On September 15, YG Entertainment’s founder and producer had a phone interview with Edaily. Psy has recently conquered what was an unthinkable feat: placing 1st on the US iTunes chart.
Yang Hyun Suk: “No way, no way I thought. Now he’s scary (for what he achieved). I can’t close my mouth in amazement of his feat not as a chief executive officer, but as a frequent user of iTunes.” He directed all the praise to Psy. “Psy succeeded not because of YG Entertainment. I didn’t think a Korean artist could achieve something like this in my wildest dreams.
Everyone should honestly congratulate him on this achievement.” Psy’s “Gangnam Style” first entered the chart at 58th place on August 27 and it took 19 days for him to place first. And even with this achievement, it doesn’t seem Psy-fever will slow down anytime soon.
He’s also placed 1st in the overall world chart in iTunes beating famous musicians like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and Maroon 5. What makes this feat more special is the fact that the song is in Korean. Yang Hyun Suk added, “Just having a Korean song in the top 100 is amazing. But it became 1st. This will be a pretty tough record to break.”
Having about 80% of the American music market, iTunes is one of the best ways to see the trends of music around the world. Psy was able to succeed and appear on Billboard’s main chart without officially promoting with an English song.
On September 14, he placed 64th on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Wonder Girls became the first Korean artists to enter the chart placing 76th. Psy is planning to perform at “iHeartRadio Music” Festival located in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 21-22.
He will make another guest appearance on NBC’s “Ellen Degeneres Show.” Psy will return to Korea on September 25 to stay for about 2 weeks before going back to the states.
Yang Hyun Suk added, “There’s a new project planned, but it’s not the right time to reveal. Psy will spend the majority of this coming year in the U.S.” Soompiers, why does Psy need to stay in the states for a year? What do you think they’re planning?
