adapt to Hur’s directing style that required a lot of impromptu acting.
“Hur always said ‘Just do it on your own way.’ Whenever I asked him ‘how,’ he would let the shooting continue after simply answering ‘Well, act and speak as you want.’ I usually calculate and decide what to do and how to do it before acting, as you know, but I couldn’t with this work.”

Bae said he used to not be able to understand when veteran actors say “Now I’ll have to let this character go his way,” but now fully comprehends.
“I could not concentrate on other work while shooting this film. I was very gloomy and did not know why I was so pained and irritated. I figured out later it was because I could not fully return to myself after becoming immersed in the character.”
“April Snow” is the story of a man and a woman drawn together after a traffic accident reveals their spouses were having an affair.

“April Snow”

Bae’s character, devoted husband In-su, and the young housewife Seo-yeong, played by Son Ye-jin, are filled with confusion and anger at the accident and betrayal by their spouses. But they gradually fall in love while trying to share their pain.
“In-su is a responsible, very good-natured and healthy person. He loved his wife a lot. If I were In-su, I could not leave my wife in the hospital bed (for the newly-found love) either,” the actor said. He admitted that he is conservative as far as love is concerned.

Bae became enormously popular in East Asian nations, especially in Japan, after the South Korean television series in which he starred, “Winter Sonata,” was broadcast in 2003 and last year.

He was given the nickname, “Yonsama,” by his Japanese fans. “Yon” is the short form of his name in Japanese and “sama” means a highly respected person. It is unusual for Japanese to refer to foreigners using the honorific “sama.”
When he visited Taiwan last weekend to promote the film, he was greeted at the airport and hotel by throngs of fans, mostly middle-aged women from Japan and other Asian countries, which proved again he is one of Asia’s top stars.
“I think the Taiwanese people were closer and friendlier toward me this time than when I visited the country last year. I think that was because they became more familiar with South Korean pop culture.”

Bae said he feels a great burden as a star who stands in the forefront of “hallyu (Korean wave),” or the boom of Korean pop culture in neighboring Asian countries, but thanks God for endowing him with the pioneering role. “I expect hallyu will serve as a chance to create a unified Asian cultural entity.”
In addition, the actor said overseas fans’ high expectations do not influence his choice of screenplays.
“There is difference between images that I can showcase in films and real life. I will do my best to show my best side in my life,” he said.

Bae said he would seek a variety of different roles in the future, not just the kind of nice and warmhearted characters he portrayed in previous works.
The actor has already chosen his next role. He will play the King Kwanggaeto of the ancient Korean kingdom of Koguryo in a local television drama tentatively named “Taewangsasingi.” The drama is scheduled to air in September next year.

“Taewangsasingi”

Koguryo ruled the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and the northeastern part of modern-day China some two millennia ago.
The actor confirmed he does not have any plan yet to advance into the overseas film world but is willing to cooperate with Asian filmmakers for co-productions with South Korea.
“Asian film industries have so far had insufficient capital and marketability to pursue a common project, but many conditions have improved (in recent years.) I’m being ready to cooperate for Asian co-productions as part of my long-term plan.”

Bae said he wants to start a family with a baby as soon as possible and live a happy life as ordinary people do.
“I feel really lonely these days when I’m in my apartment by myself. These feelings get deeper as time goes on. But my chances of meeting people are limited since I live a very simple life _ fitness club, home and office. Moreover, I’m not the kind of person who easily makes friends at parties.”
Reading messages posted by fans on his official Web site is one of his sources of joy these days, Bae said.
“They really cheer me up. They are like vitamin pills that invigorate me,” he added.

Jumong The first King of Goguryeo

King Dongmyeong of Goguryeo (58 - 19 BC, r. 37 – 19 BC), "Dongmyeongseongwang" (東明聖王) also known by his birth name Jumong, was the founding monarch of Goguryeo, the northernmost of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. In the Gwanggaeto Stele, he is called Chumo-wang (King Chumo). In the Samguk Sagi and the Samguk Yusa, he is recorded as Jumong, with the surname Go. The Samguk Sagi states that he was also known as Chumo or Sanghae (상해, 象解). The name is also transcribed in other records as Chumong (추몽, 鄒蒙), Jungmo (중모, 中牟 or 仲牟), or Domo (도모, 都牟).

Jumong's kingdom of Goguryeo eventually grew into a great regional power. Goguryeo stood for 705 years and was ruled by a total of 28 kings in the Go Royal Family until it was conquered by the Silla-Tang alliance. King Mu of Baekje

King Mu of Baekje (600 - 641, ? - 641) was the 30th king of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. He was the son of King Beop.

The Samguk Yusa relates a legend regarding Mu's marriage to a princess of Silla, although historians consider it unlikely to be true, given the hostilities between the rival kingdoms. In this story, the young Seodong (Mu's childhood name) falls in love with Silla princess Seonhwa, and intentionally spreads a song about the princess and himself among the people[5]. Thanks to this song ("Seodong-yo," or "Seodong's Song") king Jinpyeong of Silla banishes the princess, and Mu marries her and becomes the king of Baekje.

Mu is one of the main characters of the South Korean television drama Seo Dong Yo (서동요). In the drama, Mu appears as the hidden fourth son of King Wideok of Baekje. After his mother's death, Mu meets his future wife, Princess Seonhwa of Silla, and falls in love with her.

Gwanggaeto the Great King of Korea

Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo (374-413, r. 391-413) was the nineteenth monarch of Goguryeo, the northernmost of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. His full posthumous name roughly means "Very Greatest King, Broad Expander of Territory, buried in Gukgangsang.", sometimes abbreviated to Hotaewang or Taewang. He selected Yeongnak as his era name, and was called King Yeongnak the Great during his reign.

Under Gwanggaeto, Goguryeo once again became a major power of East Asia, having enjoyed such a status in the 2nd century CE. Upon King Gwanggaeto's death at thirty-nine years of age in 413, Goguryeo controlled all territory between the Amur and Han Rivers (two thirds of modern Korea, Manchuria, and parts of the Russian Maritime province and Inner Mongolia).
In addition, in 399, Silla submitted to Goguryeo for protection from raids from Baekjae. Gwanggaeto captured the Baekje capital in present-day Seoul and made Baekje its vassal. Many consider this loose unification under Goguryeo to have been the only true unification of the Three Kingdoms.

Gwanggaeto's accomplishments are recorded on the Gwanggaeto Stele, erected in 414 at the site of his tomb in Ji'an along the present-day Chinese-North Korean border. It is the largest engraved stele in the world.
